I was in my early teens in 1980 when I watched what I thought was the greatest Wimbledon finals between the legends Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. Who would forget that over-extended 4th set (I forgot the score but it was an endless tie-break that went beyond 10 points I think) when Borg finally equalized the match at 2-2 and eventually won in the 5th set.
Last night's match between Nadal and Federer was definitely on the same level of greatness. It could have gone either way. Federer's resilience was unbelievable despite losing the 1st 2 sets. He simply wouldn't relinquish his title without fighting up to the very last point. How many times was he down 0-30 on his serve, only to answer with 4 straight point to win the game. On the other hand, Nadal's recovery from all missed chances to wrap it all up in the 4th was equally amazing. Had Nadal lost this championship, he would forever be haunted by the memories of him being up 5-2 in the tie-break, serving for the match, yet eventually losing the set. John McEnro failed to do that in his epic battle with Borg in 1980. I didnt want it to end despite totally losing Monday morning sleep.
