The user manual states that you may connect the device to a multi channel receiver (front L&R, rear L&R, center & subwoofer ports)  with a Dolby Digital Decoder (does this answer your query, sorry not very audio proficient).Though the player has both Dolby Digital and DTS logos represented on its physical body, the manual, and to an extent my knowledge about the player, is quite ambiguous as to the extent of the player's capabilities regarding either.

Does this have the DD and DTS built in decoders thru 5.1 RCA outputs?

Yes, this model has built in DD and DTS decoders and can output both thru the 5.1 analog RCA output jacks.

1.  does anyone know how to max upscaling of this player to 1080p?  player provides in menu but does not accept?
2.  progressive mode is not also activated, can this be upgraded?

maybe your display (lcd tv or plasma) is not capable of outputting 1080p signal.

Mga sir, don't despair, I dont see any difference between a setting of 720P and setting it at 1080P (lalo na playing pdvd) even between 480P and 780P. If there are any di ko makita. Sa 32" ba may nakita kayong difference?

actually sir sfcc tama ka diyan, however with the price that we bought the 32s of sammy last december e presyo na nang 40s ngayon that are capable of 1080p lalo na yung pocket friendly na panny.  kakahinayang, had i known pdvd earlier .... hay buhay, talagang lagi sa huli ang pagsisisi.  mabuti na lang at may forum na ganito... gets you educated and makes your risks extra calculated.

^^^ ... ako i bought my lcd dec06. 2 weeks before the price dropped by 10k. i got a good deal as my friend own ansons, but srp wise the samsung 32s71 still cost 69,999 then!!! 5000:1 contrast ratio and 1 hdmi input lang.... kaya nga ngayon id much rather put it sa CR ko kaysa ibenta for an upgrade.

Ang sabi po nila, the only way you will notice a difference between a 720p and 1080p settings is if you have a screen size of 40" and above. If you have a screen below 40" di daw ito makikita masyado.

I agree, but not that much with an upscaler using a standard dvd disc as source.

Ang malaking difference is using a HDdvd or blu ray player and play it with HD or blue ray disk sa mga full HD na TV.

tama kayo mga sirs not much diff in upscaling in 32".  ang masakit e ang presyo ng 32" namin ay presyo na ng 40 inchers na ngayon na capable of 1080p.  huhuhu...

How does this model compare with Pioneer in terms of playback reliability?

I'm not worried about picture quality, since Philips also uses a good Mediatek DAC.

What I'm looking for is a player that is the least picky when playing DVD discs.  My Pioneer 490 has a slight hiccup on the 2-disc Bram Stoker's Dracula (U.S. R1).

Easy lang mag regionless sa Philips -- just enter a code on the remote.  That's why it's OK even if they're region-locked out of the box.

It's harder on newer Pioneers -- you will need a laptop.  That's why they should be region-free out of the box.

==================================

Philips dvp5986k has jacket_p support.  It's a minor feature, but it's nice to have.
