Strangely enough, I kind of agree, It's not jaw-drops-on-the-floor outrageous like Abot Kamay ang Pangarap (which I love, but not in a way I think the director would appreciate
), and it's not tepidly tasteful like his debut film. It's actually well-made, well crafted Henry James. Parang bagay siya at showing this kind of stunted upper-class family relations. And Maricel does give a terrific performance and (surprise surprise) even Richard Gomez is excellent as a golddigging social climber (duh!).
Mind you, I've seen Wyler's version and that is terrific. But like Wyler's version of The Collector, he does things well, but doesn't really make the material personal--or as personal as Mike de Leon does his version (Bilanggo sa Dililm), or Carlitos does with this version.
