Superman's Demise:  Time for Shaq to Retire

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-shaq012308&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

I agree.   Nothing left to prove anymore.  He has 4 rings.   His best years were the Lakers Championship trilogy.  But playing those years not in the best of shape and conditioning proved to be devastating to his body.   His style of play, pounding and being pounded, is not good for career longevity.  Sharp contrast to Kareem's body type and style of play, which is more finesse than power.

If he retires, he is giving his legacy and the Heat that much needed break.

Shaq took hit health (and weight) for granted.
He's feeling the cons of going into each season heavier than the previous season.
If he intends to finish his final 2 years of his contract he needs to be more disciplined with his weight and conditioning.

If has half the discipline and dedication of Zo, he could last the 2 years as a very good role player for the Heat. They need to draft a good big next year (Hibbert, Hansborough, Beasly etc). Or then can gamble on OJ Mayo.

in 2003 yes... shaq was overweigh but not now... his age really is showing
but surpridingly   he's still playing at full speed with injuries and all
where he should be 3rd tier in his remaining years, (like kareem when he had magic and worthy)
problem is they are blaming his huge salry for his lack of playing time whereas
he already took a salary cut of 10M a year... magine that...

and admittedly riley said he made a whole bunch of mistakes in his player trades it shows pat... it shows

He could be better once he improves his FT shooting.
However, I think the Cavs are gaoing to have a hard time come playoffs this year.
LBJ is surounded by less than role players.
He needs more of those 4th Q efforts to come up as the East champs.

possible scenario from yahoo din
Nets in three-way talks for Kidd

NETS get
-Devean George
-Jerry Stackhouse
-Travis Outlaw
-Channing Frye
-Jarrett Jack

Trailblazers get
-Devin Harris

Mavs get
-Jason Kidd
-Malik Allen
-Jamaal Magloire

NETS-with stack and devean's expiring contracts the nets would have the leverage to attract big name free agent.. plus with kidd gone marcus williams maturity would be now on track plus travis outlaw and frye... bigs who would'nt want bigs

BLAZERS- i dont know about this.. they already have a solid backcourt... hmmmm can you trade an injured player? on NBA 2k kasi you cannot he..he but if you would rethink about it its just outlaw for harris...

MAVS-kidd vs nash...west finals... book it!

If I'm Portland I won't pull the trigger.
Outlaw has been a big part of Portland's resurrection in the West.
Brandon Roy is outstanding, but Outlaw contributes a lot as well.
Blake and Jack are not your ideal PGs but they are doing the job.
Plus Roy also

Devin Harris won't make up for the hole that Outlaw will create.
Some of it will be compensated since Harris will play point and Roy can move to the Shootig Guard position (more touches in scoring position).

But overall I don't like that deal for Portland.

Whoa! Great news! Tamang-tama habang wala pa si Bynum..
****************************************************

Lakers trade for Gasol

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Memphis center Pau Gasol, league sources said Friday afternoon.

The Lakers will send center Kwame Brown and rookie point guard Javaris Crittenton to Memphis in the trade, along with at least one future No. 1 pick.

It is possible the Lakers will re-sign free agent Aaron McKie to send to Memphis to balance the contracts in the deal.

Gasol, a 7-footer, can play center for the Lakers until Andrew Bynum returns from a knee injury sometime in March. Then, Gasol, who is averaging 18.9 points and 8.8 rebounds, can slide over into the power forward spot. His passing and shooting skills are ideal to operate in the triangle offense. This move pushes the Lakers into championship contention.

For Memphis, Brown’s $9 million contract comes off the salary cap at the end of the season. Gasol has three years left and nearly $50 million left on his contract. He is averaging nearly 19 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Grizzlies.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal first reported the story Friday in its online edition.

I was so frustrated yesterday with the Piston's late seconds' 3 to bury the Lakers, but Kupchak surely made up for it by this trade!!!   Imagine a Bynum, Gasol and Odom frontcourt???   Wow!!!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Its unbelievable so little the Lakers gave up for Gasol.   I think he is perfect for the triangle.   So ano, papa trade pa ba si Kobe now?

some reaction from Suns fans:

"Lakers are going to Kill us on the boards with Bynum, Gasol, and Odom. Will we get a rebound against them. Wow Lakers are scary now."

"What the F!!! Are you kidding me, Kwame, Crittenton, and two first that are going to be late first rounders!
I think I am going to be sick!!! "

"When deals like this go down, it makes the deals we have made the past couple years look so horrible.
It's a very good trade for the Lakers. "

"I'm actually worried about Kobe, Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol being on the court together."

When Bynum gets back and picks up where he left off, astig yung twin towers ng Lakers.. Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Kobe and Fisher yung starting 5.. then you've got a pretty reliable bench now with Farmar, Ariza, Walton, Vujacic and Radmanovic.. just no more injuries.. Now, they're really back to being contenders.. Exciting 'to come playoff time.. looks like Kobe's going to be a Laker for quite a long time..  ;D

with kwame's damon's contracts come off the book and swift might be traded soon... memphis is way under the salary cap with a young core of mike conley, rudy gay, juan carlos navarro, hakim warrick...

familair? yep portland route to rebuilding plus cap room to lure big name free agent.... nice call too by memphis management

the west just got tougher...

well i for one can't wait for a lakers-celtics finals again

but i also can't wait to hear the final news on bynum. ric bucher of espn indicates he may be out...for the season. wag naman sana.
Getting Gasol means they dont have to hasten the return of Bynum.   But im also anticiapating how will the twin tower line-up will play out in the Laker tri-offense.

I was browsing the Suns and Spurs forums.....they are all putting out trade probabilities to improve their fave teams' line-up. That after cursing the trade...  ;D ;D

Grand theft Pau was how ESPN described it. Waaaay better upgrade than begging a loser like Webber to join them.

I am glad Pau Gasol ended up in P&G, but I am sad that they had to let go of Crittenton, coz, in the long run, I think he's got better skills than Farmar. And no matter how much it makes me cringe when Kwame's on the floor, he was probably the best defender the LAkers had on the post. Oh well, can't wait to see Pau's debut with the LAkers. Oh, and Kobe erupts for 46 as the Lakers burry the Raptors, 121-101.

I don't think The Logo's running the Girzz anymore, but I think the youth rebuilding is all set with Rudy Gay leading them and Javaris ready to show what he's got with (I'm assumimng) increasede PT at Memphis.

And holy crap! How long are the Lakers front court gonna be with Pau at PF, Bynum a Center and Odom (if he doesn't get traded) at SF?  :o That's not counting Ariza and Radmanovich coming off the bench along with Luke.

This trade elevates LA from darkhorse status to legitimate contenders, assuming Bynum gets back 100% healthy this season.

With them over the salary cap, Im a little worried how are they gonna sign Bynum to a max contract when renewal time comes.  Im pretty confident though that Kupchak will find ways, as there are still huge contract to get rid off, like Odom's and Radma's.

This is rebuilding on the fly for the Lakers.   And I am pretty sure Stern is smiling.   A Lakers-Celtics Finals will make Stern smile up to his ears!!!

their game against the Raptors earlier showed how excited they were with the acquisition of Gasol.. they came out totally on fire.. after that disappointing loss to Detroit, I thought they were going to start out cold.. it was an easy 46 points for Kobe.. almost everything he threw up went in.. he seems to love playing against the Raptors..

if they keep playing that way, and with Gasol now, they have a legitimate post threat again.. he may not be like Bynum defensively, his offense will more than make up for it.. their bench has got to be consistent as well.. I hope Bynum gets back alright even though it takes him a bit longer..

oo nga eh.. i guess they've just been really in the news this entire time.. from the off-season trade demands of Kobe, their surprise showing and big improvement of Bynum, the injury to Bynum and now this trade with Gasol.. then you add the possibility of a Lakers-Celtics championship, they're certainly going to be talked about the whole season..

Hope Bynum rumor isn't true (about him being out for the season, i mean).

Yikes.  Where did this rumor come from?  I thought the initial diagnosis was that he will be gone until mid-March only.  I've been reading a lot of Gasol trade analyses online, but I didn't come across any report about Bynum being out for the season.  Any updates?

It was obvious that the Lakers pulled the trigger on this trade at least to salvage momentum for what was turning out to be a promising season, which was highlighted by Bynum's stellar play.  But without Bynum for the rest of season, the Lakers won't be able to realize the fruits of this trade completely.  Gasol makes their frontcourt formidable but IMO still not strong enough to compete against the best in the West (especially on the defensive end) this year.  Of course there are projected long term benefits, but Kobe and Lakers fans like me can be quite impatient.

Yeah, maybe this thread should be changed and renamed a Lakers fans' thread.  :)  Pasensya na sa ibang NBA fans.  I have a feeling though that there will be other big-time trades in the coming weeks.
