you can take it from the volume control sir, before or after the volume control depends on your application. for subwoofer apps you can take it after the volume control.

Any ill effects, do I have to turn the volume higher to get the same volume out of my main speakers ?

as long as the gear that will be connected has enough impedance I'm sure you'll have no problem. as for the sound level, that again depends on the gear that is connected thru your planned preouts... it would be more helpful if you could tell what gear/s will be connected to the preout.

The amp is a Cayin A-70T this is where the planned pre-out will be coming from, it will be connected to an  Electronic Subwoofer crossover and then to  Sony Integrated amplifier. or Cayin  pre-out to  Sony integrated and connect the crossover via tape loop

so it's for a sub, better take it after the volume control so the sub's level is also controlled by the cayin...

properly done there is absolutely no risk. just make sure your gear is unplugged before you open it... you just need to tap the middle terminals of the pot and the ground for your sub's signal take off point.
