Question about "Popeye"
« on: Aug 10, 2007 at 11:10 AM »

This question is for those who saw Bernal's "Popeye" knockoff. Does Ariel Ureta wolf down popcorn instead of spinach as his super-energizing food? My memory of seeing this film during the early 1980s in a yellowed video transfer is pretty hazy and
I'm worried that I might be making up this little detail. (What a weird detail to make up! Makes me nervous about my sanity.)

Welcome aboard, jbc.

Good question indeed. I can't even recall if its popcorn or spinach. The best episode there was Gosiengfiao's vampire segment when Ariel Ureta hit Celia Rodriguez on the road by accident and it turns out she was a vampire.  ;D
The chase sequences were so craping hilarious!

The dream sequence was way way ahead of any film that I saw in the 70's.

Too bad the film is now considered lost. Even Elwood Perez and Douglas Quijano who produced the film in the 70's has no copy of the film.

Oh yeah, I remember that! Although I can't rightly remember if he ate spinach or popcorn. So this movie is lost forever eh? That's sad :( I remember watching all the time in the afternoons at home during summer vacation

Lost...I think it was mercenaries on the payroll of King Features Syndicate who did it in

LOL. I think the best person who can answer this is Ariel Ureta himself--doesn't he have a radio show with Winnie Cordero on weekday mornings? Maybe someone can phone in or email him the question.

Ariel is looking for a copy of this film. Also ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN another cult classic trilogy feature from Sine Pilipino Productions.

Long before copyright infringement exists, SUPERMAN & SPIDER WOMAN were already in the same movie in ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN.  :D

the Spider Woman character unlike Superman wasn't a comic book character. she was literally a babaeng gagamba which was played by Rita Gomez...

Wasn't it Aurora Pijuan (Manotoc)? I dimly recall watching this on TV, one of those  fuzzy Tagalog films shown during the afternoons.

My brother told me, it's BALUT that he eats instead of spinach. but there's a scene in Luneta where there's no balut, he decided to eat popcorn instead.  Also he can't recall if its apo hiking or tito vic & joey that sings in the background long before they did this is 'something about mary'.

I also remember a movie called "Batwoman and Robin" starring Jun Aristorenas' wife as Batwoman, can't recall her name; and Robin Aristorenas playing Robin. I also remember the bad guy was an evil magician named "Sanjo D'Great" and he was played by Paquito Diaz. Anyone know if this too is a lost movie??

The balut that Ariel devoured is in the episode of ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN. It was also Boots Anson Roa who sell to him the paraphernalia.

And yeah, before the Apo Hiking Society join Dina and Alfie in Gosiengfiao's BLUE JEANS, they were already making  raket in SI POPEYE ATBP as the singing narrators.  :D

That would be Virginia and it probably is lost although I hope not. I'd go watch this again. There was a sequel to this, too, called Johnny Joker with Jun Aristorenas as Joker, Palito as Plastic Man and Freddie Webb as Spider Man. Both were directed by Jun Aristorenas, I think.

Now that's what I call a true Marvel-DC crossover!!!!!

I'm kinda surprised that even back then they were able to pull off those "Plastic Man" FX during the pre-CGI age

yes, those were the good old days when people relied on their own skill, know how and creativity to achieve special effects. Nowadays it's all computers.
