THE ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION &
THE COMPLETE MATRIX TRILOGY
ARRIVE MAY 22

Just in Time For Father’s Day Gift Givers
The Entire Legendary Matrix Series
in the Splendor of 1080p High Definition Brilliance with More Than 35 Hours of Bonus Features

Burbank, California (March 22, 2007) -- If ever a film series was meant to be seen in HD DVD, that series is now here. The Matrix, the legendary, groundbreaking sci-fi film, and its visually dazzling second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were produced with future technology execution in mind. The Matrix, the first DVD to sell one million copies and to date a $1 billion worldwide franchise, will be part of two new definitive high definition collections to be released by Warner Home Video and Village Roadshow Pictures on May 22.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection, for the hardcore Matrix fan, presents the complete adventures of machine battling truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in all three of the Wachowski brothers’ post-modern epic films. This collection will contain, for the first time, all three HD DVD versions of The Matrix series with more than 35 hours of bonus material in 5 double sided discs. The second offering, The Complete Matrix Trilogy, contains HD DVD versions of the three Matrix films and the three Revisited features in a 3-disc set.

Both The Ultimate Matrix Collection and The Complete Matrix Trilogy come with the In-Movie Experience (IME), an exclusive interactive feature that allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material. For these titles, the IME will let viewers experience the evolution of all The Matrix’s ground breaking elements through the recollections of the cast and creative team.

The Matrix Series on HD-DVD is the definitive and ultimate film compilation for the ultimate hi-def format, plus will no doubt make the ultimate Father’s Day gift for sci-fi film lovers. The Ultimate Matrix Collection will be available for $119.99 SRP and The Complete Matrix Trilogy available for $99.99 SRP. Order due date for all is April 17. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

The Films

The Matrix (1999)

The box-office sensation follows the trials of a young computer programmer (Keanu Reeves) searching to determine the deepest reality of a post-Apocalyptic world. His journey uncovers a web of deceit and massive computer-generated illusions obscuring the truth. As the character Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) said to Neo (Reeves), “No one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.” The same is true for this mind-blowing movie.

The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and was produced by Joel Silver. The Matrix was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, who spent years nurturing and refining the movie’s breakthrough concepts.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

In the powerful second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Moss) and Morpheus (Fishburne) lead the revolt against the Machine Army as it attacks Zion, the last human city on earth, unleashing their arsenal of extraordinary skills and weaponry against the systematic forces of repression and exploitation. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo’s pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

What is The Matrix? The question is not yet fully answered. And it leads to another: Who created The Matrix? The answers lead to more worlds of bold possibility – and to a destiny that passes from revelations to Revolutions.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

In the powerful final chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves) takes another step forward in the quest for truth that began with his journey into the real world at the outset of The Matrix – but that transformation has left him drained of his power, adrift in a no-man’s land between the Matrix and the Machine World. While Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) holds vigil over Neo’s comatose body, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) grapples with the revelation that the One in which he has invested a life’s worth of faith is merely another system of control invented by the architects of the Matrix. During the stunning conclusion, the rebel’s long quest for freedom culminates in an explosive battle. As the Machine Army wages devastation on Zion, its citizens mount an aggressive defense – but can they stave off the relentless swarm of Sentinels long enough for Neo to harness the full extent of his powers and end the war?

Marketing and Promotions Support

WHV will be supporting the release of HD-DVD release of the Matrix collections with national television spots on national cable such as Comedy Central, Spike, Uni HD, G4, and Sci-Fi; in national print publications such as Maxim, Wired, and EW, and on-line sites such as IGN, UGO, IMdB, iFilm, Amazon, Yahoo, Google, and AskMen. Addtionally, in-store merchandisers will be available for national retailers, leveraging other HD-DVD titles during the Father’s Day season.

With operations in 90 international territories, Warner Home Video, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, commands the largest distribution infrastructure in the global video marketplace. Warner Home Video's film library is the largest of any studio, offering top quality new and vintage titles from the repertoires of Warner Bros. Pictures, Turner Entertainment, Castle Rock Entertainment, HBO Home Video and New Line Home Entertainment.

So for an eventual Blu Ray release (if they ever get PiP mandated this century) I suppose five 50gb discs ought to do it with room left for PCM [assuming the HD DVDs have TrueHD as I was informed some months ago they would]

Oh no! Here comes the inevitable... but I don't think I can let go of my Ultimate Collection just because of this, unless the packaging will also have the cabinet-type and Neo-bust...

Anyway, that would be 1 down for me... LOTR, Spidey and HP to go... it's time for me to buy a player... PS3 perhaps in case Blu-ray version will be released soon...

LOTR is from New Line Cinema, a sister company of Warner.  It also supports both formats.

Yeah. But I would base my decision on the overall quality, features & packaging of the HD releases. From what I've read in other forums, people are complaining why the Ultimate Matrix HD-DVD's are in double-sided discs. This is a big inconvenience for me, so I'll wait and see if the HD-DVD or BD version of LOTR will be released as such.

Well, the discussions in another AV forum about this reveals that almost all the HD DVD titles released by Warner is superior to their BD releases.  BD users at this time are actually being shortchanged for not having the interactive PiP features that HD DVD already has from day one.  Same with the audio tracks.  As far as PQ in concerned, both now use VC1 transfers, so that's no longer a problem as before when the first BD releases on BD25 were in the older mpeg2 codec  which can be as good but only on BD50.

Early adopters who have players in both formats enjoy getting the titles they want from studios exclusive to either formats.  But when faced with titles from studios releasing both formats, like Warner and Paramount, the choice is clear - they go HD DVD.  Warner has deliberately delayed releasing the BD version of the Matrix series becasue of the absence of BD-J which is the counterpart of HD DVD's iHD.   But even so, no standalone BD player is cabable of PIP interactivity from a BD-J implementation at the moment, except PS3.  So once this is implemented in BD, they have to upgrade to newer BD players or get a PS3.

And if you're indeed solve on BD, the wait for the interactivity on BD might take a while longer than you think.  The earliest a BD paid geek in another AV forum estimates is a slip in the deadline to autumn for the completion of the BD-J  and testing.  So that easily can translate to a 2008 offering for the BD version of the Matrix.  Then again, if the demand is that great, Warner can just release the BD version without BD-J, just like what they do with their other releases in both formats.

And in terms of packaging, I don't see Warner packaging their HD DVD differently form their BD releases.  So it won't be any different with the Matrix.

Thanks for the info! I must admit that it's only very recently that I've gotten curious over this HD format war, so I don't know much about the technicalities of the issue. I'll keep what you said in mind.  :)

Yes av_phile1 has said it all  ;)

Everthing being equal (PQ, extra, etc) but HD-DVD will offer the awesome SQ in Dolby TrueHD track (another similar example as in Happy Feet) so there's no reason to wait that long for BD if you're a NEUTRAL  ;D

The choice is obvious. Go for it. HD-DVD is indeed the ONE;D

P.S. LOTR will certainly release in HD-DVD....again with Dolby TrueHD but it's in 7.1 channels!!!  :o

Now this one looks different. Just hoping that the packaging would not be like that of Mission Impossible...  :D

I think the complete matrix trilogy is around 69 dollars right, whats the difference. Is it just more special features and animatrix is included in ultimate?
