Speakers to match music types
This may sound funny if not weird but during my early years in audio, I had a pair of DIY dai-ichi speakers which I modified to have seletable tweeter congifuration.- one using a large piezo-electric horn tweeter sitting on top of the speaker box to play instrumentals and the other using the usual dome tweeters I select  for pop, jazz and  bright-sounding LPs.

These days, reading so many reviews about different speakers confirm my suspiciion that certain speaker brands and materials are more suited to sounding certain music genre than others  Like a horn-loaded tweeter/midrange sounding more detailed with wind and brass instrumentals but awful on vocals or operatic arias, while speakers with soft or silk dome tweeter  sounding more airy and sweeter for vocals, etc. but lacking detail in complex orchestral music.  So on and so forth

My musical taste encompass quite a few music genres. so I can't help but think that if I settled for one brand or type of speakers, I couold miss out on the detail or depth or whatever that another brand might bring to a music genre that I listen to.  Is this a valid concern? Are there audiophiles out there that have 2 or more sets of speaker pairs that they select to sound different types of music? Will buying the most expensive speakers solve this "speaker paranoia?"

What is your budget and purpose? Why dont you try getting a good subwoofer instead. You can try Velodyne, HSU, or SVS.

It is a question usually asked by friends. "Gusto ko
ng speaker na me malakas na palo"

I have Mordaunt Short 3.10 and Classic 40.

Using the Classic 40 with a REl Starta III.
Been listening to hip-hop lately, loud volume
levels, now suffering from a temporary hearing
loss.  ;)

Can anybody comment on the Energy e-xl26 floorstanders?  I saw one at upscale at park square retailing at 41k.  I'm interested because a friend is selling a pair for a fraction of the price. Can entry level receivers like sr4300 or hk2550 drive these babies?

jairus: those floorstanders are fairly sensitive so your receiver should be able to drive them, if you can get them at a third of the price get them  :)

3rwin, like what john posted, check out the Logitech Z-680 5.1 speaker system. My friend bought 1 for P18500 and I think its a good deal. It can go real loud. Altecs that I've tried can't compare with this one. The Subwoofer is 185 watts RMS. Total RMS including the satellites is 450watts. has built in dts, DD, Dpl2 decoder. Has optical and coaxial inputs aside from the 6 channel direct connection form your sound card. Also connected it to a dvd player using the coax and played Black Hawk Down and Twister. The sound quality is very good IMHO. You can also use it with an X-box and PS2. Klipsch has the Promedia 5.1 which has 500 RMS rating but costs about P25T and has no decoder. Both are THX certified.

anybody have tried the athena speakers.

made in canada ito at i was quote at 61k kasama ang center nya at pair ng bookshelf speakers and sub.  Forgot the name of the shop pero sa mega mall ito.

any comments :D

i've been on the lookout to upgrade from acoustic energy aegis one for 3yrs now but im not willing to spend too much if the improvement is only minor. supposing i can sell my ae setup for 15k, these are my cost estimates for a 5-speaker upgrade:

mordaunt short ms-900 series....   9k
mission m70 series..................... 10k
monitor audio bronze series....... 18k
b&w 600 series 3........................ 23k
mission 780 series...................... 30k

which would be the best upgrade? doesn't matter if its the most expensive as long as its the most improvement. the aegis speakers have a rolled off top end which kinda removes the "air" out of recordings, but everything else sounds incredible. maybe a supertweeter like a tannoy st-50 is a better upgrade?

IMO go for B&W if budget is not a concern. How about Infinity or Paradigm? Mission and MA are also very good.

Why don't you audition these brands and let your ears decide.  I notice their mostly european and british brands.  There's another interesting euro brand Tannoy.

Have you already shortlisted your choices?  Nothing wrong with those, except that you may want to consider american brands like Polk Audio, Boston Accoustics, Klipsch and AR, just to hear what the other continent has to offer.  I think these are also available at Spectra and Image.

Also check out the reveiws on the net fro these brands.

You said it doesn't matter if its the most expensive so long as it gives the most improvment over your existing set.  Well, you may want to visit Upscale Audio and get to listen to a few brands that can empty your bank account.  Compare that with the brands on your list and see if the yawning price differences justify any sonic differences. Let the ears decide.  Just my 2 cents.
