If I am not mistaken Ultra HD would be the marketing name for 4K so that consumers would know that better it is about a TVs resolution 4K gives a wrong impression on regular consumers who are not keen on the definition.

Review from the CES 2013 floor:

Panasonic TX-P60ZT60
By John Archer
9 Jan 2013 11:08

... In particular, its black level response was almost unbelievably good. What we'd previously admired as class-leading blacks on the the VT50 were left looking green and grey by the truly immaculate blacks delivered by the P60ZT60. Seriously, the impact of the demo was akin to the gasps of amazement that met Pioneer's final KURO demo before that company withdrew from the TV market.

It's official: 3D is dead
The tech industry's annual hot air balloon show is gone, and the world's a better place for it

The 3D TV won its tortured, protracted war — you can buy a 3D TV anywhere and at any time — and nobody could care less.

To me, the 4K OLED is the most impressive CES 2013 item.

The press is making it sound like there's fierce OLED competition between Panny and Sony, each presenting a "Worlds Largest" 56" 4K OLED for this year's trade show.

Actually, Panny and Sony have an OLED manufacturing partnership.

Curved LED-LCD 4K TV:

Yet another curved 105-inch TV, this one from Samsung

... the enormous Samsung uses standard LED LCD, not OLED, technology. The only other curved LED LCD on the market is the 65-inch Sony KDL-65S990A, and it has standard 1080p resolution (Samsung did show 55- and 65-inch curved 4K TVs at IFA, but they never shipped).

Dolby Bets on Brightness to Transform TV
1:53 pm
Dec 10, 2013

... “On brightness, we are off by a factor of 200,” said Pat Griffis, executive director of technology strategy, during a briefing with reporters last week.

Of course, staring at the equivalent of a 100-watt bulb would be intolerable. But real TV images mix dark and light, limiting the risks of harsh glare, Rockwell wrote. The key is to have sharp contrast with bright and dark points of an image.

“If you just raise the brightness of a TV display without increasing the contrast, you end up with dull, washed-out images,” Rockwell said. “When you raise both, something magical happens: images on the TV start to look like the real world.”

CES 2014: Google to Show Off 4K YouTube
Streaming Using its Own VP9 Codec
Posted on January 3, 2014 3:12 PM by Rob Williams

... With its own VP9 video codec in-hand, Google will be showing attendees just how feasible it is to stream 4K content through its YouTube service. For those unaware, VP9 is Google’s answer to the expensive commercial codecs out there, and a direct competitor to H.265. It’s royalty-free, and as Google hopes to prove, very efficient.

Panasonic CES 2014 TVs: All LED, one 4K, and little excitement
Panasonic is no longer making plasma displays, and judging from its lackluster lineup of new

CES 2014 Is Turning Into A Funeral For 3D
For some technologies, the Consumer Electronics show is like a hospital.
The place you’re born, and the place you’ll die.
John Herrman
BuzzFeed Staff
posted on January 6, 2014 at 4:19pm EST

... CES 2010 was all about 3D TV, as was CES 2011. The next year, the industry’s hangover was setting in — by CES 2013, 3D had become fully commodified. It was included in TVs and simply listed as a feature. It was there because it had no reason not to be, not because anyone was asking for it.

In 2014, however, manufacturers are beginning to wonder if 3D is even worth an afterthought.

Malabo na ang support sa Smart Evolution.  Looks like Samsung will let it quietly die.

As for plasma, Samsung assured CNET editor David Katzmaier that they will be producing a 2014 line of plasmas:

Samsung: We'll have new plasmas, just not at CES 2014
Among the two remaining TV makers that produce plasma TVs,
LG and Samsung, only LG is announcing any plasmas at CES 2014.
by David Katzmaier | January 6, 2014 2:00 PM PST
http://ces.cnet.com/8301-35303_1-57616627/samsung-well-have-new-plasmas-just-not-at-ces-2014/

Analyzing the CNET article, it looks like Samsung will also be exiting plasma sometime soon.

First, notice that there are no plans to improve their plasma line; in fact, model features are going to be on a downgrade direction.

Second, their 2014 plasmas are scheduled for a mid-year release, a sign of an impending phase-out, the same way they quietly phased out their rear projection TVs.

========================================

LG will have 5 plasmas for 2014:

- 2013's PN4500 (42" & 50" 720p, no 3D, no SMART);
- Flagship PN6900 (60" 1080p 3D, no SMART);
- PB6600 (60" & 50" 1080p, no 3D, no SMART);
- PB5600 (60" 1080p, no 3D, no SMART); and
