WORLD CUP 2006 in Germany
« on: Jun 08, 2006 at 08:28 AM »
World Cup is near.  Though  Solar Sportsplus will air some games, our cable provider here will beam games live and loop it up for 24 hours, a pay per view deal.
What are your thoughts and what country will you be rooting for?   ;D ;D  (mods, don't know kung me thead na nito..)

I don't know what the deal is going to be for Skycable. I'd love to get all of the games -- work be damned.

I'm rooting for England, especially with Wayne Rooney back in action.

It's a pity you have to pay to see this big event. I never liked futbol, but I would like to feed my noggin a thing or two about it sometimes. What better way to catch the futbol fever than by watching the best of the best compete? I guess mahal talaga bayad to get rights for this event.

Yup, it ain't popular here.  Not even in the United States.  Hoops reigns supreme here, and in the US theres NBA, MLB, and NFL.  I may not follow the sport religiously, but once in four years, I want to see the best players in the world gather, and play their hearts out for glory of their homeland.
an excerpt of an article PASSION OF THE CUP by SI's Frank Deford:

"It is part of the conceit of the Olympics that they boast that the Greeks actually called off wars when the Games were on. Not quite true. During wartime, Olympic competitors and spectators would be allowed safe passage through war zones, but not even the Olympics could shut down good old-fashioned armed combat. I would suspect, though, that if a war got in the way of the World Cup today, even the generals would demand an armistice."

click here for the full article "PASSION OF THE CUP".

I agree its a pity we have to pay that much to see a prestigious event like this.  Wala cguro sponsors kaya the fee is paased on the subscriber.  There's solar sports naman, though selected games lang.  ;D

It's too depressing to watch this bec. the Philippines has not been part of it. We're too obsessed with basketball, a sport that we hardly excel in. China is considered one of the best in basketball in Asia and the sport is not even very popular there.

Germany won vs Costa Rica 4-2, while Ecuador upsets Poland 2-0.  England debuts tonight at 9pm vs Paraguay.   Im also interested what the Americans can do in  this staging.  They reached Quarters last time in 2002.  They'll play 12am, Tuesday.  ;D

Brazil will be playing naaaaa!  Hope I see it on TV.

I'm not a a huge fan either  (I'm more of a rugby union fan, specifically the RBS and Heineken tourneys) but I do try to follow the games pag World Cup na. Sa EPL I'm an Arsenal fan, sa Spanish La Liga I like Barcelona and Real Madrid. I'm not familiar at all with the players sa Italian Serie and Bundes Liga though. Ganun lang ako kababaw, haha.

I am rooting for the Netherlands this year although most of my facorite Dutch platers are long gone from the national squad like Kluivert, Overmars, and the de Boer twins... but Manchester United mainstays van Nistelrooy and van der Sar are still there...  ;D ;D

US nilampaso ng Czech Republic the other day......You can see it that they started very nervous and uneasy coz me pressure  na from higher expectations after reaching quarters in '02.  They certainly didn't play like a 5th ranked team....its the most lopsisded match so far.   They got a reality CZECH!!.  Hope they play better against Italy....on a side note, saw RONALDO of Brazil...he looks heavy and slow....and there are some suggestions that he be bench...sayang, three goals kailangan nya to tie for most World Cup goals. ;D

Saw the game between Netherlands and Ivory Coast... The Dutch have a formidable offense but sadly theri defense sucks... I see them entering the later stages but against goal-scoring teams like Argentina, they have no chance...  :P :P

since Italia '90, i've been hooked on football. alala ko back then, the only way to see footage of matches was thru the Gillette World of Sports weekly show  :o

nothing beats watching live football. i've paid an arm and a leg to get live feeds of Germany 2006, and this early on, sulit na ang bayad!

Saw the game between Italy and USA last Sunday dawn, and all I can say is that its ferocious.  Three red cards were issued (including an Italian elbow to USA's John McBride which left him bloodied), and US played with nine against ten almost all of the 2nd half.  The result?  a draw.  Football insiders (and all of Europe, hehe) have been bashing the Americans saying they're not worth the no. 5 FIFA ranking.  That might be true, but I applauded the gritty stand the Yanks made.....defending corner kicks in the 87th, 88th, 89th, 90th minute of the match.   Landon Donovan was given IV fluids just to recover after the game.

This is the World Cup folks!   ;D ;D

By the way, all of Group E have a chance to advance depending on the outcome of their last games in the round.  Let's see this Friday morning. ;D ;D
