FAREWELL TO THE VALLEY OF THE SUNS

Finally, a new Western Conference Champions had been crowned -- the DALLAS MAVERICKS. I was really hoping for a miracle to happen...I was hoping for a Phoenix comeback...alas, that didn't happen. CONGRATULATIONS to Avery Johnson and the Mavericks.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING?

Didn't Commissioner Stern recently announced that he was proposing a new playoff format? A decision resulted from Mark Cuban's playoff tantrums on the current playoff format?  Behold, the Mavericks are in the NBA Finals...ah, the irony of it all.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Since, neither the SAN ANTONIO SPURS nor the PHOENIX SUNS are in the 2006 NBA Finals...I won't be watching this year's Finals series between the Mavericks and the Heat. Just like I said before...my pick to win the Championship Trophy are the Mavericks. Nevertheless, may the best team win. See you next season...Spurs, Suns and the NBA as a whole.

exactly....other side tells me to root for Dallas (for beating Phoenix, and for Dirk whose having a great postseason, and a certified nice guy....avery johnson too.  On the other hand, I would like Miami to win too...for Payton and Mourning who hadn't won yet.  This might be their last chance to win it all.  Unlike Dallas who are still young and can go back if the hunger is still there.  Give us a great series na lang....Tipong cliffhangers, game winning shots, unbelievable comebacks and the like.  Would love a game 7 for dessert too.... ;D ;D

I agree.  This series will be tough to call.  IMHO, at full strength and based on the regular rotation of players during this year's playoffs, Dallas and Miami are equally hungry and seem to match up well against each other:

Centers:  O'Neal/Mourning <-> Diop/Dampier (Advantage - MIA!)
Forwards:  Walker/Haslem/Posey <-> Nowitzki/Howard/Van Horn (Advantage - DAL)
Guards:  Wade/Williams/Payton <-> Terry/Harris/Stackhouse (Advantage - None?)

Miami also has playoff veterans on its regular rotation, which Dallas can counteract with its youth and running game.  Hopefully, no one gets injured or suspended during the course of the finals, or else the series will definitely turn ugly.

I also think coaching will be key.  As for homecourt advantage, well, both teams (esp. Dallas) showed that they can win on the road in the playoffs (although with the 2-3-2 format, it'll be a huge momentum shift if Miami pulls off a win in the first two games).

Bottom line: I think the ultimate barometer player in this series is SHAQ.  If he plays like he did in Game 6 of the ECF, it'll be a huge plus for Miami.  But if Dallas can contain him, Mark Cuban should be one happy fellow in two-three weeks' time.  :)

I agree 100% with the match-up prognosis, wiggum.  Its all even now.  Even in coaching I believe its pretty even.  Riley won 4 NBA titles with Lakers in the 80s and is one of the winningest mentors in postseason play.  But  Avery has the best 82 game record of all time (and I think a very high winning percentage overall, though still early in coacching career) and is this year's Coach of the Year.  His strategy in the 2nd half of the game 6 clincher against the Suns was highly praised around the NBA press beat.  Intangibles na lang siguro yan.  :)

There's an even chance for both teams.  I guess the Dallas Mavericks will pull it through.  Hope for an exciting series ;)

Dallas beat the Spurs even with Duncan averaging 30+ points and playing the best series in his career. So I guess they can handle Shaq's monster performances. IMHO, the barometer player here is Dirk Nowitzki in his 1st ever NBA Finals. If he continues to play big and lead his team, then Dallas will take home the trophy.

These playoffs have been quite unpredictable.

At the start of the season, most experts picked Spurs vs Pistons, with Detroit winning it all. Lakers were leading 3-1 and still lost. Cavs were not given much of a chance to win even one game, and they stretched the Pistons to 7. Suns were the hot pick going into the WCF, and Dallas moved on. Etc etc etc...

I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the Finals.

Both of my chosen teams... advanced!

Now come the hard part, choosing the champion...

Heat in 6!

Everyone is wondering who can guard Shaq... the real question is: who can stop Wade?

For Dallas to win... they should make it hard for Wade to penetrate at will.

I want Miami to win if Mourning and Payton will play their best games. Sure I want them to get their championship ring but I want them to earn them.

Otherwise, I'm all for Dallas!

i think the coaches will be the critical factor in this series.

mavs beat the spurs because they had johnson at the helm.
the series ended ng 7th game at nag-overtime pa.
(where the spurs overcame a 20 point deficit nung 3rd quarter)

many believed it is one of the best series in nba history
where 6 out of the 7 games were decided in the last seconds.

yes, duncan was having his best games in this season BUT
because of the defensive adjustments made by johnson,
duncan was limited in the most crucial moments.

johnson put some defensive emphasis to a team known for its offense
thru harris, howard & diop.

the mavs offense? as long as nowitzki & terry is on fire,
the only thing they need to do is to defend properly.

however, this is johnson's first time in a finals as a head coach.

with regards to riley, he has 5 rings with the lakers.
riley has to make plays that will inhibit the defensive prowess of the mavs
by making the heat a run and gun team.
this will fully utilize the talents of williams & walker
and make it much more fun to watch wade :)

heat's defense? stop nowitzki and terry.
payton can handle terry.
but stopping a 7-foot perimeter shooter (and slasher)
is one hell of a headache for any coach.
just ask popovich and d'antoni.

sir, Riley has only 4 rings with the Lakers.  The  champion Laker team of  1980 was coached by Paul Westhead, who was eventually fired early on his third season with the team.  Riley succeeded Westhead.  It was widely believed Magic orchestrated his ouster.

I agree with you though that early in his coaching career, Avery Johnson is having success coz he is brilliant in making adjustments, very bold in forming defensive match-ups.  Look what he has done with Dallas.  They lost Nash and Finley, but they didn't regressed.  Instead, Dallas has the big "D" now...and Dirk is having his finest season.  :)

I hate to sound like the geek that I am, but Riles does have FIVE rings -- one as a player on the 1972 championship team.

Avery has bling too, siyempre.

Who's going to add to his collection this year? Hindi rin ako pupusta!

the unpredictable nature of this year's playoffs continues... lots of people said this would be an exciting finals, for a change. and then we get a sloppy game 1.

dallas was outrebounded for the first time in the playoffs, and still won. heat only got 2 points from their bench. fans can only hope this gets better (this is not a prediction!).
