I have just watched this film again and I would like to give kudos to Dolphy for his excellent portrayal as the cross dressing Dioscoro "Coring" Derecho. The first time you'll see Dolphy on the screen, you will sense that the characterization is afar from the Facifica Falayfay and Fefita Fofongay roles he had essayed before. In fact, I only saw Coring in the movie and not Dolphy.

I'm still wondering how Christopher De Leon has won over Dolphy in the 1978 URIAN awards for best actor since Dolphy's role is better written. Also, Dolphy was able to superbly display all the gamut of available emotions in this film from longing, anger, patience, hurt, love, pain, etc. This is a very rare occasion we see Dolphy at his best. Thanks to Lino Brocka's masterly guidance.

Agree the comedy king's greatest performance on celluloid. Much much better than OMENG SATANASIA. I doubt if anyone could surpass the characterization that he portrayed as Dioscoro Coring Derecho. Best scene.....his monologue at the end of the film.

the best scene for me was when Coring finally saw Dennis (Phillip Salvador) after several years... you can see the longing in his face...

The film is also filled with several funny moments especially when Dolphy's gay friends are in a taxi and the photo of Philip was thrown outside. Also when Dolphy meets Rene Salud in the house of Marissa Delgado.

i also love the scene where Dolphy told Rudy Soriano to act masculine in front of Nino which resulted to the latter quitting his job at the beauty parlor...

What I remember was that the pathos made the comic moments sharper (a la Chaplin) and the comedy kept the melodramatic moments more honest. I wish they had worked more, those two.

Great timing of the thread since Mark Meily is doing an update of the classic Brocka film wherein he picks Michael V as the new Dolphy.

Mark Meily on ANG TATAY KONG NANAY:

"I watched it at the Luneta Theatre when I was 11. It was my first exposure to Brocka. I was too young to appreciate MAYNILA SA MGA KUKO NG LIWANAG or TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG. I will never forget how Lino treated the separation scene between Dolphy and Nino. You had to be dead not to cry."

Its not really remake. Sort of homage and updated version of Brocka's film. I don't know how will Michael V attack the role but Mark promised to give more of the human side of the gay character not the typical faggot that Dolphy personified in the original version. But Dolphy's performance is a tough act to follow!

Michael V should do his homework now!

i loved Mark Meilly's first two films but update a classic? is he trying to imitate Gus Van Sant? hope not... Dolphy's performance in the film is his best ever! unlike the caricatures he played in Facifica Falayafay and Fefita Fofonggay, Brocka made Dioscoro Derecho more human and that's what made the character endearing...

Ok here are the changes for the updated version. Instead of a boy, the child is now a girl to be played by Erika Oreta from Inang Yaya. Michael V now works in a department store instead of a beauty salon and Mark will inject more about parenthood, gender is not an issue whether you are single or married. The big question is how will Meily inject the sensibilities that Brocka did in the original version because Mark is a straight filmmaker.

the Manunuri's did favor Bernal over Brocka... the former was named Best Director in 1977 for Dalawang Pugad, Isang Ibon then the following year Christopher de Leon took home the Best Actor Award for Ikaw Ay Akin which was also directed by Bernal. they much preferred de Leon's understated performance as Rex, a man torned between two women than Dolphy's more showy performance in Ang Tatay Kong Nanay...

Boyet wasn't even nominated for Tatlong Taong; he was nominated for Ganito (a film I didn't much like as a film, but the script was good and I have to admit he was good there). He rates his performance in Tatlong Taong very poorly.

That said I like him there, or at least I like his character as written there. He's the man caught in between, neither fully Japanese or Filipino. He has to make his own way through life. Given he's committed the crime of rape, he decides to follow through on the consequences of his actions (love the woman he wronged, and the child he created); given that he has a rebel in his house, he betrays his Japanese superiors and gives the man comfort and medical care.

At the same time, he has a temper, he's arrogant (Boyet is perfect at arrogance) and in the right circumstance he acts like an animal (warped with a cruelty only humans can achieve). I think it's a clearheaded view of a complex character.

I was surprised that Boyet even won for GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON. It looks dated to me everytime I see it on Cinema One. He was even impressive in TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS.

I can't tell if the production design is very good. It's crummily lit and shot, and the colors are wretchedly presented.
