Citizen Kane (70th anniv edition)

Having seen it previously in VHS, I was stunned, and a bit dismayed, on how clean it looked on blu-ray.

The extras are definitely a must-see in what many critics say is the greatest film of all time. Highly recommended!

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Millenium Trilogy 2009 (Extended Edition)
9 hours, 3 titles (..Dragon Tattoo, ...Played With Fire, ...Kicked The Hornet's Nest), 2 episodes per title, 1.5 hours per episode

Awesome movie and very difficult to stop watching once started. Chose the English audio because the Bluray subs are too small to read while listening to the original Swedish audio.

Now I'm curious just how the new Hollywood version (for Title 1) compares.

Mad Men Season 2, 3 and 4 (3 episodes in).

X-Men: First Class. Several months after seeing it in the theaters, rewatching it on bluray just reinforced my feeling that this is the best comic book movie to come out in 2011.

The Cider House Rules

An all time favorite of mine finally given the blu-ray treatment. Still touching after all these years. Topnotch video transfer. The 5.0 DTS HD MA is more than adequate since this is a dialog driven film.

Queen Days Of Our Lives 2011

Documentary about the rock band Queen from their formation, rise to fame, creation of timeless songs and huge hits, death of Mercury and beyond - divided into 2 parts - 1970s and 1980s and beyond.

Lots of old footages in restored standard def (clear enough) including some previously unreleased footages of a very sick looking Mercury towards the end of his life. Current interviews of surviving members, managers, and associates are in high def of course.

Audio is only LPCM 2.0 which was rather choosy on the receiver - didnt produce any sound on my old Yamahas but did on the newer Onkyos albeit rather low level output. Nonetheless, the sound quality is sufficient as the content is primarily narrative.

A highly recommended watch for any Queen fan. That band was absolutely awesome during their time. Their 1985 Live Aid performance still gives me the creeps.

Contagion 2011

Not bad movies at all in terms of image quality, sound quality and story, but viewed these after watching the highly captivating Millenium Trilogy, so it was kinda let down.

Killer Elite's DTS-HDMA is pretty loud - lots of action all over the place. Piki talaga si Clive Owen tumakbo - hehehe and Statham still acts like a stone. De Niro looked botoxed.

Contagion - parang bitin ang story but what else is there to tell in the end, unless they wanted to end the world. Lots of stars in cameo roles. Sodenbergh movie kaya expect some rather peculiar image quality.

BBC David Attenborough's Frozen Planet 2011 (3-Disc Edition)

I've only been halfway through but it's just plain awesome!!!

Highlights so far, polar bears doing their thing. Never knew they only stop to make love and finally part ways when the male bear gets totally exhausted fighting against other male bears who wants to get a piece of the pie.

And very funny scenes involving penguins stealing pebbles from each other in order to build more beautifull nests that will attract the female penguins.

Specs says video is in 1080i but its very clear. Some of the close shots with polar and antartic animals - I can't imagine how they pulled that off - until they show towards the end of each episode some production highlights.

Richard Attenborough - that old man can sell anything with his narration but he will always be Mr. Jurassic Park to me...hehehe. I wouldn't mind a sexy female voice like that of Sigourney Wearver though. Beautiful and clear DTS-HDMA sound.

Highly recommended. Damn, why didnt we have these kinds of shows when we were struggling in elementary and high school science.

Have not seen The Frozen Planet myself, so I'm not really sure, but is this narrated by Richard Attenborough or by David Attenborough? I'm thinking it's by the later.

When I was young, I remember loving David Attenborough's old documentary series' Life on Earth & The Living Planet. I wanted to become a zoologist / wildlife filmmaker before....
