Drive 2011

This is the 3rd Ryan Gosling (new) movie I watched in 3 months, and if the Critics Choice Awards is right, there are supposed to be 7 more Gosling movies in the next months.  This young actor is pretty much the flavor of 2011-2012 in Hollywood.

DTS-HDMA sound alternates between very loud car engine, gun blast and violent scenes, and, almost utter silence.  Very few dialogues that there were scenes where I wanted to jeer the characters to say something while eating ube.  hehehe.  But that's part of the film's aura. Soundtrack was cool I thought.

Nothing special about the 1080p visual quality because it's got the indie look for the most part.

What else?   Cameo role by the boobsy Mad Men star - I wish she had more.  The leading lady I thought was Michelle Williams.  The main crooks were pretty creepy.  Very good movie, but that ending was stupid I thought - or Gosling's character was supposed to be that stupid perhaps.

Got to finish the entire series including all special features during the weekend.   This has got to be one of the best earth-related documentaries produced.

More highlights.  The fight to the death between the young bison (prey) and the wolf (predator) was quite heart-breaking, although I wished they showed more gory details.  And a cocoon that takes 14 years to become a moth due to cold climate, freezing itself to death conditions during the winter then miraculously resurrects as the weather warms.

"Freeze Frame" is some kind of special feature at the end of each episode that run for about 10 mins.  Freeze Frame showed how the crew braved the colds of the Arctic and the Antartic, the challenges and risks faced and techniques employed in order to capture some of the most spectacular and daring shots that were never made before.   In addition, there were 2 more special feature episodes including one about climate change.

The penguins are soo freaking cute.

BBC David Attenborough's Frozen Planet 2011 (3-Disc Edition)

I've only been halfway through but it's just plain awesome!!!

Highlights so far, polar bears doing their thing.  Never knew they only stop to make love and finally part ways when the male bear gets totally exhausted fighting against other male bears who wants to get a piece of the pie.

And very funny scenes involving penguins stealing pebbles from each other in order to build more beautifull nests that will attract the female penguins.

Specs says video is in 1080i but its very clear.  Some of the close shots with polar and antartic animals - I can't imagine how they pulled that off - until they show towards the end of each episode some production highlights.

Richard Attenborough - that old man can sell anything with his narration but he will always be Mr. Jurassic Park to me...hehehe.  I wouldn't mind a sexy female voice like that of Sigourney Wearver though.   Beautiful and clear DTS-HDMA sound.

Highly recommended.  Damn, why didnt we have these kinds of shows when we were struggling in elementary and high school science.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 2011

Title palang mysterious na.  The plot is rather cliche - a retired high ranking MI6 officer who has to find the mole within the organization during the Cold War.  However, it didnt feel like an old re-hashed espionage film.  Setting is the 70s. It looks very 70s.  But the screenplay is very much "current" which in my opinion, means more fulfilled, which is especially brilliant because there are lots of characters involved in the movie.

Bluray image quality is generally grainy (like Black Swan grainy) and murky - suits well with the plot

DTS-HDMA audio is all about narratives and dialogues - very clear with no explosions.  Dialogue clarity is good for those having problems with the English accent.  hehehe

Well acted.  Brilliantly presented.  Fantastic movie I thought and well deserving of BAFTA's recognition.

Highly recommended.

Serendipity 2001

Bluray release FINALLY! -with a pretty clean image quality.

My wait for this movie was almost like the main character's search for the right Love In The Time Of Cholera book.  hehehe

A 10-year younger Kate Beckinsale looked as fresh as she did in the recent Golden Globes.

I've forgotten about the DVD release but I suspect that the Special Features are identical to those included in this BD.

The Double 2011

Surprisingly a good movie, with a nice twist at the end.  Richard Geere still makes his signature pa-cute pipikit-pikit eyes acting, and still looks slim and fit next to a much younger actor.

Nothing extra striking about the image and sound quality. Just your vanilla high def image with DTS-HDMA audio but nonetheless a pretty decent watch.

Taylor Swift Live

Picture quality is terrible, the whole concert was soooo grainy! The bonus features are much more clearer. Maybe the director wanted the concert to look that way. A waste of money. Buy the dvd instead and you'd probably get the same clarity!

Totally agree in terms of picture quality.  My solution for grains is to tone down the settings of the plasma (not sure if that is effective on an LCD) - but this specific concert BD's image quality is pretty bad to begin with.

Sound quality is also below par, for a BD release.

Taylor is good (getting better) as a live performer though.

Johnny English Reborn 2011

Halakhak mode here and there.  Very refreshing to watch something like this in between some serious flicks.

It's a pretty good movie, in any case;  imaqe quality is nice and DTS-HDMA5.1 sound is decent.  Si Ms. X-Files lang ang nakaka-asiwa ang fake English accent.

Rocky Balboa... never ceases to inspire. (now that ive come to terms with the fact that im not getting any younger. LoL!)

Watched all the extras, deleted scenes, and so on.
also saw the alternate ending. Im glad they went with the original ending though.

Im thinking this BD will have 3 -4 more views from me for this year. :D

In Time 2011

BITIN!  The plot had potential for something memorable, but the film ended rather forgettable.  Medyo nahilaw.

Decent high def image and sound quality if that is a concern

That young leading lady looked pretty hot. She was the star of Red Riding Hood but her complexion looked more like Snow White.  The nude scene in the water was most likely a double though.

I still feel that Timberlake would suddenly sing and dance everytime I see him on a film.  Hehehe. But he certainly has better longevity than Britney.
