im interested on this particular player, due to its divx function and a lowly priced P3,100 in macro strores in davao city.  but my prob is .... ok ba kaya ito? will it really plays avi files . i need a good testimonial from an owner of this unit.or any other branded divx ultra capable player u could recommend with the same price range and where to buy it?  tia.

I also saw this DVD player along with their other Philips models:

Philips 3110k - P2,490.00  --> progressive scan, 2ch analog, 1 co-axial digital

Philips 3126 - P3,200 --> progressive scan, 5.1 analog, 1 co-axial digital

Anyone who tried these players? Share your experiences naman.  8)

Yup I'd appreciate some feedback as well. I'm hoping this is the Asian version of the DVP-5160 which got good reviews in Europe. Does it come with a USB port? Also, the "k" at the end -- karaoke or because this is the black model?

Guys,

I saw these items a while ago at SM The block appliance center with discounted prices:

Philips 5166k - P2990 only

Philips 3216 - P2490 only

Anyone who tried these players? Bili na!

Php2990?! That's pretty tempting considering a quick visit to the local Philips site confirmed that this player does indeed accept USB connections and is compatible with all flavors of DivX including DivX Ultra.

Downside is that it doesn't seem to support DTS similar to the previous models in this range.

if you have a receiver that can process DTS...then you're in the clear.

Sir, yung progressive scan feature ba nito ay up to 480p lang? Kaya ba ito ng 720p? Paano malalaman? Wala sa specs e

Okay, some clarifications on the DVP-5166. As per my Anson's suki, the model being sold by SM for Php2990 is the DVP-5166 without karaoke. The latest model is the DVP-5166K with karaoke which is slightly higher at Php3190.

The good news is that you get DivX Ultra support, a USB port, and karaoke at a very competitive price point. This is not an HDMI  upscaling player so native resolution is 480P.

The downside is pretty significant though: this model line has no DTS support at all. It won't even pass a DTS signal to your receiver.

I know that the prices of electronics are dropping fast due to the advent of new technology.

I've noticed however that the newer models no longer carry the dts decoder in the previous models, might this be the reason for lower prices? 5.1 players before usually retails 7k-9k, now you can get a new one for less than 3K.

They have an interesting come on promo though: buy the player and you have 30 days to try it with your discs. If you find a DVD that doesn't work, you can have your unit replaced. Restrictions apply but I didn't read the fine print. Wasn't able to ask if you can request for a refund instead.

Oh well. Thanks for clarifying this.

FYI guys.  Just bought Philips DVP5166 at anson's landmark.  Pag tiningnan mo walang DTS logo na nakalagay.  But according to the Philips salesperson it can still out DTS sound if you have an amplifier with a DTS decoder.  Tinanong din nila ito sa mother company nila bakit ganun, well, Philips told them na pag nilagay daw ang DTS logo nagbabayad pa pala ang philips sa DTS ng patent or something.  So ang ginawa nila ay hindi na nilalagay ang DTS logo, in this way they can cut cost and therefore they can sell the player at a cheaper price, syempre panalo both seller and buyer.

Sa tingin nyo ba nagbabayad din ang mga generic dvd players sa dolby or dts specifically yung mga nabibili sa quiapo at sa mga tiangge dyan sa tabi-tabi? ::) I don't think so.  Siguro kaya nila ito ginawa to compete the price sa generic dvd players.  Syempre dun na ko sa branded, konti lang naman difference eh.

The guy told us that we can refund our money pag hindi nadecode ng ampli namin yung dts.  We tried it at home and YES! na decode yung dts. ;)  ;D

I don't know if this applies to all Philips DVD player na walang DTS logo, but of course you can try... just bring a dts dvd to test it. :)

That's great news. I was looking at the DVP-5166K and almost picked it up until my Anson's suki gave me the "official" Philips line. Guess he didn't know any better. How much did you pay for it?

The original price was P3,100 but they have a promo less P500.  Pero sa kulit namin, natawaran pa namin, naging P2,500 na lang kasi sabi namin cash naman. ;D

i tried using my external hdd but it wasn't detected by my philips HTIB. i don't think it will work for this player either.

when you connect your ipod to the PC via USB, it is detected as a "removable drive" (just like a usb thumb drive). i think this is the reason why the ipod is detected by the player. on the other hand, an external hdd is detected as a "local disk" which the player seemingly rejects. :-[

kindly post if you have other observations.

im assuming that you are using a 2.5 external hdd.. that is why it didnt work.. most of this 2.5 external hdd uses the power at the usb port.. which means the player might not be supplying enough power to your external hdd.. try using a 3.5 external hdd because it doesnt use the usb port as power source..

another problem maybe is that your hdd is formatted to ntfs instead of fat32..
