Lionsgate Brings Unrated 'Van Wilder' to Blu-ray This Summer

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced it will bring the collegiate comedy 'Van Wilder' to Blu-ray this July in a spicy new Unrated version.

Featuring additional footage too hot for theaters, Lionsgate will debut the National Lampoon flick in a feature-laden Blu-ray special edition on August 21.

Among the extensive extras is an "Idiot Kommentary," multiple featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers, an interactive quiz, music video and more.

Tech specs are also impressive, with a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer and no less than a full-blown uncompressed PCM 7.1 surround track (an optional Dolby Digital Surround EX mix will also be included).

Paramount Bumps 'Zodiac' Blu-ray, HD DVD Release Date

Paramount Home Entertainment has confirmed a street date shift for its Blu-ray and HD DVD debuts of 'Zodiac,' bumping the film from its previously scheduled July 24 bow to early fall.

The studio originally announced the David Fincher thriller for a next-gen debut day-and-date with the standard-def DVD on July 24th, but while plans for the DVD remain unchanged, Paramount now says the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions won't hit shelves until September 18.

As Paramount has not yet issued any specs for any of the disc releases of 'Zodiac,' it is too soon to tell whether different specs or features may be included on the high-def editions.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has added two more catalog titles to its ever-expanding next-gen library, bringing 'Notting Hill' and the 2004 remake of 'Dawn of the Dead' to HD DVD late this summer.

Both titles are set to debut on August 28, in full-featured special editions that will mirror the supplements found on their standard-def DVD counterparts. 'Dawn of the Dead' will also appear in its "Unrated Director's Cut" version, featuring nine minutes of additional footage too intense for theaters.

Warner to Rock Blu-ray, HD DVD with 'Purple Rain,' 'Out for Justice'

Warner Home Video has officially announced catalog faves 'Purple Rain' and 'Out for Justice' will both Blu-ray and HD DVD this July.

Though a rather bizarre pairing of rock legend Prince and action-meister Steven Seagal, Warner says both titles will debut on July 24.

The Blu-ray and HD DVD versions of each will feature identical specs and extras, including 1080p/VC-1 transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks (at 640kbps).

Mirroring its standard-def DVD counterpart, 'Out for Justice' will include only the film's theatrical trailer, while 'Purple Rain' will be packed with three retrospective featurettes, eight music videos and classic MTV coverage of the movie's 1984 premiere party.

Universal Bumps 'Breach' HD DVD By a Week

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has confirmed a one-week street date bump for the HD DVD/DVD combo of 'Breach,' which had originally been pegged for release this coming Tuesday.

The studio had scheduled the acclaimed Ryan Phillippe-Chris Cooper thriller for a June 5 HD DVD arrival, and the title seemed to be on track for release until some of our eagle-eyed readers took note that retailers had begun to shift their ship dates by a week.

We contacted Universal for comment, and they confirmed that 'Breach' is now scheduled to streetJune 12. The studio added that specs will remain unchanged, as will the combo disc's $39.98 list price.

'Pirates' Outsells 'Matrix' in Blu-ray, HD DVD Showdown

Last week's sales estimates are in, and in terms of sheer unit sales, Disney's Blu-ray-only release of the first two "Pirates of the Caribbean" flicks handily beat Warner's HD DVD-only release of the two "Matrix" box sets.

According to market research estimates from Home Media Magazine, the two "Pirates" films sold a combined total of a little less than 47,000 units, while the "Matrix" sets sold about 13,900 units.

Since the "Matrix" sets sold at an cost of nearly three times that of the "Pirates" flicks, there's slighly more parity in terms of gross sales, but even there (as Blu-ray supporters have been quick to point out), "Pirates" gets the edge.

In comments first published in The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Chapek, worldwide president of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, called the week's win by "Pirates" a "strong and significant trend toward consumer preference for the Blu-ray Disc format."

"We are thrilled by the critical and industry response to 'Pirates' on Blu-ray disc," Chapek said. "But more importantly, the consumer has spoken loud and clear. This is only the beginning, but it was certainly a significant and explosive indicator of things to come."

Update (6/1/07, 5:27PM ET):
Several readers have written in to complain that comparing sales data for the 'Matrix' box sets to the two individual 'POTC' releases is a case of apples and oranges. They argue that the 'Pirates' Blu-ray discs benefited from a wave of pre-release publicity for the the third film in the series along with some bundled sales incentives at big box retailers, while the Matrix box set was dragged down by the fact that many fans already own the original 'Matrix' on DVD, and had little interest in the second and third installments of the series, making the higher pricepoint for the two boxsets a particularly tough sell.

'Lost' to Make Blu-ray Debut This December

Bringing one of TV's biggest hits to high-def, Disney Home Entertainment has announced it will debut 'Lost: The Complete Third Season' on Blu-ray this December.

According to a rundown by The Hollywood Reporter of new TV-on-DVD releases due in late-2007, the third season of ABC's high-rated 'Lost' will make its next-gen bow on December 11, simultaneous with the standard-def DVD version.

Among the extensive bonus features on the seven-disc set are a documentary chronicling twenty-four hours in the production of the show, a one-on-one interview with star Matthew Fox, a selection of never-before-seen flashbacks, additional behind-the-scenes looks at ten episodes, audio commentaries, deleted scenes, bloopers and more.

No tech specs nor pricing details are yet available for the Blu-ray version of 'Lost: The Complete Third Season,' as Disney has not yet issued any sort of official press release or announcement for the set. We'll certainly keep you posted as soon as further details are confirmed.

Warner to Give 'Cruising' a High-Def Makeover

Continuing their support of revamped director's cuts on home video, Warner premiered a new restored version of William Friedkin's highly controversial 1980 thriller 'Cruising' at last week's Cannes film festival, with an eye to an eventual next-gen release.

Still one of the most notorious films of its era, 'Cruising' generated reams of controversy upon release for its tale of cop Al Pacino descending into the explicit S&M netherworld of gay culture to catch a serial killer. 'Cruising' underwent numerous cuts to achieve an R-rating from the MPAA at the time of its theatrical release (to the point of near-incomprehensibility for many), and ever since has only been available in this botched form. The film also remains, to this day, unreleased on DVD.

But Friedkin debuted a brand-new, studio-restored version of 'Cruising' at Cannes, in a projected HD version from a freshly-minted high-definition master. The 103-minute cut features a never-before-seen opening sequence, more graphic scenes and other footage previously left on the cutting room floor.

'Purple Rain' Gets Dual Blu-ray, HD DVD Dolby TrueHD Release

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that 'Purple Rain' will be Warner's first Blu-ray title to be issued with Dolby TrueHD audio. In fact, the first Warner/TrueHD title was last month's 'Letters from Iwo Jima.' We regret the error.

Audiophiles will be pleased to learn that according to updated specs for the July 24 next-gen release of 'Purple Rain,' the title is the latest in a growing number of cross-format Warner releases to include Dolby TrueHD audio on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Despite Warner Home Video's ongoing format-agnostic approach to the next-gen war, true parity in high-resolution audio specs has been hard to come by on the studio's cross-format releases. Numerous Warner HD DVD titles have enjoyed full-blown Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio, but their Blu-ray counterparts have often suffered by comparison with only standard Dolby tracks.

Recently, the studio had begun to bridge this gap by offering uncompressed PCM audio on the Blu-ray versions of some of its high-profile titles, including the recent top-seller 'The Departed,' and today's debut of 'Blood Diamond.'

But the real holy grail for high-res audiophiles is Dolby TrueHD. Warner finally issued its first TrueHD Blu-ray title last month ('Letters from Iwo Jima'), and today it was revealed that the July 24 debut of 'Purple Rain' will be the second, followed by the cross-format bow for '300,' only a week later.

'Planet Earth' Generates Record HD DVD, Blu-ray Sales Revenue

Proving once again that disc sales can be measured on any number of levels, Warner Home Video has announced that the dual-format release of 'Planet Earth: The Complete Series' is the biggest high-def disc moneymaker yet.

According to figures provided by Warner, which distributed the British series in the U.S. for BBC Video, the box set has generated $3.2 million in consumer spending since its release on Blu-ray and HD DVD on April 24.

The Hollywood Reporter estimates that that number translates to about 42,000 units -- well below the record-breaking 100,000 units sold of 'The Departed,' but at roughly $70 a pop, Warner says the BBC series still tops the high-def charts from a revenue perspective. (The company says 'The Departed' has thus far generated 2.8 million in consumer spending.)

Cue the typically boastful exec quote: "The consumer response to 'Planet Earth: The Complete Series' on both high-definition formats has been absolutely incredible, and we are truly proud to be a part of it," said Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders. "This landmark series was made for high definition, and 'Planet Earth' will be an iconic staple in our natural-history documentary library for a very long time."

The four-disc 'Planet Earth' box set (which famously broke high-def sales records upon its original release at Amazon.com) features the unedited 8+ hour British version of the landmark nature series, narrated by David Attenborough. A recut U.S. version of the series premiered earlier this year on the Discovery Channel, with actress Sigorney Weaver narrating.

Sony Offers "Third Disc Free" Blu-ray Promotion

As part of a unique online promotion, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment this week began offering a "third disc free" deal at participating online retailers, including Amazon.com.

For a limited time, consumers who purchase three Sony Blu-ray discs (from a selection of 34 total discs) will receive the third disc free. While the deal doesn't apply to all Sony Blu-ray discs, several format favorites make an appearance, including 'Casino Royale' and 'Black Hawk Down.'

The deal was first spotted at Amazon.com, but has since been reported at DVD Empire, as well. The lists on both sites are identical, although the selection process is slightly different.

At DVD Empire, consumers must choose their three discs from one of two lists -- one is a collection of discs priced at $20.84, while the other is collection of discs priced at $28.04.

At Amazon, consumers can choose from the entire list of 34 titles, which includes a mix of movies priced at $19.99 and $26.95. If the consumer chooses three discs at $26.95, they will receive a credit of $26.95 at checkout. If they choose three discs at $19.95 or a combination of discs at both price levels, they will receive a credit of $19.95 at checkout.

Only two days old, Sony's Blu-ray promo already seems to be making an impact on Amazon's real-time sales ranks. As of Wednesday night, a whopping eight Blu-ray titles appeared on Amazon's top 100 best selling DVDs list (vs only one title on the HD DVD side).

No word yet on how long this promotion will last

First Multichannel HD DVD Audio Title Debuts with 'Uncommon Bach'

In what is being billed as the world's first "3-Dimensional Sound Reality" high-def music experience, Surround Records will debut the audio-only HD DVD release 'Uncommon Bach' on June 15.

Created by producer Alexander Goldberg Jero, 'Uncommon Bach' presents the music of the legendary composer using "virtual instruments and modern synthesis," in a newly-remixed version that Surround Records is dubbing "3-Dimensional Sound Reality."

According to the company's press materials, the process promises a "clarity and sonic perception of these classical works [that] will open a new vision of the original masterpieces."

'Uncommon Bach' is notable as being the first audio-only high-def release to hit the U.S. Though multichannel audio releases (sans any significant video material) are fairly common on standard-def DVD, they have not yet made any inroads on the HD DVD or Blu-ray formats.

Surround Records has set a June 15 release date for the 57-minute 'Uncommon Bach.'

Tech specs include DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio and standard DTS 5.1 surround options. (Note also that 'Uncommon Bach' is compatible only with HD DVD players with HDMI or optical outputs.)

No further details are available on what, if any video and/or still materials will accompany the audio portion of 'Uncommon Bach.' There also appears to be no additional bonus features or other supplementary material included.

BBC Video Plans 'Galapagos' and ' Room with a View' for Blu-ray, HD DVD

Following the extraordinary success of 'Planet Earth,' BBC Video is apparently planning to bring its next two high-def releases, 'Galapagos' and 'A Room with a View' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this fall.

Defying all projections, 'Planet Earth' has rapidly become not only both the best-selling documentary and box set title on both next-gen formats, but also the top revenue-generating high-def disc release to date.

While future BBC Video releases are not likely scale such sales heights, the company (distributed through Warner Home Video) is certainly off to a great start. And now wisely, as part of the press coverage surrounding the unprecedented success of 'Planet Earth,' the distributor is taking the opportunity to preview their next two next-gen titles.

Though no dates have been set nor any tech specs revealed, according to an article in yesterday's Hollywood Reporter, BBC Video's next high-def releases this fall will be another award-winning documentary, 'Galapagos,' as well as the highly-acclaimed, Oscar-decorated 'A Room with a View.'

Given the high-quality of 'Planet Earth,' we're certainly excited to see what BBC Video has in store next for early adopters. We'll keep you posted as soon as more details on both releases are officially announced.

Disney to 'Remember the Titans' on Blu-ray this September

Walt Disney Home Entertainment has announced it will debut the Denzel Washington hit 'Remember the Titans' on Blu-ray this coming September 4.

Full specs are not yet available for the $100 million-plus grossing smash, although Disney has said it will deliver its usual 1080p transfer and uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround track for 'Titans.'

Among the extras are multiple making-of featurettes and deleted scenes, plus more to be announced when the full press release for 'Titans' is unveiled in the coming days.

This Blu-ray edition is also expected to include the 133-minute "Director's Cut' version of the film, which first saw release on standard-def DVD in October of 2006.

Retail price is set at a $34.95 MSRP.

'Remember the Titans' joins an ever-growing number of other similar-themed inspirational sports dramas that have already debuted on Blu-ray from Disney, including 'Invincible,' 'Glory Road' and 'Goal! The Dream Begins.'

Warner to Serve Up 'Deliverance' on Blu-ray, HD DVD This September

Warner Home Video has announced the latest addition to its next-gen library of classic catalog remasters with the September 18 HD DVD and Blu-ray debut of 'Deliverance.'

The John Boorman action-adventure was one of 1973's biggest hits, earning strong box office, critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations. Starring Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds as city dwellers who make a risky (and terror-inducing) rafting trip into the backwoods, the film remains as famous as it is infamous, forever etching the phrase "squeal like a pig!" into the cultural vocabulary.

Warner has remastered the film in a new 1080p master for Blu-ray and HD DVD release, and also plans to offer up new Dolby 5.1 surround remixes (640kbps).

Extras will include a new audio commentary with Boorman, a four-part retrospective documentary, plus a vintage featurette and the film's theatrical trailer.

Toshiba lowers sales target for HD DVD players

Washington, D.C. (June 12, 2007) -- Toshiba today lowered the sales forecast on its High-Definition DVD players. That's according to an article from Reuters.

Toshiba says it will now sell about one million HD DVD players in North America by year's end, which is 44 percent less than its previous estimate of 1.8 million.

The revised forecast comes a day after Toshiba issued a press release saying its HD DVD players are outselling rival Blu-ray. The company said that 60 percent of all high-def DVD players sold are HD DVD players.

Toshiba, the leading backer of the HD DVD  format,  says 150,000 HD DVD players have been sold to date. But the company is not including sales of Sony's PlayStation 3, which has a Blu-ray player inside. Sony says more than one million PS3 consoles have been sold.

Toshiba also said Tuesday that worldwide sales of HD DVD players will not meet earlier expectations this year.
"Obviously we are going to have to lower our previous global estimate," Toshiba's Yoshihide Fujii told reporters on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The company previously estimated that it would sell three million HD DVD players and recorders worldwide in the current fiscal year.

Sony May Increase U.S. Shipments of Blu-Ray by Sixfold in 2007

Washington, D.C. (June 12, 2007) -- Sony said yesterday that it might increase shipments of Blu-ray players in the U.S. by 600 percent this year.

That's according to an article from Bloomberg News.

The news service reports that Sony believes that Blu-ray sales will rise dramatically this year due to the exclusive release of several blockbuster films on the high-def DVD format.

Blu-ray and rival HD DVD, which is backed by Toshiba, are battling for the new high-def DVD audience. But four of the eight major film studios are backing Blu-ray exclusively with only one (Universal) supporting HD DVD exclusively.

Sony shipped less than 100,000 Blu-ray players in the U.S. last year, but could ship up to 600,000 in 2007, according to Randy Waynick, a company senior vice president.
`"You'll see growth in multiples of five or six times," Waynick said, according to Bloomberg.

He said actual shipments will depend on how competitive Blu-ray becomes. But Waynick added that the upcoming release of several blockbuster films on Blu-ray should drive sales. He said 14 or 15 of the top 20 films this year will be Blu-ray exclusives.

"The movies are very compelling," Waynick said, according to Bloomberg.

'Top Gun,' 'Jack Ryan Collection' Lead Paramount Fall Blu-ray, HD DVD Action Wave

Injecting another shot of testosterone into the high-def format war, Paramount Home Entertainment will release the catalog classics 'Top Gun' and 'The Jack Ryan Collection' on Blu-ray and HD DVD this fall.

Bringing five of their most requested action titles to high-def, Paramount will rev up their fall next-gen schedule with two major releases.

Hitting stores first on September 25 is the four-title 'Jack Ryan Collection.' The box set will include all of the Tom Clancy-inspired blockbusters to feature the Jack Ryan character, including 'The Hunt for Red October,' 'Patriot Games,' 'Clear and Present Danger' and 'The Sum of All Fears.'

That release will be followed on October 2 by the Tom Cruise mega-hit, 'Top Gun.'

Paramount has not yet announced specs nor supplement information for either of the action releases, though further details are expected shortly.

List price will be $29.95 for 'Top Gun,' and $99.95 for the 'Jack Ryan Collection.'

Note that similar to the Paramount's hit 'Ultimate Missions Collection' released late last year, the studio is not yet announcing any stand-alone editions of the Jack Ryan films. However, if the studio's history with 'Ultimate Missions' is any indication, each of the Jack Ryan titles seem likely to be made available individually at a future date.

Paramount's 'Disturbia' Brewing on HD DVD, Blu-ray This Summer

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced it will bring the sleeper hit 'Disturbia' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this August.

A loose teen remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic 'Rear Window,' 'Disturbia' stars current "It" boy (and future young Indiana Jones) Shia LeBouf. The film surprised industry observers when it topped the spring box office for three consecutive weeks, and has currently grossed over $80 million at the domestic box office.

Paramount has not yet announced specs for the title, but it will debut the sleeper on Blu-ray and HD DVD simultaneous with the standard-def DVD. The street date has been set for August 7. 2007.

Amazon Drops Prices on Select Blu-ray, HD DVD Discs to 42 Percent Off List

High-def disc fans are getting another pricebreak this week from Amazon.com, with the retailer dropping the price of at least 40 discs up to 42% below retail.

Unlike last week's "third disc free" Sony-only promo, this latest deal includes discs from a number of studios across both formats, including Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, and The Weinstein Co.

To me both are disappointing figures. Both have top notch PQ, and the sound for pirates is said to be top notch. Also Reviews are excellent to promote these movies in advance and they can come out with these figures.  :'(

Yup 1.8 million for a target is crazy in the first place.

New Disc Bundle Offered For Xbox 360 HD DVD Add-On

The latest in a seemingly endless parade of discounts and promos for HD DVD and Blu-ray over the past few weeks, both Best Buy and Circuit City are offering a new free disc bundle with purchase of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-on.

Now through June 16th, consumers who buy Microsoft's add-on player at either big box retailer will receive not only the free 'King Kong' HD DVD (which has long come bundled with the player), but also an additional two free HD DVD discs.

The two deals seem to differ slightly in terms of the two additional free HD DVDs: while Circuit City is allowing consumers to choose any two HD DVDs up to a $59.98 value, it appears that Best Buy has pre-selected 'The Bourne Supremacy' and 'Breach' as their two additional discs, at least for online sales.

Both retailers are selling the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on for its list price of $199.99.

This bundle deal is the latest in a series of price cuts and promotions to hit HD DVD and Blu-ray in the weeks leading up to Father's Day. On the hardware side, Toshiba and Sony have both dropped prices for their respective next-gen disc players, with Sony launching its BDP-S300 Blu-ray player at a record-low $499, and Toshiba offering a limited time $100 rebate program for its line of HD DVD players. On the software side, price cuts on high-def discs have been spotted at various retailers, including (most recently) Amazon.com, which is offering up to 42% off list price for a selection of HD DVD and Blu-ray titles.

Warner Introduces First High-Def "Best Of" Collections for Blu-ray, HD DVD

In a high-def first, Warner Home Video is planning to release three new "Best Of" collections bundling over a dozen of its top Blu-ray and HD DVD releases.

On September 18, the studio will release three separate volumes on both formats, containing four top titles apiece.

"The Best of Blu-ray Vol. 1" and "The Best of HD DVD Vol. 1" will include: 'Lethal Weapon,' 'The Road Warrior,' 'Swordfish' and 'Training Day.'

"The Best of Blu-ray Vol. 2' and 'The Best of HD DVD Vol. 2" will include: 'The Last Samurai,' 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'Unforgiven.' Note that the fourth title in the Blu-ray set is 'The Fugitive,' while the HD DVD box includes 'Troy,' instead.

"The Best of Blu-ray Vol. 3' and 'The Best of HD DVD Vol. 3' include: 'Blazing Saddles,' 'The Departed,' 'Goodfellas' and 'Superman: The Movie.'

Each box will carry an MSRP of $84.99 on both formats, a savings of up to $55 compared to the combined list prices of each title, if bought separately. (Amazon is already taking pre-orders for all six box sets at $58.95)

Note that none of the box sets include any additional bonus features or different specs from those on the stand-alone releases. Box art for each individual title as also remains the same.

Paramount Bumps 'Face/Off' Blu-ray, HD DVD; 2-Disc Special Edition Now Expected

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced a new street date for the Blu-ray and HD DVD debut of 'Face/Off,' and has revealed an apparent expansion of its specs.

The hit action-thriller, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage as enemies who "body switch" in a game of hi-tech cat-and-mouse, was originally announced for high-def release on August 28th.

Paramount has now bumped the release of both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions back until September 11.

While full specs have yet to be released, Paramount has sent along the box art for both next-gen editions, which indicates a two-disc special edition for each. So we can likely look forward to plenty of fresh bonus features to highlight the release.

Retail price remains $29.95 for both versions.
