cound be the regional codes of your dvd player. or maybe your philips one is region free when you got it.
you can do a search on the web to see how you can turn your pioneer dvd player in to a region free one.

You don't need yo buy new player... search online or pioneer service center to change the region setting of the unit. I got my Philips dvd player and didn't play region 1 Dvd, I brought back to the shop and  took only 5 mins. to set code to all region. Good Luck... ::)
