^^it's Fame Academy under a different name, licensed from Endemol. This new show probably needs its own thread.

blech, i'll skip this as well, I don't even like American Idol, and this is worse...  :P

Taste is truly subjective. I enjoy American Idol, and this is MUCH better. I've watched UK, Spanish and Portuguese versions.

Looks like ABS-CBN needed something to go up against Philippine Idol, much like Fame Academy went up against Pop Idol in the UK.

But it's really a question of casting. I wasn't that fond of Fame Academy 2, after all.

Anyone know the launch date?

On a related note, American TV network ABC also licensed this show from Endemol this year, and the American version, The One: Making a Music Star, premieres this July in the States.

meaning abs is ditching SCQ teen?

if the networks would wage the ratings war using franchises,
ang ultimate winners ay ang mga may-ari ng franchises.
sila ang higit na kikita sa ganito.

LOL, I hate singing/dancing/acting talent quest-type of shows--so I avoid watching American Idol and its numerous clones. To me, it's just like watching a glorified karaoke bar contest. But that's just me.

Launch date for Pinoy Dream Academy is sometime in August 2006.

actually we had a whole discussion about this in another thread... apparently operacion triunfo or star academy are the original and the rest are franchises. ;)

gee! i wonder who they'll get for the faculty (god! i hope we have diction teacher as well. LOL.) and who will be the headmaster (hmmm... bagay si KUH dito!  :P :P)  ... plus who will be visiting them for the "master classes"? (sana international artists din) and most interesting of all ...  how will our "academia" look compared to the ones from other countries? (sana naman di tayo mag-mukhang basura. LOL.)  ;D in the spanish one, a season lasts 5-6 months. atin kaya?

from what i know these are the countries that have this franchise: spain (operacion triunfo), portugal (operacao triunfio), mexico (operacion triunfo), argentina (operacion triunfo), brazil (fama), chile (operacion triunfo), u.k. (fame academy), italy (operazione trionfo), france (star academy), arab states (star academy), greece (fame story), russia (factory of the stars) and indonesia (akademi fantasi) ... and now u.s. (the one) and us (dream academy). baka naman may iba pa kayong alam. heh heh.  :P most of these only lasted a season or two tho... and some have produced some really interesting winners. (the brazil one is awesome! ... and probably the most prolific is david bisbal.)

i, too, prefer this over AI... when TVE asia aired OT 1-3... i was basically up at strange hours in the morning to catch the dailies and watch the weekly galas. LOL...  ::)

BTW hankey, when OT españa moved from TVE to telecinco... nina didn't return as headmistress... and only about half the faculty moved with the show. sayang! i liked nina.  :-\ ... and even BIGGER sayang... wala tayong telecinco! aaaaargh!  :-\

for me naman, it's much more interesting because the dailies are supposed to show the kids as they prepare for the weekly galas... no cheeky "tasks" and no weird alliances... as someone who is always interested in the creative process, this is an interesting look into it. from song selection, to arrangement, to vocal coaching and even choreogaphy. it's quite riveting and a LOT will depend on the casting.

of course it doesn't hurt when there's some added drama in the academy.  ::)

Oh wow, the American version MADE HISTORY as "the lowest rated adults 18-49 reality show debut in the history of modern television."  :o

From Daily Variety:

Grim Reality for 'One'

"The One" is done.

ABC has pulled the plug on the singing competish, barely one week after it bowed to disastrous Nielsen numbers. Skein's July 18 premiere goes down as the lowest-rated adults 18-49 debut for a reality show (a 1.1 demo rating/3 share) in modern TV history.

The Alphabet nonetheless aired three more episodes of "The One: Making a Superstar" (plus a repeat of the two-hour premiere) in the hope that ratings might improve. Instead, they declined even further -- and Thursday morning, ABC execs decided they'd had enough.

Cancellation, while expected after last week's numbers, leaves ABC with a big scheduling hole to fill between now and mid-September, when "The One" was slated to wrap. There's no word yet on what ABC will air in its place.

Net will have to settle up with producer Endemol USA, which was contracted to produce more than a dozen additional episodes of the show at a pricetag likely in excess of $1 million per seg.

Negotiations shouldn't be bitter, however, since ABC and Endemol are already in business on another project, quizzer "For the Rest of Your Life." Studio also produces the Alphabet hit "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

In theory, Endemol could also allow ABC to roll over some of its commitment to "The One" to future Endemol projects. Execs from ABC and Endemol declined interview requests.

"The One," a sort of "American Idol" meets "Big Brother" mashup based on the Spanish format "Operacion Triunfo," was designed to crown a pop singing star. Nine contestants remained when ABC canceled the show, and a rep for the net said there are no current plans for the competish to continue on ABC Family or ABC.com.

That said, because ABC and Endemol were running a contest --with a prize of a recording contract -- it seems likely that someone will evenutally be declared "the One." Just how a winner will be declared is still being discussed.

Other reality shows have been pulled before a winner could be announced. Fox killed Endemol's "The Next Great Champ" prematurely -- but allowed the competition to finish out on Fox Sports Net.

And last summer, ABC canceled "Welcome to the Neighborhood" before it even premiered. Winner of that competish got to keep the prize, a new house.

So why didn't "The One" work?

Bad timing is one prevalent theory. Because the show wasn't greenlit until last winter, ABC wasn't able to get the show on the air before its mid-July premiere date. By that time, a slew of talent competitions had already premiered, perhaps testing viewers' interest in the genre.

There's also a theory that viewers felt the show seemed too similar to "American Idol," though the show skipped what's long been considered one of the key ingredients in the latter skein's success: the monthlong audition process.

Indeed, while their were auditions held for "The One," they weren't the sort of cattle calls that "Idol" revels in. Instead, producers tried to seek out the best talent possible by looking for singers who already had some experience.

One network insider believes shows such as "The One" can't work because viewers simply love "Idol" too much.

"All these shows are copies of what people think of as their favorite show in the world," he said. "And when you copy that, you just get anger."

I wonder what happened to the contestants? They were just suddenly all evicted and sent home? If they're still at the Academy until ABC/Endemol "figures out how to determine the winner," then who's paying for their stay at this point?  ;D

Sad for the franchise, since I'm a fan.  :-[

I hope the Philippine version won't suffer the same fate, since Philippine Idol and all its copycat shows are already out there, after all.

ang pangit naman kasi... i saw clips from youtube and it was obviously a horrible low-budget attempt at the franchise. the host sucked... and often kinakain niya salita niya!

add to the fact that most of the contestants seemed "country" oriented... at least, that's the vibe i got from the clips. ugh! at least yung "america's got talent" medyo obvious na pinag-gastusan:-\

They should've gotten that girl from Operacao Triunfo who sang "I'm Like A Bird" as a special guest performer, complete with her bird-themed backup dancers...  ;D

And Catarina Furtado to host, of course. O0

==========

But speaking of "low budget attempt" - isn't using the PBB House as the academy even worse?

Hmm... the show premiered last night, and not a single comment.

I didn't even know it was starting already. I only caught the last few minutes when I got home.

I reiterate my sentiments in the Philippine Idol thread - our well of talent for potential superstars is drying up because of all the copycat-competitor shows. From the NCR semifinalists, I don't think I saw a single one who had both looks and talent.

The best thing about the show is that... its logo and color scheme was copied from PinoyDVD! ;D

I think I'll pass on this one.

like i haven't heard that before... LOL.

it's funny that they even copied the stage of operacion triunfo (long runway and all.) ... i suppose they will be copying the style of OT as well... where if you are "safe" that week... you'll cross the ramp. or something like that.  ;)

the funny part is that they will have TWO hosts for the gala nights... can't sam milby handle himself on cam alone by now? his tagalog has improved immensely. LOL.

was it just me or did nikki gil looked freskishly overcooked in that show? heh heh.  :P

Well talk about hosts, Toni Gonzaga really sucks. She talks like everyone around her (including the televiewers) is hearing impaired. Why can't she just tone down her overly excited but irritating voice? And her get-up. She's totally clueless!

The first and the last few groups of performances were good.  The middle ones sucked.

But PDA made a really interesting casting... having Rosita and Jun into the mix... Panky is a standout, big girl with a big voice, etc...

Either ABS-CBN has much better acoustics/sound equipment, or their set of students on the whole is much more vocally talented than most of the Philippine Idol top 12.

I have no idea why they're giving a quitter with no valid reason such a HUGE send off. He stole the slot from thousands of other people who would have killed for the chance to be in the academy. The selfish little brat should be shipped back to Japan and have his visa to enter our country revoked.

You don't reward quitters in my book.

I don't know. Lately I've been hearing lots of off-notes from many PDA scholars, particularly Kristoff, who by some miracle, always survives every elimination show. Good thing there's an automatic expulsion after a contestant gets five probationary grades (he currently has four -- YEYEH!). Anywyay, personally, I think the Philippine Idol contestants sing much better than their PDA counterparts.

And I agree with you on Jun, the Japanese dude. Sasali-sali siya, ayaw naman nya pala talaga.

taka ko lang... if it was known from the start that kristoff was leaving (and i assume this because nikki gil kept saying that there awas a major announcement later in the show.) ... why did the text voting continue?? wasn't it pointless?

they have strayed from the usual "OT" and "SA" formula na kasi when it comes to the rules. there's no "midterm evaluation" business in the other franchises ... also, elimination happens before nominations... ganun din ba dito? (sorry... been switching channels to catch philippine idol kasi. LOL.)

No, it wasn't known from the start that Kristoff was leaving. They came up with a new rule: once you've been nominated five times, you're automatically expelled. Kristoff had four nominations. The next nominations were based on last night's performances. Had Kristoff's performance last night been good enough that he didn't land in the bottom four, then text votes/professors/classmates still could have saved him. But it wasn't. So instead of going through the full process and evicting TWO people (Kristoff surely would've been saved by the text votes), they just evicted him, since he hit nomination #5.

Basically, in the local franchise, the nominees/Grade A student have solo numbers for the "galas," while the rest have group performances. At the end of the performances, they announce which of the nominees got the most text votes and is saved, followed by the professors' choice, then the final vote by classmates. Unlike in other franchises, the evictees don't do the walk of shame singing their final song that same night - they return to the academy and leave the following day. Also, unlike the Spanish Operacion Triunfo contestants, the students aren't surprised by a new FIAT awaiting them after they're evicted. They just get a Belgian Waffle franchise.  ;D

The following night, the remaining students find out who the judges selected as the bottom 4 from the previous night's performances. So it's completely possible that the person the teachers saved or even the Grade A student will be nominated, if the judges didn't like their performance that previous night. The person whose performance received the highest scores from the judges will be the next week's Grade A student.

Sorry, my terminology is from Fame Academy. I don't remember what they call "Grade A" locally or in the other franchises, also due to Idol overlaps. At least beginning next week, Idol's performance night will be on Sundays already. I'll just text my PDA Professor-friend to get the PDA results so I can watch Idol without constantly switching channels.  ;D
