Warner Home Video unveils a Superman 14-Disc Collection
http://www.dvdreview.com

During a press event earlier today, Warner Home Video made a fairly sensational announcement that is sure to please fans of the “Superman” films. The studio has a 14-disc DVD set in the making of "Superman." The set, called Superman: Ultimate Collector’s Edition is filled with featurettes, documentaries, and other stuff surrounding the Superman feature films, as well as all these films themselves.
However, best of all, the set will also contain the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2!
As fans will undoubtedly know, Richard Donner was relieved as a director from the film and replaced by Richard Lester before he could complete the film. Still, 70% of the movie were finished at the time but never released, of course ,though part of his footage was actually used in Lester’s “Superman2 “ version. But not nearly all of it. There is about 45 minutes of footage that has never been seen before – especially not the way Richard Donner had envisioned it!
Now, the studio is working with Donner to create the cut of the movie that he had in mind originally, which is VERY cool, of course, painstakingly restored. During the press event we were treated to a five-minute clip from the film - the opening sequence which had never before been seen - and it was a blast!
Get ready for this one, because it’s going to be huge!

Bad news for those who are hoping that the movies (including Donner's Superman II) will be released separately.  Below is a post from dvdreview.com dated 2/1/2006:

Donner won't stand alone

As was previously announced, Richard Donner's version of Superman II is scheduled to be released as part of the Ultimate Superman Set. Sadly, Warner will not bre releasing the cut as a single release at this time.

Considering that Superman:  Ultimate Collector's Edition is a 14-disc set, ilang libo naman kaya ito?  I already have the four Superman movies and Supergirl, kaya I'm only interested in the Superman II Director's cut.

from Warner Chat transcript from thedigitalbits:
We can't give you the exact details of what you'll be seeing in the 14 disc set, as that is all in progress at the present time, However we can confirm the following important facts.. We will be releasing both the extended cut of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE (the one on DVD now) and the original, shorter theatrical version as well. Further, we will be releasing both the SUPERMAN II theatrical cut, and the "Donner cut" both in the box, or available singularly. Lastly, SUPERGIRL is coming, but SUPERGIRL will not be part of the 14 disc SUPERMAN set.

Oh, BTW, Superman Returns will be part of the 14-Disc Set... ; ;)

This set is turning out to be one of Warner's most sentimental projects.

I just read the April 2006 issue of Wizard magazine and according to them, Sometime in December, Warner Bros. will release a 14-disc box set that will include "Superman Returns" and an extra disc; both the shorter version of "Superman: The Movie" and it's extended cut; the "Superman 2" theatrical cut and the "Donner cut," which incorporates much of original director Richard Donner's version of the movie (partway through shooting, Donner was replaced by Richard Lester); plus, 2-disc special editions of "Superman 3" and "Superman 4."

Warner Home Video has made the following announcement about the upcoming "Superman" DVDs:

On November 28, in celebration of the year of Superman, Warner Home Video will release a host of DVDs, all starring the late Christopher Reeve in his landmark portrayal of the Man of Steel. Leading the way will be the long-awaited Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut ($24.98 SRP), directed by Donner and representing Superman II as it was originally conceived and intended to be filmed. An overwhelmingly requested title, the movie features Donner's original footage, shot but never used before, including a never-before-seen beginning, a never-before-seen resolution, with 15 minutes of restored footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El and much more.

Other titles to be released include Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition ($39.92 SRP) which features both the DVD debut of the 1978 theatrical version as well as the 2001 extended edition with commentary from director Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz, archival footage of additional scenes and screen tests.

Richard Lester's ever-popular Superman II will be available in a new Two Disc Special Edition ($26.99 SRP) including a new featurette, vintage television specials and additional vault elements; and Superman III and IV Deluxe Editions ($19.97 SRP).

Finally, The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection ($79.92 SRP) will be offered in an 8-disc boxed set including all the above (except Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut).    :o :o :o

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

Superman II will delight fans who, for years, have been imploring Warner Home Video via voluminous numbers of petitions, letters, phone calls and e-mails to release the Donner cut.

In fact, Donner had already shot most of the Superman II footage during Superman: The Movie. But as production on the sequel continued, creative differences between the director and the film's producers became irreconcilable and Donner left the project. Although Richard Lester was hired to finish production, he chose to make major changes to the film, leaving only vestiges of Donner's original vision and concepts in the version of Superman II that was ultimately released to theaters.

Now, nearly thirty years later, Warner Home Video is honored to grant the wishes of countless Superman fans. With this DVD release, Richard Donner has become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production with nearly all his footage "in the can." Adding back a substantial amount of that unused footage, the director has seen his original vision restored and brought to fruition.

Most notably, the "Donner cut" restores the Marlon Brando role, filmed for, but not included in the final theatrical release version of Superman II. The legendary Brando's performance as Jor-El has finally been restored in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son.

With so many other changes, large and small, including a variety of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman, this Superman II will prove to be an eye-opening experience and an important addition to film history.

Superman: The Movie (1978/2001) Four-Disc Special Edition

A box-office smash, an Academy Award® winner and a fan favorite since it first flew into theatres in December 1978, Superman: The Movie assembles an "A List" cast and creative contingent. At its heart is Christopher Reeve's intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel.

The movie's legacy was amplified when director Richard Donner revisited this beloved adventure 22 years later and integrated eight minutes into the film. Enjoy more footage of the Krypton Council, a glimpse of stars of prior Superman incarnations, more of Jor-El underscoring his son's purpose on Earth and an extended sequence inside Lex Luthor's gauntlet of doom.

Superman II Two-Disc Special Edition (1980)

Unwittingly released from Phantom Zone imprisonment, three super-powered Kryptonian criminals (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran) plan to enslave Earth - just when Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to show a more romantic side to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Gene Hackman (as Lex Luthor) also returns from the first film with a top supporting cast, witty Richard Lester direction and visuals that astound and delight.

Superman III Deluxe Edition (1983)

Meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming wiz. Reeve reprises his role, deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. When Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve plays both roles with dazzling skill.

Superman IV The Quest For Peace (1987)

Christopher Reeve not only stars as the title hero again but also helped develop the movie's provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow).

Supergirl

Creative forces behind Superman: The Movie bring another DC Comics hero to life with this fun- and effects-packed adventure about the Girl of Steel. Helen Slater plays the title role, battling a sorceress (Faye Dunaway) for control of an alien power orb. Peter O'Toole and Mia Farrow add more starpower.

So the 8disc Boxed Set hindi pa kasama yung Superman II Director's Cut?...Geez we have to buy pa a separate one?   :o

I dont think this one will be included too....

This was released about three weeks ago now, and as of present it seems sold out. Whats interesting about this LE was the fact that Bestbuy wrongfully advertised it (thus DVD collectors were suprised when they saw it In store and ransacked the limited quantity).

This is the 2disc limited edition of the Look Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman

Some features from the 2disc

- 2nd disc is an exclusive production diary from Brian Singer and some added facts about Superman
- 5 Superman Mini Poster Cards (replica of theatrical posters of the past Superman films)

Yes, it was not available at any stores (even Amazon, maybe in the future at the marketplace section with a JackedUp price due to its scarcity)

There is another store but not in US, I think it was in Canada who got the rights to release it with French soundtrack.

This is perfect for those who already bought the old 4-Disc "The Complete Superman Collection" - it already has the interesting extras for Superman I, and we could care less about extras for the last two turkeys. The SII Donner Cut is really the only one we'd want to add to our collection.

I commend Warner for this decision. Unlike most greedy studios that make you double/triple dip to get ONE additional item that you'd like to add to your previously purchased set, they've made the one new thing worth collecting a stand-alone disc.

Peter Jackson... take note!  ;D

I'm really glad that Warner has decided to come up with individual releases for each movie.  At least, we'll be able to have choices in what to get.  Unlike if they put everything in just one package, then you'll be forced to get the whole set even if you just want to have the Superman II:  Donner Cut.

It's a good thing they seperated the Donner Superman II from the box set unlike the Matrix Box set which contains the upgraded version of the Matrix that has not yet been released seperately.

From Supermanhomepage.com:

Access Hollywood aired several scenes from “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut” on Friday’s episode and those scenes are now available to be viewed here.

The video's resolution is quite low -- I just don't know if it's because of my dial-up connection. Based on the three short scenes shown, I can't wait for November 28 to arrive!  It's going to be my birthday gift to myself.   ;D  ;D

Wonder if the Donner Cut of Superman II will live up to the hype...  given that Superman II (as it is) is often acknowledged as the best of the Superman movies...

So for me who hasn't bought any of the Superman films on DVD, I would then be buying the Chris Reeve boxset, The Supes II Donner Cut and Superman Returns?! That's a lot, I hope it's worth it.  ;)

You don't really have to buy the Christopher Reeve boxed set, since III and IV are quite BAD, unless you want to own them "for completion." Superman Returns is a direct sequel to Superman II, and pretends Superman III and IV never happened.

The 4-Disc Superman 1 is overkill - the fourth disc's features are non-essential, and you really don't need the theatrical cut if you have a director's cut. No scenes were shifted nor deleted, there were just additions.

So personally, I'd just go for the current 2-Disc (or single flipper) Superman, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, and Superman Returns. But that's in theory.

I'm "Mr. Completion" in reality.  ;D

==========

Thanks for the link, rafgar! Now I'm really excited about the Donner cut.  :D

I was looking at some of the scenes in the Richard Donner cut versus Dick Lester in the Access hollywood feed. Dick Lester's action scenes are quite campy compared to what Donner originally shot especially with the final battle between the 3 bad guys. For example, i always found the shot where Superman struck Non causing him to hit the  Empire State Building to be out of place. Donner's version of the same scene was much better.
