Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection
Release date: Oct. 2, 2012

Dracula

Dracula, the first of Universal's Big Three Horror Icon pictures (the other two being Frankenstein and The Wolf Man, kicks off the Universal Classic Monsters: Essential Collection in style. The film still delivers, its meticulous restoration and faithful video transfers are the highlight of the disc, its DTS-HD Master Audio Mono mix is almost as impressive, and its supplemental package is light on tricks and heavy on treats.

Frankenstein

Frankenstein's restoration isn't as striking as Dracula's (or as extensive I suspect), but it's no less commendable. Everything from contrast inconsistencies to grain spikes, print flicker and fluctuations, scratches and specks (which rarely make an appearance), and other inherited issues have been managed with care, without undermining the detail of the original photography, thwarting the filmmakers' intentions, or robbing the image of its filmic qualities. There isn't any evidence of quick-fix manipulation or debilitating noise reduction, and the relative softness and darkness of Arthur Edeson's photography are the only things that might give the untrained eye pause, particularly if direct comparisons are being made to other films in the Essentials Collection. Black levels are deep and ominous (even if gray tones are a tad heavy on occasion), edges are clean and satisfying (just not razor sharp), and textures, where apparent, have been preserved. The encode itself is proficient as well, without any serious macroblocking, banding, smearing or errant oddities that might inspire videophiles to arm themselves with torches and pitchforks.

The Mummy

Yes, the grain here is faint and largely unobtrusive, and yes, print damage and blemishes are almost non-existent. But fine detail flourishes (as in the creases and wrinkles in Karloff's monster makeup), edges are pleasing and almost always clean (with only a handful of halos to point to), and contrast and delineation are dead on. Black levels? Beautifully dark. Midtones? Lovely. The experience? Near perfect. There is some residual print flickering, but only a hint. I spotted a few instances of soupy surges of grain as well, but like every imperfection I encountered, it appears to be derived from the source elements. (And minimized most effectively, again without endangering filmmaker's intention.) I can't imagine The Mummy looking any better than it does here.

Fortunately almost all the top releases will be available to buy in the UK so I should have them on release day rather than 4-8 weeks later like it was when I was living in Cebu. Getting The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man and Total Recall Blu-ray SteelBooks for less than 1000PhP each and will be picking them up in store.

Dredd (2012)
Release date: Jan. 8, 2013

Blu-ray review:

1. Picture --- 3D:9/10; 2D: 6/10
2. Sound --- 9/10 (Reference Quality)

First time I've seen a reviewer say the 2D is much worse than the 3D.
