i guess no more Golden Ball award to Zidane ...

either Buffon or Cannavaro should be deserving.

It's actually a pity how some of the crowd were booing and hissing at the referees of what was a well-officiated match. They should've replayed the headbutt on the stadium's projection screen.

You know how rabid footie fans can get. I think the French football fans would have still reacted the same way even if the reason Zizou was kicked out of the game was for attempting to knife Matterazzi. Such is the blind and rabid loyalty of football fans -- that's why I love this sport!! ;D

On  a more serious note though, I really thought France had this in the bag and that it would've been a great send off for Zizou.

In contrast, the English weren't too keen to offer any affection to David Beckham after he, equally in bad taste, kicked Diego Simeone from behind (and below) during the 2nd round of France '98 - for which he was vilified as the man who ended England's run that year (They too, lost on penalties).

In fact, they would probably still be hanging effigies of Beckham until now, had he not curled in that oh so wondrous free kick in their 2002 qualifier against Greece in the dying minutes, to book England tickets to Japan/Korea 2002.

i guess the english are less forgiving than the french.

but then again, beckham is beckham, and zidane is simply, zidane.

ZZ still won the tournaments best player award, the golden ball.

from espn

The Paris-based anti-racism advocacy group SOS-Racism issued a statement Monday quoting "several very well informed sources from the world of football" as saying Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist." It demanded that FIFA, soccer's world governing body, investigate and take any appropriate action.

.....meron pa investigation to... ;D  I really believe he was provoked...but still, he shouldnt have done that....but if I was in his place too, ill never know... ::)

According to the French players Matterazzi said either of two things to him: that he was a dirty terrorist, and the other one was that he should play for his own country.

Either of those remarks would really push the button of an Algerian living in France. Having seen the match yesterday as well as the controversial headbutt I'm also much more forgiving of Zizou's action. I still maintain that he shouldn't have done it but given the context of what has happened I would say that it was understandable.

Zidane should have just blown up Matterazzi's car.

Hey guys, what happened to Brazil. Weren't they supposed to win the whole thing?

some reports point to materazzi insulting zidane's mother.

either way, zidane, elder that he is, should have put up with it, especially because they were playing on  all of sport's grandest stage.

since we're talking about football "villains" at the recently held World Cup, I guess it would be apt to talk about Cristiano Ronaldo.

When I heard that England went down to Portugal due mainly to Ronaldo's role I knew that it will be hard for him to go back to ManU. From what I've read it looks like my fears were not unfounded. The English fans now consider him their villain and Ronaldo knows it. He recently expressed that he does not want to play for Old Trafford anymore and is considering moving to Spain either to Real or Barcelona.

Villain or not this might be a big blow to my fave English team. Let's see if Sir Alex can diffuse the tension between Ronaldo and Rooney when practice resumes.

There really should be a football thread... I didn't know that there are a lot of footy fans here in PinoyDVD. ;D

Some renowned lips reader, with the help of an Italian translator claimed that Materazzi said this:

"you're a son of a terrorist whore"  and then adds "so just F**K off!!".......

Another bit of ManUtd news. Either Bayern or Real are interested in getting Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Sir Alex though is confident that he will be returning to Old Trafford.

Looks like the pre-season of the Premiership is getting a lot of action.

There's really been a lot of backlash in Man U since it was bought by the Glazer family... Fans are unhappy with Americans owning the club plus the Glazers haven't really been winning the over with their management decisions... they fired 3 of the long time directors of the club and replaced them with either members of the family or cronies... One good thing though is AIG (the company I work for) is the new shirt sponsor of the club  ;D ;D but the sponsorship was more of a repayment deal since the Glazer family have huge debts with AIG specifically tied in to their purchase of Man U... Medy baduy lang tingnan yung AIG logo on the Red Devils' jerseys since it's so plain  :P

Hey, I didn't know that they've got a new shirt sponsor. Are the new designs out? I have to get me the new jerseys again.

Despite the backlash I've still got high hopes for ManUtd they've got awesome talent and of course, where Rooney is, I'm there!

By the way, speaking of Zizou, a friend of mine based in Paris just emailed me and said Zizou is slated to be interviewed today. Maybe he'll finally shed light on the headbutting incident.

photos of the ManU players wearing the new shirts were already circulated internally as early as March...
you can view them here:

Thanks! It was not radically designed after all. Just a change in logo. I'm still going to get it though, hehe.

Zidane claimed that Materrazi repeatedly insulted his mother and sister although he did not elaborate on what the actual insults were ...
Materazzi has earlier admitted insulting Zidane but not his mother ...

here's the interview for those of you who can understand French :)

well looks like Eric Cantona and his JogaTV will have a harder task of making the game beautiful again :)

A good piece of video on YouTube tracing Materazzi's "naughtiness" on the field:
