American History X

Watched this several times and I still like this movie.  Edward Norton, buffed and all, shines here as a fine actor.  Great storyline and moving plot.  Video, though not as astounding as Avatar or I-Robot, is above average.  Crisp and very film-like, both the colored and black and white scenes were terrific!

Kung Fu Panda

Who doesn't love this animated feature? Watching it in full HD makes the experience even more fascinating.  Video, Sound and the extras are perfect.  A flawless BD in my book.  Demo quality indeed.

But the PQ is too Minority Report, too Saving Private Ryan, too artistic (grainy and funky color saturation), too Spielberg... ;)

Seven Swords (from Dragon Dynasty)

So-so PQ, disappointing AQ.  I found the movie too long and dragging.  I've seen better fight choreography from other Donnie Yen flicks.  :-\

The Incredible Hulk

Love this superhero flick.  Have seen this several times on DVD ( I also have the 2 disc DVD edition ).   The upgrade to BD is solid as video and audio will blow you away.  Glad to own the BD.  Replay value is quite high for me.

LA Confidential

One of the very first dvds I've watched, this remains a modern classic especially in HD.  Truly one of my top 10 movies of all time.  PQ, though not astounding as the Incredible Hulk, is glorious and film-like.  No complaints.  SQ is in True HD.  The gun fight scenes in the end featuring Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe rocks!  Extras are aplenty too.  Though not in HD, they are substantial and interesting.   I already disposed my old R1 single disc DVD in a snapper case and got hold of this BD.

Nice...I got this but haven't got the time to watch it as my "watch list" keep pushing back by the more recent films.

The Great Raid (Director's Cut)

Love this movie where Cesar Montano has more screen time than Avatar's Sam Worthington.  Outstanding PQ.  Has that desaturated appearance.  Love every scene here.  PQ is equally impressive particularly the gun battle scenes.  Terrific workout for my HT.  The raid finale was so well executed. Proud to be Pinoy!

I haven't seen the Theatrical Cut but reviews point out that the Director's Cut is the SHORTER, MORE ACCURATE and RECOMMENDED version.

from dvd talk - Director's Cut notes: Given that I did not see The Great Raid during its theatrical run, I cannot, with any accuracy, explain the differences between the two versions. But the director does a very good job, via audio commentary, of explaining why the DC is shorter than the theatrical cut. Essentially, he snipped out 95% of the "made-up" stuff in an effort to make 'his' version the most factually accurate. The sequences that were snipped from the theatrical version are included here as part of the Deleted Scenes section

from 411mania.com - When I saw this film in the theater, I was intrigued by the history aspect, but not by the film because it was somewhat dull with no spark of drama merged with action. As I watched the director's cut, I gradually noticed that I was viewing a completely different, and much improved film. This version has cut out a lot of the romance angle between Major Gibson and Margaret Utinsky. This is definitely for the better. In addition, all the fictionalized suspense sequences that the studio forced upon the director were eliminated to produce an accurate and smooth flow. Be advised, this is the version that is worth recommending.

The Dark Knight

Thought it was overrated at first but grew on me the past 2 years. Initially bought the locally available 2 disc DVD but was very displeased by the PQ, the BD's the way to go.

The Wolfman (Theatrical and Director's Cut)

Above average PQ and AQ.  I watched the director's cut.  I thought it was nicely done and I didn't find it boring, contrary to most reviews.  Loved the blood and gore and the transformation scenes were amazing!  There were 2 alternate endings included in the blu-ray and I agree that the best ending was the one that made the final cut.  :)

Resident Evil : Extinction

Not as enjoyable as the first and second but still packs up a punch as a popcorn flick.  PQ is outstanding.  Finely detailed especially in the desert scenes.  Milla's flesh tones is somewhat enhanced making it a bit glossy, just like Ultraviolet.  Honestly, I hated it ( but I still love Milla :o ).  Sound is in DTS and will rock your HT.

Weeds Season 3 ( first 2 episodes )

PQ is spectacular.  I love the colors and the crisp detail.  First TV series that I watched in HD and how I wish all TV series will be this perfect.  In episode 1, however, I noticed a scene with heavy grain.  This was validated by bluray.com review :  "Grain isn't visible over most shots, but a few exhibit a rather heavy grain field. Check out the 25:40 mark in episode one for an example."  But other than that, PQ is marvelous!  SQ is also good.  In fact, for a dialogue-driven series, I thought the DTS HD is an overkill.  But I'm not complaining.   And oh yes, I love this series too.  Love it more in BD!

U2 360 at the Rosebowl

-Majestic stage, big crowd.  There were a lot of grainy shots because of the outdoor night concert but the audio was superb in DTS-HD MA. I missed this 80's band.  They still have that charm with their music. Shot in HD, this is a must watched especially if you missed the concert.   Bono and his band are just so amazing.

Even in DTS, this concert is pretty impressive for such a huge venue.

The Rock

My favorite Michael Bay action flick.   The BD totally blows away my SD Criterion Collection in terms of video and audio quality.  PQ is superb, though there are some grain here and there but I guess that was the intention of Bay, to give it a gritty, grainy look.  SQ is awesome.  Lots of explosions, typical of Bay.  The humvee-ferrari car chase scene is still thrilling to watch.  I remember being in total awe when I first saw this in the movies then.  And oh yes - that Filipino chef swearing in "malutong na tagalog" (p****g i** m*, an*k ka ng p***) after he was bumped by Sean Connery in the kitchen was a total blast!  All extras in the Criterion Collection are also present in this BD.
