I'm still holding on to indulging with HD DVDs. What if some of my favorite films will not be released in this format...

Redge, the Pioneer player you saw could be a high-end DVD player with HDMI, upscale features, etc.

Pioneer Corp is one of the Board of Directors of Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The first BD player is expected to be launched in June (USA) by Samsung while SONY will follow somewhere in August. :)

Yes, high-resolution video scaling processor is indeed very expensive, such as the popular DVDO iScan brand which range from $1,200 to $2,000!  :o It upconverts SD video content to resolution as high as 1080p. Further info: http://www.dvdo.com/pro/pro_ishd.php

Many believe with today's flat panel HDTV technology, its built-in scaler is sufficient to do the job without using an external converter. Fixed pixel display will normally convert the video source to match its native resolution. Similarly, Furthermore, HD DVD player has the capability to upconvert standard DVD to 720p or 1080i through HDMI interface (except Blu-ray which is up to 1080p).

Yes mongaddi, in short the essense of a HD player is a HDTV. The purpose of HD player is to output its HD video source in HD resolution of 720p or higher to a HDTV. :) Without a HDTV, you will be seeing quality similar to existing DVD on a regular TV.

First hybrid DVD/HD-DVD on May 9, 2006: Rumor Has It

No, it's not a rumor.  It's the 2005 movie with Jennifer Aniston.

Finally, HD has arrived.  This was and has always been  the holy grail OBJECTIVE of home video.  DVD was just an interim.

I don't know if this is history in the making, but you can take note of the very first pioneering titles in HD-DVD.
I can't remember what the first title was in DVD.  Anyone?

Well maybe not entirely.  The HD player will just downconvert the HD data to what your TV can accomodate.  So if you're using progressive scan via componnent connection on a standard TV, the HD player will output 480p resolution (but you have to adjust your player settings, I suppose).  It's downward compatible.  Some pundits opine that a downconverted HD material might even look much better than your standard DVD material.

it was discussed in another topic.  Warner dvd's I think like twister, blade runner and other titles.  All of them have poor PQ & SQ.  Low bit rate.

Wow, that's very BLUE.   ;D Masyado namang literal ang SONY for Blu-Ray.  It would look out of place in an all-silver or all-black set-up.   ;D

Right, it was Warner, but was there a DVD title considered a landmark first?   Or just a set of titles like you mentioned?
