lOOKING FOR CUBE-LIKE OR MINIATURE HT 5.1 SYSTEM
« on: Nov 28, 2006 at 11:33 AM »
SPEAKERS ONLY......(AMP AND DVD CAN  BE BOUGHT SEPERATELY).

THE BOSE SPEAKERS LOOK GREAT BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ON MANY DIFFERENT BOARDS THE SOUND QUALITY IS FAIR AND OVER RATED FOR THE BIG BUCKS INVOLVED.  MY BUDGET IS ABOUT 25 THOUSAND PESOS.  ....FOR SPEAKERS ONLY.

SPEAKERS ARE TO BE WALL MOUNTED AND I REALLY PREFER AND NEED THE SMALLER CUBE LIKE AS THEY ARE SPACE SAVERS.

ANY RECOMMENDATIONS?

might want to throw in our castle compact system as a possible option :)  They are very musical and can also do HT well.

I'm gonna second sir Darrel's suggestion. It's either the SA-3s or the LS-32s for me. They're the closest thing to Bose jewel cubes, even better, with treated paper cones and fabric surrounds, the clarity and detail just can't be beat for it's size and price. The SA-3s go for around 1,000 pesos per pair and the LS-32s at 1,600. I have 4 pairs of SA-3s and a pair of the LS-32, which is significantly heavier. But, you're going to need a sub. Just my thoughts. ;)

I am in a similar predicament, looking for a compact wall mounted speaker system for my 2ndary bedroom setup.

My choices now are:
1.) Q acoustics 1010 - only a pair plus sub for a 2.1 setup (i have a spare active and a passive sub). Cute tiny speakers that sound great for HT & HiFi. 9k a pair. For now 2.1 is ok na, 2ndary lang naman eh (watching non-action & P**ted). But those 1k Daiichi  for surrounds are tempting, mwahaha. :D

2.) Onkyo SKS-HT230 5.1 Home theater speaker system. Fancy looking, not bad sounding @ 20+k. Will look great beside your flat panel TV. But I have a sub na so the Q looks like a better choice.

I auditioned the Onkyos at sights & sounds.

Do also check out Castle speakers. I auditioned them last week for 2 hrs. & they are stunning. Parang mini Pro Acs at less price. Its a cute mini satellite in a sealed (no holes) real wood box. And they are made to be put near walls. Excellent performer w/ tubes.

Its a bit expensive @ P22.5k a pair, but for the sound I heard, I might just settle for 2.1 for my 2ndary setup. Its small & portable so I plan to bring it to my primary setup from time to time to hear it perform with tubes.

Isip isip....

COMPACT SATELLITE

Quality loudspeakers do not come any smaller than this. Following significant research into the optimum design requirements for a satellite speaker it quickly became apparent that any design smaller than the chosen size would lead to the significant sonic impairment of the system. Once this basic design parameter had been established, the Castle design team then concentrated on the design and construction of a cabinet as inert as possible and to the development of excellent drive units for installation in the cabinet.  Php 22,500

I forgot to recommend this. This was my favourite sub 20k satellite combo:

JBL SCS 200.5

I actually bought one yesterday for my bedroom setup. Wall brackets included. I was about to go for the Onkyo HTS but I suddenly recalled this JBL model w/c was already good enough for me.

No offense but at below 20k, it will kick BOSE ass anytime, specially in HT.

Dude...no offense taken.  I own the Bose 301 speakers and they have rocked my world for over 10 years.  NEVER a problem or complaint.  I had considered the bose acoustimass 10 and 15 but always thought they were only fair as they did not have a solid  midrange.  After in depth research and more auditions I find the acoustimass again to be lacking and over priced.

We also have BOSE cubes giving music to a lobby & a restaurant. As far as background music & speaker visibility is concerned, I agree, no complaints or problems here either. But for HT & price considerations, like you said, there are other alternatives.  :)

I asked for a class B/demo unit from JBL (fair condition), ok na to for me, gna watch drama & pi***ed lang naman w/ this.

I got it way below its orig price but its our agreement w/ the salesperson to keep the price secret.  ;)

But you can buy a new one CASH at around 18k.

A new one would cost around 18+k cash Munskie. They pair it with a HK135 in malls & appliance stores. I used mine with an entry level Onkyo receiver.

Its a bit bright IMO, so best with warm AVR's like Onkyo or HK. I have installed its bigger brother SCS260.6 to a friend's HT and paired it w/ a low model Yamaha in a bare walled room, medyo masakit sa tenga.

IMhO, this is the best performing satellite speaker system for the price & HT application that I have heard/auditioned. And di ka bitin sa bass, good for a HT newbie.

The Castle system is the best sounding for me in both HT & music, but its on a different price level.

Matzer..Firtly am looking for the mini wall mounts (other than bose) but I do have a pretty  big family room. 4 meter wide by 8 meters long.  This is not my HT as I have a big HT in the cellar.  This is a casual set up predominantly for music (80% music 20% HT). The sats will go pretty much near the corners of the room.

I tried to find some reviews on the net but found almost nothing regarding these JBL's.  A shop in park square  had one on hand but it was reserved for some one else so I could not even demo the unit. Was quoted 21,800 cash deal.  Where did you get them for under 20,000?

Do you use them only for HT or also for music?

Do they crank?

Any Problems on loud volumes?

Maybe you give a quick review as you have had these a while now.

Looking forward to your reply.

I am happy with these for HT, they are ok for music, not audiophile quality of course, but good enough for background music. Mid range is not as excellent as bookshelf speakers though.

Crank? yes it can but if you want louder volumes on a room as big as yours, maybe try to get the bigger 260.6 system plus a sufficient amp. I am not sure on how loud you expect it to go, loud background maybe, but not disco loud. The subs are quite sufficient and can play LOUD. Like I said, for the price & compact size, this is a good enough 5.1 system.

The one quoted to you is a 200.6 (6.1) or at 21k, that might be the bigger SCS 260.6 already.

Mine was an older "class B"/ demo unit 200.5 (5.1). They dont have any more of this on stock though, I was just lucky to find one.

made a quick call to the shop where i demoed the jbl 188 and the infinity Beta hcs and asked about the JBL 200.6 and he told me those speakers were not availabale in the philippines.   The shop was at mega mall fifth floor...forget the name.

SM had it for 23,700.  the 200.6 model....5% off for cash.  the demo was OK...not a bad litle set up.

I need a 5.1 or a 7.1.......and that will not be available for 2 or 3 months?????  Or so the main dealer thinks.
