The DVD is not yet out in the market... maybe in 2006? after Episode 3?

There's no report yet on when the trilogy will be released.

If you want the original trilogy on DVD, there's an ongoing petition to have George Lucas et. al, release it as soon as possible:  http://www.originaltrilogy.com/petition.cfm

Also, here's a related thread here:   George Lucas - Star Wars DVD

anyway the "bootleg" dvds that are being sold are just LD transfers and really far from being "crystal clear". they aren't even 5.1. i was also tempted last year to get a set but resisted after testing this inferior product.

From Digital Bits... YES!!!

We've heard from a number of industry sources we trust (and who have proven their reliability in the past) in the last few weeks. They're reporting that Lucasfilm is seriously considering releasing the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD late next year. In fact, our information indicates that some work is already under way toward a 4th Qtr, 2004 release. Word is that Lucasfilm is pleased with the format of The Adventures of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection they're releasing on 10/21 in conjunction with Paramount - so pleased, in fact, that they're planning to use the same format to release the classic Star Wars films. This would presumably mean a 4-disc set, with a disc for each film and a fourth disc of special edition materials for all three films. It would certainly make sense. First, it would be a great way to get a buzz going into early 2005, when the final film, Episode III, is set to arrive in theaters.

great news indeed!!!

it would be nice if lucas releases 2 versions of each movie. the original theater version and the versions he released a fer years back.

by doing so he pleases both the purists and the people who liked his remastered version more.

Yup, really hope this is true.  Matter of time lang talaga.  I'm sure George Lucas is just waiting for the right time to release the SW Original Trilogy on DVD and appease the fans.  As if Episode III needed a marketing boost.  ;D  But it does make sense to release the set before Episode III opens in May 2005, and not after.

Why is Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition isn't in DVD yet?
Am just wondering, why do you think the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition isn't out on DVD yet?

This Special Editions of the first Trilogy are those that came out as the 20th anniversary celebration re-release of the three films, which included never-before-seen footages that were cut 22 years ago on the original release because of budget constraints, and, plus new digital effects.

All of Lucas' frustrations way back that wasn't able to do because those were simply impossible to do, he all realized in the Special Edition.

So when will it come out? After Episode III has been released? Maybe a 6 or 7 disc set will come out after.

What you thinks?  ???

As reported before, George Lucas was waiting for the HD-DVD format, and the release of Episode III before he release all Star Wars films altogether. Maybe 2005 or 2007. So, just have to wait.

As with the HD-DVD, Disney will release all their animations before 2007 in regular DVD format. SO they can cash-in again when the new format arrives.

The probably reason why Lucas hasnt released the original trilogy on DVD is because he hasnt the time to do it himself.

HD-DVDs are optical discs, like CDs & DVDs, that can store more data for higher resolution video. This technology complements HDTVs.

The resolution of HD-DVDs & DVDs are as follows

1920x1080 = HD-DVD
720 x 576 = DVD

Higher resolution means more details can be seen on screen. This is similar to VCD & DVD. VCDs are malabo as compared to DVDs

That, my friends, is an invitation sent out by LucasFilm sent out earlier this week to distributors and businesses with whom they do frequent business. Someone at memorabilia website Yakface.com got their hands on a copy from a friend of a friend, etc., took a few digital photos and posted it online. Now this isn't your typical paper invite. This is a black plaque with a Darth Vader figurine standing perpendicular. Of course speculation began immediately on why LucasFilm would be inviting people to The Presidio (a complex Lucas has recently purchased). The first thought was to talk EPISODE 3 but that film isn't scheduled until May of 2005 and that seems a little unlikely. The next thought, which has been confirmed by a number of separate sources, is that George Lucas will take this opportunity to announce the upcoming release of the original STAR WARS trilogy on DVD. That's right, the most anticipated DVDs ever will finally be coming to video stores near you. When? It's still unclear but it seems very very likely that Lucas will announce exactly when on 11/5/03. Will JoBlo.com be there to report on this exciting news? Ummm, no. It appears press has NOT been invited to this event but we will have all the breaking news for you when, and if, the DVDs are announced by LucasFilm. For more on this story and more shots of the elaborate invitation, check out Yakface.com or The Digital Bits.

Guys, the first Star Wars trilogy is not yet set for release. George Lucas is keen on releasing the complete Star Wars 1-6 in one awesome boxed set DVD. So we all have to wait till 2006 after the release of Episode 3, and I tell you it's all worth it.
