using rear speakers as front
« on: Dec 14, 2006 at 07:45 PM »
here is my setup.

i have a 2 6yrs old pioneer speakers (140w, 12ohms) that i got from our old HTIB and now using it as a front speakers for my newly bought yamaha rx-v457. my centers and surrounds are just 30w 16ohms speakers. im planning to buy a wharfedale wh-2 to replace my center and rears.

if the sound of the wh-2 rear is better than my pioneer front is it okay to use the rears speaker as my front and my pioneer front as my rear instead? will i miss something if i do that? any alternative than the wharf wh-2? my budget will never exceed 5k.

Using surround speakers as fronts is OK, but not ideal.

Unlike true fronts, surround speakers are not designed with a good frequency bandwidth in mind... well, at least this is not their priority because surround channels are rarely called upon to play a full bandwidth.  More often than not, they are designed to be small and inconspicuous first.  You will most likely compromise bass and treble extension, and some power handling.

For a 5k budget, you gan get a bnew pair of Diamond 9.1's, or a 2nd hand pair of speakers.

If you'll use it for music it seems OK especially if you want to hear more vocals.
For movies not good though IMO/IME.
