It's virtually identical to the UK R2 release version, which I have. The only addition would be the Joss Whedon interviews for six of the episodes, but I have those too, from the US "Best of Season One" VHS release.

One comment, though, about the review:

Quote
First off, the video quality is abysmal. The picture is grainy and soft with a VHS quality transfer. I seriously doubt Fox went out of their way packaging this set. Even the sound isn't all that great. While most TV sets are coming out with new transfers, they're also coming to us with remastered audio that really sound great. There's really no excuse for it.

There isn't much that could have been done about the video quality for the first two seasons. Joss Whedon and company have talked about that. It's due to the fact that they were forced to shoot on 16mm due to budgetary constraints. They were able to upgrade only when the show became a modest hit, so the third season has noticeably better picture quality. Yes, the difference really shows on the UK third season release.

Actually, for Region 2, they've already released Season Six, as well. Mine was shipped last week... it should arrive any day now, and I'll post the features here when it does.

The features are mostly the same. The special features aren't identical, but that doesn't mean there's more on either version.

For example, based on the features listed here for the R1 Season Four, most are the same, but the difference is:

The R2 has the featurette, "Buffy: Inside the Music" (13:33) and the script for "Restless", while the R1 has an audio commentary for "Wild At Heart" and the featurette: "Oz Revelations: A Full Moon". The other listed features are the same.

=====

My Review of the Special Features:

Karaoke Sing Alongs:

I was looking forward to this for its kitsch value, but was ultimately disappointed. This is because from my point of view, the two most "singable" songs (or as Anya would put it, those with potential to be "breakaway pop hits") are Tara's "Under Your Spell" and Spike's "Rest In Peace". We get neither of these. Instead, we get "I've Got A Theory/Bunnies/We're Together", "I'll Never Tell" and "Walk Through The Fire".

Yes, Anya's dreaded "retro pastiches".  ;D

David Fury's Behind The Scenes Of "Once More With Feeling":

This is actually very interesting, it's like David Fury with a handicam documenting the famous musical episode. They show scenes from the handicam intercut with final footage, and even go back to recording sessions, etc. This is much longer than the version that was previously downloadable from the net. Interesting things revealed include that Buffy sometimes uses completely CGI stakes when dusting vampires, so she's really not holding anything; also, SMG's knife throwing during Giles' song was also fully CGI.

Disc Two Easter Egg:

From the Language Menu of "Once More With Feeling", hit up on your remote, highlighting a hidden "B". When you click enter, you'll see a brief autograph signing session for the "Once More With Feeling" CD featuring Joss Whedon, Amber Benson, and Michelle Trachtenberg. Oh, and 500 fans crazy enough to stand in line.

Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Panel Discussion:

Very nice! This hour-long feature was filmed right after season six as the cast has no idea what's in store for them in season seven. It features Joss Whedon, Marti Noxon, DP Raymond Stella, Production Designer Carey Meyer, and cast members Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Marsters. Notice who's missing?  ;D

My favorite was when Joss was asked, "A lot of people hated Season Six for being too dark. How do you explain that turn the show took?"

Joss: "Umm... (pause)... Oops?"  ::)

Behind The Scenes Featurette for "Buffy Goes To Work":

If you're a Buffy fan, you must be thinking: "They made a special feature for 'Doublemeat Palace,' one of the worst episodes of all time???"

Relax. It's a feature where they interview cast and crew about their first jobs, and what their dream jobs would be. Short and sweet. Oh, "Warren" said he wants to be a "fluffer". LOL!

Featurette: Season Six Overview: "Life Is The Big Bad"

Different from those from the previous seasons. They used to go episode by episode, giving tidbits about each. This time around, they go by character. Not as informative  and insight-filled as it used to be.

Featurette: "Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Television With A Bite": A well-produced 45 minute TV special. I'm not sure if this is the same as the show that aired on Biography, but it covers the entire Buffy phenomenon from Joss' initial concept ("Rhonda, The Immortal Waitress" - no kidding!), to the movie flop, resurrection of the concept for television, casting controversies, and major plot highlights from Season One to Early Season Seven. Very well produced, and in the 6 DVD seasons so far, the first and only time SMG has actually participated in any special feature.

Outtakes Reel - Much like that in the Season Five boxed set, fun but a bit too short. And SMG still apparently commits no bloopers.

Hmm... I wonder if that's contractual for her?  ::)

=====

Small complaint: I just started watching this, and noticed that there was a short edit in the "Willow killed Bambi" scene. They cut out a few frames, like when the fawn's legs were struggling. It was fairly obvious from the music jump, and I confirmed it with my tape of the original UPN broadcast. I'm not sure if that will also be the case when the R1 is released.

Too bad about the karaoke feature... I was hoping to see that Under Your Spell was included.  I'm surpirsed to see that Something to Sing About isn't included as well? Well, amidst the disappointment, it still makes a great DVD collection... I'm just hoping that in the R1 version it may be different.  I've also seen in CD-WOW that there is a single disc release for R2 on the Once More With Feeling episode although it didn't state any karaoke feature... check it out:   http://www3.cd-wow.net/detail_results_2.php?product_code=4973

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Limited Edition Complete Series Box Set!
Posted by Gord Lacey
 8/03/2005

Whoa, these past few weeks have brought some news about big box sets, but this one takes the cake. Fox has announced plans to release the complete run of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a 40 disc limited-edition box set releasing on November 15 (the same day as the complete Friends set).

You'll get the previously released 7 seasons of Buffy (39 discs), plus a special bonus disc containing a brand new documentary featuring Joss Whedon. Each box will be individually numbered, and will contain a signed letter from Joss Whedon, and a comprehensive book filled with episode listings and memorable Buffy quotes. This will set you back a suggested price of $199.98 ($349.98 CAN).

Annoyed by this new set because you already have the seven seasons? Here's a quick suggestion; dump your current sets on eBay right now. Amazon.com is selling all 7 seasons in a package for a suggested price of $399.86, and their price of $231.01 (big savings). When this set hits stores it'll likely go for $140, so if you could get $120-$150 for the sets on eBay then you'll be laughing when you pick up this special boxed set. If you've never sold on eBay then go into a local DVD store that deals in used DVDs and see how much they'll give you for all 7 seasons.
