I agree with your assessment of mike de leon's films. I think he's brilliant.

Actually I'm waiting for confirmation about a rumor that de leon released some films of his on DVD. My contact is my wife's friend whho is a relative of Mike de leon. Hopefully, it is true and, also hopefully, he can get me copies.  :)

bilangin ang bituin sa langit with nora aunor on Feb 5 @2am, Feb 8 @5am, Feb 18 @ 2am.

I don't remember this one.  Who directed?

Noel, Bilangin ang Bituin sa Langit was directed by Elwood Perez. It stars Nora Aunor, Tirso Cruz III, Gloria Romero, and Miguel Rodriguez. An award winning movie from Guy & Pip but also very commercial. It was Regal Films' 16th Anniversary presentation in 1989 and I think Nora's last movie at Regal Films. May feud ba si Nora at Mother Lily kaya hindi na ito nabibigyan ng project?

"May feud ba si Nora at Mother Lily kaya hindi na ito nabibigyan ng project?"

Could be.  Know the Regal Studios on Valencia Street, San Juan?  Used to be Nora's.  Nora insulted Mother somehow and Mother swore she'd buy that house away from her. She did.

Then again, it could be Nora was going through a bad period.  Things like that happen in the industry all the time...

maynila, sa kuko... will be shown this month, Feb 6 @2pm & Feb 17 @2am.

Great film

Vilma Santos films
anak on Feb 28 @7pm.

Fugheddaboudit

bata bata paano ka ginawa? on Feb 27 @7pm.

Overrated, I thought.

relasyon on Feb 7 @3:45am, Feb 25 @ 7pm.

Very good, one of Ricky Lee's best scripts.  I even know who's story it is...and it isn't a woman  ;D

sana maulit muli with aga muhlach on Feb 11 @9pm, Feb 15 @ 3:15pm, Feb 19 @ 12nn, Feb 21 @ 2am.

Fugheddaboudit

bilangin ang bituin sa langit with nora aunor on Feb 5 @2am, Feb 8 @5am, Feb 18 @ 2am.

I don't remember this one.  Who directed?

dahas with maricel soriano on Feb 6 @3:45am, Feb 12 @ 7pm, Feb 23 @4pm.

Fugheddaboudit

fatima buen story with kris aquino today @4pm, Feb 7 @7:15am, Feb 16 @ 12nn.

Excellent direction by Mario O'Hara, gothic fantasy, great supporting roles by Gina Pareno, Janice de Belen, even Zoren Legaspi (?!) is great.

The joker in the pack is Kris Aquino.  You can look at her two ways: this is the performance of her career, or, hotholydarn, even MARIO O'HARA can't make her act!!!  :o

hubog today @9am.

Fugheddaboudit.

hihintayin kita sa langit on Feb 5 @ 12nn, Feb 9 @6pm.

Kitschy, not too bad ripoff of Wuthering Heights.  One question: Richard Gomez as HEATHCLIFF???!!!  :o

karnal with philip salvador on Feb 5 @9pm, Feb 13 @ 9am, Feb 22 @ 1am.

Thought it was pretentious twaddle.  People love it, tho.

kisapmata with vic silayan on Feb 6 @ 9am.

GREAT film.  Even over Maynila sa Kuko, I think.

may minamahal with aga muhlach on Feb 9 @ 2pm, Feb 24 @4pm.

Put me to sleep.

milagros with sharmaine arnaiz on Feb 26 @ 9pm.

Has its fans, but I thought it was pretentious.

moral with lorna tolentino on Feb 12 @ 9pm, Feb 20 @9am.

Best Ricky Lee film.  Good comedy (not being sarcastic--it's really intentionally very funny, tho not a lot of people remember this).

My two cents .. not that anybody cared.

Maynila - -  > a must ..
Relasyon - - > good one
Karnal - - >  i like it, must be because of the story
Kisapmata - -  > just the best
Moral - - - > well acted movie i thought

Took note of them, Noel. Thanks! Like what I told rse, I will post the films I'm thinking of seeing in a month based on the Guide sked and we hope you'd comment on them. At least, we avoid the hassle of making time for something that's unworthwhile.

Amores Perros Mar 30, 8pm

Superior to Tarantino, worthwhile.

Ang Bagong Bayani: The Flor Contemplacion Story Mar 26, 4pm

Tikoy's best work, I think, it looks and is structured like no other Filipino film I know.

Babae sa Bubungang Lata Mar 17, 4pm; 22, 5am

The second best film of the '90s, and a wonderful closing elegy to the local film industry.

Babae Mar 8, 9am; 13, 2pm; 24, 7:15am

Has a worthwhile performance by Nora Aunor, her best in years.  Also has Juday, but Aunor's good enough to overcome that...

Dahil Mahal Kita: The Dolzura Cortez Story Mar 24, 9pm; 29, 3:15pm

One of the better AIDs movies, one of Vilma's better roles, and a pretty good (not her best) effort by Laurice Guillen.

Kakabakaba Ka Ba? Mar 18, 9pm

Mike de Leon's comedy.  Worthwhile.

Moral Mar 8, 1:15pm

One of Ricky Lee's best efforts.

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang Mar 3, 9pm; 11, 9am; 16, 10pm; 29, 1am

Great film, one of the best by Brocka, written by Mario O'Hara WITH a great performance by Lolita Rodriguez and Mario O'Hara.

Tuhog Mar 31, 9pm

Pretty good film, Jeutrian and Bing Lao.

if they're showing it on Cinema One, it might be dubbed in Filipino like what they did to Malena. for those who have seen the dubbed version, was it ok?

Was wondering if we missed a title or two, looked over the cable guide, found these:

Halik ng Sirena March 20, 9 pm

Could be the Erik Matti flick.  Young Critic's Circle recommends it; who knows it might actually be worthwhile (but remember Vampira...!)

Mga Bilanggong Birhen March 20, 11 pm

Watch this.  Written by and ALMOST directed by Mario O'Hara.  He shot about 90% of the film, then reportedly walked out when the producer started on him.  A lesser director--name slips the mind at the moment--took over.  By way of protest, Lino Brocka had his scenes as a cultist priest taken out; he was replaced by Johnny Delgado.

The editing doesn't have the O'Hara touch, and you miss it badly.  But the camerawork, the performances, the overall film despite this is breathtaking.  Nick Deocampo noted that O'Hara wasn't much older than Raymond Red when both made their first period films--Raymond with Bayani, O'Hara with this--but look at both, and you can see who had the more epic, more complex, and ultimately more moving vision.

Oh, and Alma Moreno actually gives a good performance (this is Cinema One, so you won't see her nude scenes with Johnny Delgado in a cult ritual, unfortunately).  And Armida Siugion Reyna is incredible--wonderful performance.  And she glows.  She's never been more beautiful than in this film.  I'd say WHY, but I do want to stay alive... ;D

That was CARLO AQUINO and Dina Bonnevie  :)

I'm no fan of dubbed movies but the dubbing of Malena was not that bad, for some reason it actually worked well with the movie. Maybe because the mood is very similar to Filipino sentiments. I think Dina Bonnevie and Carlo Aquino were perfect for the roles that they were dubbing. And the Filipino dialogues weren't that contrived thanks to Ricky Lee's fresh approach to the script.

Three more showings, I think.  Check upthread.

On Malena:

It probably also helps (tho I'm guessing this) that a good portion of Italian films are already dubbed, or don't use original sound recording...

I remember liking it because of Baby Delgado. I forgot if that was really her name ... but I think she had a miscarriage in the film. Can't recall now if she was Philip Salvador or Christopher de Leon's wife. Anyway, it was one of the 80s Brocka movies that I  like.

Amores Perros Apr 4, 6.30pm

Better than Tarantino, but doesn't transcend him.

Anak Apr 22, 4.30pm

Um...I don't know...

Ang Tatay Kong Nanay Apr 9, 7.45am; 12, 12.30pm; 16, 6.30pm

One of Dolphy's best performances (another would be Facifica Falayfay).

Atsay Apr 4, 4.30pm; 13, 2.30pm; 28, 9.30am

Um...I don't know again...

Batch '81 Apr 23, 8pm

Mike de Leon...a must see...

Bayarang Puso Apr 6, 6.30pm; 16, 4.30pm

Yuk.

Himala Apr 18, 2.30pm; 24, 6am

One of Bernal's most visual films...and prophetic--the town prefigures the lahar landscape of Pinatubo...

Itim Apr 18, 11.30pm; 27, 7.30am

Masterful gothic exercise...a first draft for Kisapmata...

Mila Apr 6, 9.30am; 21, 9.30pm; 29, 9.30am

Yicks.

Pila Balde Apr 22, 11.30pm

Jeffrey's best and I'd say Bing Lao's best after Takaw Tukso.

Shake Rattle and Roll 1 Apr 11, 9.30am; 13, 7.30am; 26, 4.30am

Frigyider by Bernal is my favorite...perverse horror comedy about a killer fridge...

Sisa Apr 17, 11.30pm

I think it's a great film, the greatest in the '90s; not a lot of people agree (though Kidlat Tahimik and Nonoy Lauzon of Young Critics Circle do).  I don't blame em, but still...

Tuhog Apr 8, 9.30am

Pretty good, tho there are some flaws in the premise and the film doesn't go far enough.  First time Ina Raymundo gives a good performance, and she's fantastic.  Great performance, however, by Irma Adlawan as Ina's mom...

Wating Apr 5, 8.45am; 11, 2.30pm

Disappointing last film by Ishmael Bernal.  You wonder if he was high when he shot this...

A few missed out:

Perfumed Garden, April 10 at 11.30 pm.

Not Celso Ad. Castillo at his best, but still some striking images and edited sequences and I think a terrific performance from Michael de Mesa...

Bomba Star, April 11 at 11.30 pm.

Joey Gosengfiao gives Alma Moreno the star treatment.  Great camp; funny performances from everyone, even Eddie Guttierrez as a gay macho.

Johnny Tinoso and the Proud Beauty, April 17 at 12 pm; April 21 at 7.45 am.

Flawed film, full of production shortages (the special effects are embarrassing) about a monstrous beast named Johnny (Jestoni Alarcon) and an arrogant beauty (Gretchen Baretto).  Overall, Nick Joaquin hated this adaptation.

But Johnny is cured of his curse in the middle and not at the end of the film...and what follows is an interesting variant of the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.  Gretchen is a wittier, bitsier beauty than the rather tepid creature in the Disney version.  The ending I think is lovely.

La Vida Rosa, April 24 at 9.30 am

One of Chito Rono's best, thanks to a noirish script by Amado Lao

Misteryo sa Tuwa, April 25, 9 am

One of the ECP films, a fable like story about a few men who discover a suitcasefull of money in a plane crash.  Prefigures A Simple Plan by decades.  Quite good.

I think they'll be showing Malena again this April.
