How Do You Arrange Your DVD Collection?
« on: Jul 15, 2001 at 07:37 AM »
Although my DVD population isn't really that awesome, I've  accumulated enough DVDs for me to be bothered by this:

How in hell do I arrange my DVDs?

This really got me thinking since I started to place all my DVDs in a large enopugh shelf space.  Would I arrange them alphabetically?  Nah, too easy.  How about by dte of purchase?  It might prove difficult to search for a DVD if the collection grows larger.  By genre, then?  Some movies cross genres, so how do I arrange that?  How about by DVD publisher (like put all Warner Bros snapper cases together, all Criterions together, etc.)?  Or by filmmaker (put all Kevin Smith movies here, Rob Reiner films there...)?  Or by UPC?  Or from greatest to suckiest?  Or by random, using a series of Fourier Transforms of Fibonacci-based equations derived from statistical graphs of how many people think The Rock a) sucked, b} ruled, and c) can't decide?

So far, the only arrangement I am satisfied with is putting all my X-Files boxed sets in a separate shelf.   :)

You're right, I'm a bit obsessive compulsive, but I'm pretty sure you had the same problem at some point in your collecting.   :P

HELP!   :o

i used to arrange my dvds by alphabetical order but got tired of that. now my dvds are arranged by what i would sell to would watch next w/ the inc. odd case type
and what would get ruin the most (i keep the more "rare" dvd in the middle and the less valueble kind on the sides, kinda like chess.) :) strange ain't it?

I just place them in my cabinet with the special covers wrapped inside a separate plastic container to prevent scratches and other possible damage.

I don't have much DVDs yet but I'm always in search of a good shelf for it. One that will keep it from dirt and yet keep is organized in a certain manner.

I have two small shelves/bookcases for my dvds.  I arrange them by studio. The Warner dvds are easy to arrange since all in snapper cases. Then, all the Universal titles, MGM, Dreamworks (just a few...), etc. They look better with all the logos, pictures in almost a straight line when you arrange them by studio. Plus, you can put a particular director's films side by side when possible. (I like looking at my Woody Allen dvds :); Scorcese gives me a headache though since his films are produced by different studios.) Of course this way, it's difficult to pick a title if you're in a mood for a certain genre. So, at least, I put all my concert and music dvds together since these are the most played.  Boxsets are separate, they're on the lowest rung since they come in different sizes.

When I get new dvds, I put them on the "tail end." After I watch them, I insert them into the studio slots which means I have to move dvds around.  ;D  I'm not complaining.
I rather arrange and rearrange dvds than have a static collection.

i have 3 bookcase of dvd's, one in the living room
and the other two are in my study or computer room.

the one in the living room is pretty much divided by my
dvd's on the upper shelves and the two bottom shelves are for my daughters dvd's.
these dvd's that are in the living room are the more recent release , childrens, concert and karaoke dvd's.

the dvd's in my study are basically arranged alphabetically.
i have the dvd's with the amray case on one bookshelf and the dvd's with the snapper case on another bookshelf
so as to have a more uniform look on the dvd's...
i also separate my anime ,kung fu and box set dvd's with the rest.

i know this is not the best way to arrange dvd's since most of the times i'm going back and forth trying to find a dvd.

unless someone here can suggest a better way...

I just arrange them by the titles aphabetically, regardless of genre, dvd cases or production company. It's easier to locate the movie if I wanted to watch it again for the nth time. Besides, the variety in dvd casing not all aligned together or as smooth as others gives the arrangement personality I think. Placing dvds with same cases in one place looks monotonous to me after trying it for a couple of days. I try not to cramp them altogether though so the dvds with weak cases don't get squeezed pretty tight.

Benny's idea of arranging them by filmmaker is pretty good. And like him, I like Woody Allen too.

How about arranging them by their edition? Like all Criterion in one place, Special in another, Platinum next, or just simple releases .... alphabetically. Hmmm.. that sounds like a good idea .... let me try that and see how it looks. Tata !  ;D

bro,

i arrange it via date of purchase, then if keep or snap casing para pantaypantay kasi yung keep case okey lang but the snap ay kailangan ay maingat ka kasi exposed na agad yung carton/label nya eh, kaya as much as possible ay nakalagay pa din sa original celophane or i will buy an individual plastic per case na resealable.

nagpagawa din ako ng mga sticker label sa ROBEE para personalized kasi lahat ng disc ko ay may purchase date, place, and the price para alam ko pa rin kung magkano ko siya nabili pag tagal ng panahon.
iba din ang compilation ng per region.

thanx,

vax

I arrange it in Alphabetical Order and in Category.  So far I have three categories:
1) DVD Movies
2) Animated DVD
3) Musical DVD
I think I'm ok about it

The first row which in the bukana is where my prized collections are like the criterion, UEs, 2-discs, and special cases - para kita ko kaagad.

Sa likod na yuong ibang DVDs ko.

I stacked them up! Thso which were my Favorites are at top, while the seldom watched dvds are at the bottom

But somehow I saw this thread that does not recommend stacking dvds:

I arrange my collection alphabetically. It makes it easy to find things, keep track of what's missing, and I don't mind moving things around when I add to my collection  :)

arranged like books on a shelf.  biggest case to the left and smaller cases to the right.  tin cases and special cases to the left.  snap cases to the far right.  other than that, foreign films stick together; mainstream together.  since they're quite few, at this point, need not be alphabetical.  rearrange them a bit within their sections at times just for fun and see how they look from afar.

May bago na naman akong arrangement.

I placed all my collectibles, especially those with metal tin cases, special cases (like boxed set) sa front row with the cover facing forward (parang mga showcased books).  Sa likod niya yuong mga ibang collectibles na medyo dark background to give a dim effect.

These are of course enclosed in a glass cabinet para hindi alikabukin.

The rest, I arrange like books in a separate shelf.

I eventually remove one from the main display everytime I get a new DVD.

I use a dehumidifier na rin to minimize moisture in the cabinets.

Like my 500 or so CDs, arranging DVDs to achieve some degree of retrieving convenience is a headache at the start but after a while I get used to it.

I classify my DVDs as follows;

(1) Jazz, Pop Concerts & MTVs - and among them alphabetically by artist.
(2) Classical Symphonic performances - among them alphabetically by composer
(3) Animation and Kidstuff (Mullan, Toy Story, Cats & Dogs, Stuart Little) - no particular arragement within coz there's only about 30 of them
(4) Warner Bros (snapper case - looks nice in a row) - no particular arrangement as I have only about 30 of them.
(5) Action blockbusters (sequels together)
(6) Sci-Fi (sequels together)
(7) Drama (contemporary & period)
(8) Comedy(contemporary and period)
(9) Musicals (very few)
(10) Oldies (mostly 40s and 50s, just starting)

Having this in mind, its difficult to be strict about this.  Like AI which is both drama and Sci-fi.  And some like AMADEUS is both drama and musical.  Perhaps as my collection further grow I might add OSCAR winners (like BEN HUR, UNFORGIVEN, the Godfather), Period classics (like BARRY LYNDON and THE LAST TEMPTATION).  And among those in snapper case, there's a mix of these.  Actually, I could think of a lot of classification and end up with just 2 titles or so for each.  So far those are the ten classifiations I have for which I use some very heavy object/figurine/vase as separator on the shelf.  Looks nice from a distance.

i bought a cabinet from dimensione, but i am having problems with it. although the shelves are adjustable, i always end up with a slot that would fit two rows of dvds plus another layer on top.(magulo ba?) ??? , so i have a row of dvds behind, a row at the front, and another row on top of them. somehow, this leaves those dvds at the back unmanageable and out of sight  :-\ . anyway, i thought this cabinet was enough but somehow i may have to buy another one soon. thanks to pinoydvd ::)

BTW i arrange my dvds like this : criterion titles on top shelf, action/adventure on 2nd and 3rd, boxed on the 4th, and horror on the bottom  :)

I first try to arrange my DVDs into two:  Keep case and Snap case.  Then, in each I separate them by 3 genres.  1.  Basta may real actors, ordinary movie;  2.  Animation, and 3.  Musicals.

I keep my DVDs (kaunti pa lang naman, eh) in my side table, to prevent sun and air exposure/damage. ;D ;D ;D

i'm thinking of sorting my DVDs according to packaging.  snap cases together, keepcases on the other side.

pwede rin by region.

pero parang mas logical kung by category. (eh pano kung di ko alam ang category?  should harry potter be classified under KIDS or under FANTASY?  how do we diffentiate ACTION from ADVENTURE?)

alphabetical na nga lang siguro.  ;D ;D ;D
