I was at Sm Southmall Appliance Center and picked this unit for 4990 mainly due to the positive reviews in Newegg of the US version (DVP5980) in terms of accepting DVD media. Which to me was imp't since I have home made DVD's. Played any DVD-/+R's effortlessly (Philips, Sony, Verbatim, BenQ, even the 50php CDR King dual layer dvd). Was also able to play Jack Sparrow
edition DVD's from your suking tindahan.
It comes with remote w/batteries, rca cable and the power cord (i like how the power cord is detachable). Had to go up to cdr king to buy an hdmi cable for it. The unit was already multi region when I got it (tested with my R1 and R3 original dvd's). It only upscales through the HDMI ( 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p - couldn't test this one out since my Pana 32LE7 doesn't support it, and curiously, AUTO).
DivX playback is great. Plays with subtitles but not really white, usually in grey font with a semi translucent border frame. The upscaling feature is more prominent with DivX files than with DVD's. Also it will only display around 6 characters of your file name, so playing files from an enclosure (which you have to plug in its own power source) may be difficult if you didn't name them in order. It lets you scroll too up to 32x even with DivX files.
With DVD's, I noticed the black bars we're thinner than what displayed before with my Nextbase DVP818 whether 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 dvd's. There we're some DVD's that you could really notice the difference with 480p, 720p and 1080i. I just finished dl'ing a DVD Video Essentials and will try advanced configurations on my player and TV later to see as to what improvements, if any, its upscaling has.
The menu is a little tricky and probably the units' biggest downfall. The remote also isn't very well layed out, I believe they designed it foremost to be small rather than be user friendly. However browsing through the manual and a few hours using it you'll be able to master the remote.
If you want a relatively cheap DVD player you can hook up through HDMI that isn't picky with DVD media and will play DivX files then this will do the trick. As for its' upscaling with DVD's, I was quite happy with my NB DVP818's playback on my Pana 32LE7 via s-video already, the only really discernible difference was the thinner black bars. However on DivX playback, the upscaling was more prevalent.
