The Dark Knight

-I have already watched this in DVD twice and after seeing a lot of this movie as material for flatscreen demo purposes, I decided to open my BD. i tried playing it in my fat PS3 and the disc can't be read. BTW, this is a Region A (US) version. Tried ejecting and inserting it to no avail. My back up was my HTPC and I was able to watch this through. I just noticed the changing aspect ratios throughout the movie. Is this normal for this BD? Sometimes it is widescreen with black bars then becomes fullscreen.  ??? After all the negative experiences with this BD, on the brighter side, it is really worth having this for reference quality both for audio and video. The dark scenes still retain its detail. The LFEs and surround sound is simply amazing. It outputs even those frequencies which would just rock your seats without any audible sound. Galing! Definitely a priced gem in my measly BD collection.  ;D

as per your question about the aspect ratio of the film. Dont worry coz those are the proper aspect ratios of the film from the transfer. It switches from Aspect ratios: 2.40:1 to 1.78:1. It is how the IMAX version of the film was to be intended and it is normal. Those fullscreen scenes are the IMAX version and the normal aspect ratio goes back to 2.40:1. Noticed when those action pack scenes switches to the IMAX aspect ratio. Example of that is when Batman intrude Mr. Lao from the top of the building. I love that scene btw.

Thor- the action scenes were good in the first 30 minutes or so, but the story got boring after Thor was banished from Asgard. Ho-huum...

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
So much better movie than what I expected.  Special Features showing the gollum guy doing the ape acting (for motion capture) was pretty impressive.

Friends With Benefits
Mila Kunis is the definitely the most beautiful element of this movie but the quality of background musics was very hi-fi sounding. Nice idea but ended rather cliche - oh well.

Tomb Raider 2 (Cradle of Life)  I liked this movie but it kinda lost my interest when I watched it on BD :o But the PQ and SQ of this UK version is heaven.  Much, much better than its predecessor.

Green Lantern  Watched the Extended Cut.  Can anybody tell me what was the extended part?  Call me nuts but I still liked Green Lantern!  My kids loved it, especially in High Def.  I thought the PQ was excellent with popping 3D effect.  Sound was also very good.  Overall, a terrific BD.  Great to have it in my superhero collection.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

-another re watch but this time in HD! I appreciated the scenery better with more vibrant colors and even on those dark scenes the details were still evident. The cave troll scene really exemplified the DTSHD-MA soundtrack. Surround sound was fully utilized with the subwoofer pumping those LFEs. Bilbo's attempt to grab the ring again from Frodo at the city of the Elves made me jump! Orlando Bloom became the favorite of my 8y/o daughter.  The end was prodding me to go the the 2nd installment...The Two Towers.  ;D

The Soloist

Once in a while, I have to take a break from watching high def eyecandies, (which incidentally is now slowly piling up) and have a dose or two of engaging & heart wrenching dramas. This true to life Robert Downey Jr. / Jamie Foxx starrer fits the need and it didn't disappoint.

Being a relatively new Dreamworks title, the image is very good. It didn't lack depth or clarity as you could easily see details such as the red spot on Downey's eye. The Dolby True HD track is suited for this mainly dialog driven film with some classical music thrown in the mix.

If you are a parent, I'd recommend this for your tweens and teens, just to make them aware how hard it was just a few decades ago how it was in America.

from imdb.org -- An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960's decides to write a book detailing the African-American maid's point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.

The Departed

One of my all-time favorites finally upgraded to blu. No need to dwell on the film's merits (or demerits to some critics). The transfer is topnotch. A great looking DVD when it came out, the BD kicked the quality a couple of notches higher. Just watch the Leo & Matts' night time chase scene which was really beautifully captured. The audio? Maybe I'm just a sucker for PCM tracks. Too bad studios have abandoned it perhaps due to space considerations. The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" & Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" never sounded this good!

Hearts Of Darkness. An Apocalypse Now Documentary. A must have for "Apocalypse Now" Fans while the film is on shooting in the Philippines at the time of Marcos. Francis Coppola is one of my favorite director / writer is just as brilliant as ever.
