Scotch on the Rocks by Ishmael Bernal
« on: Sep 14, 2006 at 12:47 AM »
Hah!

It starred Rita Gomez and was done by Ishma back when he was younger..1960s.

But the producer, Bobby Suarez, burned down 1000 ft of negatives..you know why?

According to him, Ishma shot non-stop by following Rita Gomez around and consumed 1000ft of negatives.

The project was stopped.

Bobby Suarez produced the hilarious Cleopartra Wong which was one of the inspirations of Kill Bill.

Is this the one that should be Bernal's directorial debut before PAGDATING SA DULO?

According to Bernal's Filmography, Scotch on the Rocks was made in 1974, Pagdating sa Dulo in 1971. Here's the link:

A friend of mine who used to work in the Film center was able to see it. She said it was Rita Gomez's boldest role. So the film was never finished? but it says in this old brochure produced by the ECP that it was not released in the Philippines. Was it released in other countries?

I thought this film was not finished. Time to sleuth for a copy at Philippine Information Agency this week.

Hey Ed, what happened with my Cinemanila catalogue?  ;)

Actually my friend never specified if she saw the whole film or just parts of it. Part of her job was to look at hours of raw footage. But I was looking at the imdb entry of 70's bold star Yvonne (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1002390/)  and theres a lot of information about her so I guess the information was added either by Yvonne herself or someone close to her. Anyway it says there "she went on to play an Ermita whore in the Ishmael Bernal film Scotch on the Rocks to Remember... Bitter Coffee to Forget (1976), a film slated for international release but never shown in its homeland." So I guess the film was finished. I hope they release this on vcd or dvd if anyone finds it.

The raw footage must be somewhere out there or already in rotting stage. Rita Gomez seems to be the favorite actress of the late Ishma.

Far as I know it was never finished. Teddy considered it his holy grail till Suarez told Teddy what he'd done.

Nope. Suarez set it on fire and watched it burn.

I think Ishmael Bernal's aborted directorial debut was supposed to be AH, EWAN... BASTA'T SA MAYNILA PA RIN AKO (that starred singer Sonny Cortez).  Because of creative differences with the producer, he resigned and later made MANILA BY NIGHT.

I think that thousand feet of negative following Rita Gomez around in a single shot did it.

I'd love to have seen that shot, though.

Consider it another lost film. Phil. Information Agency had several copies of Gerry de Leon's NOLI ME TANGERE and other rare titles from their archive but no SCOTCH ON THE ROCKS. They are currently transferring their archive to another room because some prints are beginning to take the vinegar syndrome.

Nakakaawa tlga the state of film preservation in our country! If only the government instead of bangayan ng bangayan sa Senate will just concentrate on this matter.  >:(

Bobby Suarez claims, I am told, that "he threw the film into the Pasig River". Believable?  :o

What he didn't burn, I suppose. Yes, it's lost, burned, drowned, drowned. Sometimes the hunt for lost Filipino prints can drive you crazy.

And will drive you nuts. Since we are on the hunt on rare prints, is it true that EL FILIBUSTERISMO's print was misplaced at Berlin? This is really stupidity if you ask me.

Sure, Teddy found the restored print of Gerry de Leon's NOLI ME TANGERE now housed at Phil. Information Agency but what happened with EL FILI?

There's a video available somewhere. They screened it in the Viva Channel once, that's how I got to see it.
