I guess VirraMall in Greenhills would be the best place to look for HDMI cables, mag canvass ka lang muna

Other notable differences...

- Tray loading
- Resume function now included.
- Individual RCA audio output for powered speakers (yung pang PC).

What I didn't like was that the microphone volume knob (for karaoke) is now at the side instead of the front panel.

my concern was the "insertability" of a mini disk...
dont want to risk inserting a mini in a slide in  loading...
kayi upgraded to tray loading.

Saw this unit on sale at SM mega appliance center, P4990 until dec. 31.  Those wanting to buy, this could be the best time to buy.

1.) Does it upscale via Component?
2.) what comes with the package? HDMI cable included?
3.) is it a region free player?
4.) Hows its PQ and SQ compared to pio 696,400,600..etc..
5.) May firmware ba 'to for upgrades?
6.) Mabenta ba ang unit na 'to?hehehe ;D

The problem with this is that it doesn't play SACD.  Pioneer 600 does.

The problem with this is that it doesn't play SACD.  Pioneer 600 does.

most people would use the digital out to the receiver anyway; and besides, the Pioneer doesn't convert DSD to analog signals: it converts it to PCM, then converts it to DSD. its the BurrBrown dac that makes it sound good, not the SACD or the benefits of DSD processing on regular PCM recordings.

the philips salesman at the sm appliance store showed it to me and got the same instruction steps at avforum. region all na setting ko.

Thank you sir.

The unit is still wrap in Christmas wrapping and i just took a quick peek at it & found out the gift was a Philip DVD player. Will probably open it up after Christmas and how I wish I have a 42" plasma to test the unit.

philips dvp5986k 24hour ownership review
I was at Sm Southmall Appliance Center and picked this unit for 4990 mainly due to the positive reviews in Newegg of the US version (DVP5980) in terms of accepting DVD media. Which to me was imp't since I have home made DVD's. Played any DVD-/+R's effortlessly (Philips, Sony, Verbatim, BenQ, even the 50php CDR King dual layer dvd). Was also able to play Jack Sparrow  ;) edition DVD's from your suking tindahan.

It comes with remote w/batteries, rca cable and the power cord (i like how the power cord is detachable). Had to go up to cdr king to buy an hdmi cable for it. The unit was already multi region when I got it (tested with my R1 and R3 original dvd's). It only upscales through the HDMI ( 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p - couldn't test this one out since my Pana 32LE7 doesn't support it, and curiously, AUTO).

DivX playback is great. Plays with subtitles but not really white, usually in grey font with a semi translucent border frame. The upscaling feature is more prominent with DivX files than with DVD's. Also it will only display around 6 characters of your file name, so playing files from an enclosure (which you have to plug in its own power source) may be difficult if you didn't name them in order. It lets you scroll too up to 32x even with DivX files.

With DVD's, I noticed the black bars we're thinner than what displayed before with my Nextbase DVP818 whether 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 dvd's. There we're some DVD's that you could really notice the difference with 480p, 720p and 1080i. I just finished dl'ing a DVD Video Essentials and will try advanced configurations on my player and TV later to see as to what improvements, if any, its upscaling has.

The menu is a little tricky and probably the units' biggest downfall. The remote also isn't very well layed out, I believe they designed it foremost to be small rather than be user friendly. However browsing through the manual and a few hours using it you'll be able to master the remote.

If you want a relatively cheap DVD player you can hook up through HDMI that isn't picky with DVD media and will play DivX files then this will do the trick. As for its' upscaling with DVD's, I was quite happy with my NB DVP818's playback on my Pana 32LE7 via s-video already, the only really discernible difference was the thinner black bars. However on DivX playback, the upscaling was more prevalent.

Housebum,

Thanks for the very informative review of the Phillips dvp5986k upscaler.
I saw this unit in Anson's Libis and was eyeing it for several days now.
The only thing stopping me was the lack of feedback from those who have already used this player.
My other purpose really for this player, asides from playing DVDs, is really plugging in my 300GB HD enclosure thru USB where I have stashed quite number of downloaded DivX movie files since last year.
Did you encounter any significant problems plugging in your HD enclosure? Are you using FAT32 or NTFS?
I read several feedbacks regarding the limitations of the USB port on these DVD players where it could not read files on HD enclosures but only on USB memory sticks.
Did the Phillips dvp5986k upscaler finally solved this problem?
Any feedback on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alehoy

According to the manual, it only recognizes FAT16 and FAT32 (sector size 2k bytes) file systems. As for compatible USB mass storage device, it only supports Flash memory drives and Flash players and memory cards via a card reader.

Does this have the DD and DTS built in decoders thru 5.1 RCA outputs?
