This is more a comparison between R1 and R3.

The Ten Commandments (50th Anniversary Edition).  This one has been discounted to P650 during sales, eventhough I got mine at full 1100 priceThe discs are similar to R1, they even have the same art.  No complains there.  But the packaging is like night and day - more like noon and midnight to me.

Judge for yourself:
R1: Digipack with transparent plastic cover with art and metallic title.  The Digipack folds into a cover case.
R3: Transparent Amaray with flip to accomodate three discs.

Photos (pardon the beaten down plastic mat):

I always buys R3 before R1, because I like supporting local distributions, but packaging like these makes you wonder whether your heart is in the right place.

If you thought the reason R1 has much better packaging is price, think again.  Even at a sales price of P650, it's just marginally cheaper than R1 (Amazon's price is currently $18.99).

Mods:  If you feel this is more appropriately part of my Magnavision box rant, then feel free to merge them.  But I feel a separate thread makes it more visible, and would better inform the readers before deciding on what region to purchase.

Indeed, it is.

Kaya lang, when I look at my DVDs, both with great packaging and so-so ones,  gathering the same dust on the shelf with little or no repeat viewing whatsoever,  I tend to wonder what the fuss is all about with packaging.   ;D  They'll all sit in the same shelf waiting for the day they join the ranks of VHS tapes in that proverbial dustbin of video history.   ;D

Maybe.  But there are also times, when you remove it from the shelve, admire the packaging even when you didn't view it.  That counts for something, and that act of removing it to admire the packaging, might even entice you ro view it again...

Very true.  But it's equally true that when they go the way of the VHS junk, they'd be equally priceless.  ;D  Literally.

To each his own maybe.  Sure R1 (at current pricing) is more expensive by P250, but that's only during sales.   To me the satisfaction I get from a well-packaged product is worth more than that, and when DVD become obsolete, the neat package is still worth looking at, and probably deter me from dumping it into the waste bin.

The point is Magnavision could have make it much better.  They are charging (near) R1 pricing, so you expect better packaging than that.

Frankly, if pricing is an issue, then I would probably get the P475 budget Ten Commandments.  Limited issues are meant for collectors mostly...

I'll state for the record that even if offered the R1 free of charge, I would NOT replace my current R3 version.

The R3 looks at least 50% more space-efficient, so it wins out for me even if it isn't as attractive.

As techdude says, to each his own.  :)

Really? Maybe at equal pricing a person may choose the "space-efficient" R3, but to see someone refuse an R1 FREE OF CHARGE is a rarity... That's what I call true Filipino loyalty!

Hehe. PEACE!

Oh, how I wish "true Filipino loyalty" had anything to do with it!

A year ago, I'd have accepted an R1 of this as a back-up/display version in a heartbeat.

Right now?

My year-old DVD rack I had constructed is already operating at 130% capacity. I had to pull out my Disney, Tagalog, Hitchcock, Mel Brooks & Woody Allen Collections and store them elsewhere.

DVD Insanity is a serious disease...  :o

Kasya, pero sayang yung space para sa bagong title na bibilhin ko next month, 'di ba?  ;D

I've always been in the minority here at Pinoy DVD, since unless it really looks like trash, packaging is unimportant to me. Incomplete disc contents will make-or-break my R3 purchase, though.

As stated, to each his own.

For me, packaging is one of the key differentiator between original DVD and copies, and one way for the studios to sort of 'payback' the supporters of original DVDs.

OT:  Nice collection there, Mr. Hankey, in my guess, that's over a thousand DVDs in that 'Wall of Films' you got there...

packagingh is not important to me.what's important is the quality of the movie itself, the video and special features....that's why all my dvds are already in the cd cases i bought and cut the leaflets just to fit the cd cases.................................a true cineaste does not collect dvd because there are toys with it...it's kidstuff, a true cineaste collects dvds and blu ray/hd dvd  because of the beauty of the movie..................
