In most cases the R3 & R1 transfers come from the same master.

except for the cheap DVD5's from Viva
and some of the budget Magna releases

Good day gentlemen,

Pardon my ignorance, or maybe OT but I would just like to inquire,
Can you see any difference in terms of PQ between Region 1 and Region 3 DVDs..?

Thanks,

ABC

If they came from the same transfer, then PQ is almost identical.  Where lies the difference is the SQ of R1s where mostly have DTS options.  Also the packaging of R1s has more quality vs R3s.

Simpsons the Movie-animation not as good as Pixars but colors were really awesome
House of Flying Daggers- great scenery and colors
Kung Fu Hustle
Into The Blue- very nice carribean and underwater scenes
Vertical Limit- even on a non-superbit versions clarity is astounding
Hairspray

One thing I notice on these movies,
granted that are truly spectacular in PQ, but seeing them
up close sa big screen TV, kitang kita ang mga fake backgrounds...

Dvd quality nowadays have improved since the introduction of bluray. I think the dvds now are bluray ripped so the Pq is excellent plus the AQ is dts certified.

Dvd quality nowadays have improved since the introduction of bluray.

DVD releases improved even before the official introduction of Blu-ray.  But it's true that Blu-ray had something to do with it.  They started minting high definition masters in anticipation of the introduction of HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Rumor has it that The Godfather Trilogy has been remastered in high def  ---  not just 1080p, but in 4K (4096 x 2048 resolution).  If this is true, then the studios are probably getting ready for the 4k home video format.  (See my Red-Ray post: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=70470.msg800025#msg800025 )

I think the dvds now are bluray ripped so the Pq is excellent plus the AQ is dts certified.

The standard DVD was authored directly from the high-definition master, not ripped from the Blu-ray disc.

Today, a master for home video is usually made in high definition.  From that hi def master, they encode both a standard DVD version and Blu-ray version.

Take Con Air for example.  The old DVD version was very good at the time it was released.  But today, it's a blurry, non-anamorphic antique.

They made a new anamorphic master in hi def, then released a new standard DVD version.  From the same high def master, they released a Blu-ray version:

It's unlikely that the new standard DVD version was ripped from Blu-ray for the following reasons:

(a) The Con Air Blu-ray version was released on January 8, 2008; the latest standard DVD version was released much earlier, on May 6 2006;

(b) The first Blu-ray discs, encoded in MPEG-2, were released on June 20, 2006; the first AVC and VC-1 encodes were released in September 2006.  Con Air Blu-ray is encoded in AVC, so it's unlikely that Buena Vista already had the AVC encode at the time the latest DVD version was released in May 2006.

(c) The latest Con Air standard DVD is an unrated extended cut (122 mins.); the Blu-ray version is a theatrical cut (115 mins.)

The DVDs ripped from Blu-ray are the fakes.  Since they were encoded by pirates, encoding errors are common ---  average bitrates are usually 9+ to 11+ Mbps, way higher than the DVD spec of 6 to 8 max. ave., and 9.8 max. peak.  Excessively high bitrates cause judders, skips and pauses on many players.

The orig is still the best.  ;)

I guess a good example of pq improvement is the new collection of James Bond films (21 of them). Each frame was individually scanned and digitally restored. The pq, even of the 1960's films, is very good. Parang photo shop restoration, except that it is done for each and every frame. If you have 24 frames per second, there are 172,800 frames in 2 hours of film time. Each of these frames is digitally restored. Scratches are individually removed. Pretty incredible.

"House of Flying Daggers" has an awesome soundtrack but its pq has often been criticized. If you look at the "Echo Dance" scene, you will notice that the whites are overblown and the details are crushed. Have you noticed this as well?

I love this movie so much that when I was in HK, I bought the HK version (double-dip), hoping that the pq was better. It seems better but only marginally. I hope they produce a good BD version with an improved pq (triple-dip!).
The only main attraction of this movie is the Echo Dance of Zhang Zhi Yi. Asian movies in bluray are only as par as the DVD release much cleaner lng but not overwhelming so to speak, not worth upgrading to bluray just keep ur Dvd copy of this film.

The Disney animation flicks are just out of this world in terms of PQ clarity.  They do have an advantage given that they can control almost all conditions vs. a usual on cam location setting for the regular movies.  Galing, great collection.  :)

Just viewed Spider-Man 3 on DVD for the first time.

I am totally astounded, one of the best SD transfers no doubt.
