There seems to be a lot of guys with Denon receivers. I wonder if anyone else has encountered the following problem.

I have a Denon AVR-2807. With certain DVD software (I think mainly kapag ang source is 2-channel audio or Dolby prologic), the AVR restricts the volume. You cannot raise the volume beyond a certain limit and the limit depends on the DVD. Paminsan -20.5, paminsan -16.5. The only way you can raise the volume further is to change the audio input setting to "external in." However, di na sya dumadaan sa equalizer ng AVR kaya ang pangit ng tunog.

There must be a way to defeat the suppression of the volume. Anyone has an idea how to do this? Anyone has an idea why Denon does this in the first place?

Thanks!

I seem to experience the same thing w/ my Yamaha 2500. I think (in theory) that the calibration microphone/auto setup detects your room acoustics & max volume before it becomes distorted or too loud and intolerable to human hearing.

Whenever I crank my volume, I can reach -5 volume w/o the speakers sounding too loud or too distorted. Try defeating your auto setup settings, maybe then you can crank it up.

Yes, that will likely work. Kaya nga lang, that defeats the whole purpose of the room equalization technology of the Denon AVR.  :( Pangit na tunog.

It maybe that the receiver limits the volume so that the amp won't clip. Anyway, is the -20.5dB recording classical?

I am pretty sure that's the intention. But I don't use the built-in amp of the Denon AVR. I have external amps hooked to the pre-out connections and these external amps are in no danger of clipping when the Denon limits the volume.

Anyway, is the -20.5dB recording classical?

These happened to concert DVD's. I don't think they were classical. Baka rock.  :)

It's annoying. May friend ako from abroad who loves Jethro Tull. Nagulat sya na meron ako. Problema nga is that the Denon wasn't allowing me to increase the volume to rock concert levels.  :) On other DVD's, no problem yun.

Anyhow, the problem doesn't happen that often. Just on a few particular DVD's and I just don't understand why.

Speaking of calibration mic...pano nyo po ba ginawa? Kasi nakalagay sa manual ng Denon that I you need to have a tripod.

All speakers are set to small and my subwoofer is also set too small.
Distance of speakers are set to default.
Subwoofer set to LFE

Btw speakers are Wharf 9.4 (fronts), CS (center) and DFS (surrounds) and sub is VX10.

Whoa, definitely not. Your room acoustics also depend on your furniture arrangement. Just calibrate w/ your normal furniture arrangement and place the mike where you usually sit. During calibration, I put my mike on top of the couch where I lean my head.

Yup. And when you add or move furniture, you need to calibrate again.

I also remembered putting an acoustic panel on a reflective side of my HT, when I calibrated again, that side w/ the absorber (panel) had to be increased by 1 db. Its a proof of the effectiveness of acoustics.

Wowowee Sir Matz!
Being a Denonian for the past 4 years, when its time to upgrade, I still prefer a Denon sound.
As of now, Im very contented/satisfied with my AVC-A1D (THX Ultra), I cant go louder than -20db... it will really rock my place!  ;D
Lesson is, it really pays off getting a powerful receiver your money can buy! It will also help you
avoid further SARS... More power to PDVD! ;)
Enjoy what you have!

Denon 1907 Question
« Reply #768 on: Dec 31, 2007 at 08:58 PM »
Just want to get your comments on what i have done in setting up my 7.1 HT:
Denon 1907
Front sp: Daichi 100 watts 6 ohms (floorstand)
Center sp: Daichi 100 watts 6 ohms (usual center)
Surround sp: Wharf 120 watts 6 ohms (bipolar)
Surround back: Daichi 100 watts ohms (satellite type)
Sub: Aiwa 1507 (10-inch)

After auto set-up po ng Denon 1907 using the provided mic, I just changed the speaker size of front and center speakers from large to small (as recommended in the manual for set up with subwoofer). I didn't change the distance and frequency crossover (which is at 60 hz).

So far I'm satisfied in the sounds and surround effects in this initial set-up (siguro dahil sanay ang tenga ko before sa dati kong ampli na bili ko lang sa raon). Just thinking, baka may dapat pa akong gawin to optimize my Denon 1907.

I'm using Pioneer DV400 to watch play CDs and watch DVDs which I connected to Denon 1907 using coaxial cable.  Sa audio set-up of this player, I turned off all the available settings such as (Equalizer etc.) and turned mode from stereo to Lt/Rt (which I did'nt really know what these really means). I changed it because I believe that Denon 1907 is already producing stereo sound (thinking na mado-doble ang stereo hehe).

Hope to get your comments. I will really appreciate any help.

I also have a Denon 1907.

I honestly believe this is the best brand new value for money receiver in the market today (currently selling for only 16500 pesos).

For speaker configuration, why don't you try setting the FRONT speaker to "LARGE" and Subwoofer mode  to LFE+Main.

Then try to play your discs and see if you like it better.  I think kasi that FRONTs should always be set to "LARGE" to get better sound from your floorstanders.

Audition it with your own ears to hear which is better for you.

Great Receiver!

Ever consider changing your speakers?  Don't even have that a high receiver model, but am currently and have been enjoying my denon wharfedale combo match.  Like it was said earlier, let your ears be the judge.  Do not be afraid to audition ;D

Happy New Year!

@ keypoo and blackie

Thanks po sa reply.... I will try your suggestions.  With regards to the speaker upgrade, di pa po muna kasi wala pa budget.  I'm considering wharf also that's why i bought wharf for surrounds to complete 7.1 after i bought my denon 1907.

By the way, did you change other settings such as DSP (rock, etc.)? if yes, what's your preference for movies?
There's also another one, cinema equalizer... did you turned it on? if yes, when do you usually turn this on, during movie watching lang ba?

No prefernce changes at all.  Listening to CD's on 5channel stereo is great.  For movies, if the DVD is DTS written, I let the DVD player and Receiver work their magic.  The Jazz setting for acoustic/or in hall concert DVD's is also worth listening too.  I have this Lisa Stansfield Concert DVD where she sang at a club.  Really sounded as if she was performing in front of you.  I could even smell the smoke from her cigarette......hehehe ;D

Cheers and Enjoy your receiver!

@blackie
Thank you too for the second motion. :)

I'm also using 1907 and the same with blackie I let my receiver do it's magic. The only problem I'm still annoyed right now with my Denon is that the center speaker seems not as loud as it should be. I don't know kung ito yung problema sa Denon receivers kasi I also talked to a fellow member and he has the same problem as I have. Actually this topic was already brought up in this thread pero hindi lang masyado na na-tackle.
