Gaming Versus Viewing
« on: Oct 30, 2007 at 10:18 AM »
I picked up this 360 game-Rainbow Six Vegas (R6V) and played it on my 5.1 setup and this is the first time I have appreciated the money I spent on a yammie 657 and wharfe floorstanders and sub.

Every time you plug a tango (terrorist) using a sub machine gun you will feel the bass, I mean every F'ing pull of a trigger. You ran out of ammo and decided to shoot with the desert eagle more unbelievable oomph on your chest.Amazing

Surround Sound is so unbelievably detailed. When you enter the casino and enter some of the lounges playing music, every turn you make pans the music around the left and right surround speakers. Can you imagine the control you are getting out of this game?

I mean in watching movies, you just sit there passively and wait for the sounds to wow you and once you're done with the movie that's it, you'll get nothing out of it new and that is why we buy another and stash them up somewhere as soon as we're done watching them. Same story, same sounds.

Gaming is such a different experience on 5.1 setup (XBOX360 games support DD 5.1 only, sorry). Specially on this Tom Clancy title, you'll get the BASS and surround effects you want, on demand, on every pull of a trigger and every detonation of a C4, talk about interactivity. The game developers even managed to tinker the sound of bullets flying inside a sound treated lounge (music/theater lounge) as the baddies guns' sound differently as they shoot inside these rooms. You'll hear them whispering (as you stealth around using the SNAKE CAM), cursing and shouting expletives as they shoot you down in all directions while you try to shoot back lead and in the process, producing fast paced, heart pounding, highly variable sound immersion at its finest.

Graphics wise, well this game and most of other 360 titles support 720p/1080i, so if your fancy is HD, let me say- it's ON.

Gaming and film watching are two different animals and if I'm ever given a choice which to pet for my aural needs, it's gaming FTW hands down as I wait for COD4 and Assassin's Creed's release.

Why "versus" when one can get The Best of Both Worlds;D

Yes, the X360 outputs at DD5.1. But that's part of the basic. Ever played around with 5.1 Dolby Digital with WMA Pro? Config to that on the X360 then config the receiver to play it on Dolby Digital EX (before, I used to run it on Dolby Plus IIx), and it'll push the sound from 5.1-ch to 7.1-ch. With 7.1 surround sound, you'd be surprised how BIOSHOCK comes to life (especially when them Spider splicers are up in the dark ceiling or when Houdini Splicers starts spawning someplace else).

In terms of viewing movies, I only use the X360's HD-DVD drive for HD-DVD movies, PS3 for Blu-ray, and my Onkyo HDMI DV-CP704 DVD upconversion player for DVD movies. It would be such a waste on sound quality if digital output isn't taken advantage.

Currently, I'm going through the campaign mode of Ace Combat Six. Picture and sound will blow you away.

Another game which gives the old sub a workout is Lost Planet: Extreme Condition which for me is a very under rated 360 game.

Great visuals and sound effects, an array of weapons, first person-third person game, Mechs...what more can one ask for?

Try Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

If the campaign mode doesn't impress you- how much more for the multi-player mode!

It's that good!!!  ;D  :o  ;D

Also, wait 'til you get to the AC3 mission in the campaign mode!
