MAGNA RE-RELEASES ( WITH SLIPCASE )
« on: Jan 31, 2008 at 01:37 PM »
Saw some Magnavision Re-Releases of old dvds, this time with slipcases and it says special edition, selling @P375

Four Brothers
Mission Impossible
MI : 2
Dreamgirls ( this one is selling @P475 )

Not sure if these are all the same editions before and they just improved on the packaging.  They all have a sticker of IMPORTED dvds so I guess they're not locally minted.

Anyone care to comment?

I think I also saw The Bourne Identity and Transformers sporting new slightly-cheap-looking slipcases.

Seems like Magna is re-releasing some older dvds.  I also saw the Punisher and some Audrey Hepburn dvds sporting new covers.  Its says Imported DVDs but upon closer look, it seems like a budget release.  Hmmmm...  BTW, these are all selling at P299 naman.

Scrap The Bourne Identity. I think it was Mission: Impossible that I saw in Astrovision Trinoma.

I bought Roman Holiday (Special Edition) for Php 299. The quality of the new cover looks good. I can't wait to watch this during the weekend.

Bought the previous imported Roman Holiday early last year.  I think I got it for P375, before Magna releases plunged to P199.  But no regrets since classics like these can be watched over and over again.  Enjoy allanmandy!

There's a misprint on the new cover of Roman Holiday. It says the movie is presented in color, when it is in black-and-white.

I also noticed a tacky, glued-on specs correction patch on the new slipcased Mission: Impossible II, similar to what Magna did with the two-disc Jarhead and other past releases with errorson the back cover.

Is the re-released Mission: Impossible still single layer, or has Magna released the DL version now?

Breakfast At Tiffany's also has a new cover, similar to the reddish cover of Roman Holiday. Maybe the other Audrey Hepburn movies will follow suit.

The "old" movies ( LARA CROFT, MI:1 & MI:2, FOUR BROTHERS, etc ) with new slipcases are selling at P375.

The newer ones like SHOOTER & DREAMGIRLS are selling at P475.

Are all these new re-releases at 299 Imported DVD9s?  If you bought one, please post title and whether it is Imported DVD as the triangular gold sticker indicate.

The reason I post this is that I bought Snake In The Eagle Shadow at 299.  The sticker indicate it is Imported, The DVD print looks imported.  When I got home and opened it, it's local DVD5!

I was wondering whether other 299 releases are indeed imported or local DVD5 or DVD9s.

Locally minted DVD5 (single barcode in the inner disc area) and local DVD9 (double barcode in the inner disc area) have the title of the DVD printed in the same area as the barcode.

Imported discs have numbers not title.

That's as far as my (extensive) experience with Magnavision DVDs tell me...

@techdude
If an imported sticker is indicated, does this automatically mean that the DVD must be dual layer?

I don't think so, as short movies can be single layer.  But the movie I bought is (as far as I can tell) locally minted.  It comes from the same replicating machines as other local Magnavision releases.

As stated for Magnavision movies:  locally minted DVDs has the title in the inner portion of the disc, near the barcodes.    Correct me if I am wrong, but Magnavision makes enough money off me, that I believe I am right (based on experience)...

You can tell by the look and the packaging if it's locally minted or not. The Snake in the Eagles Shadow I believe is similar to the Drunken Master DVD which is also locally minted.  I got that months ago @ P199.  It says DVD9 on the cover but it's actually DVD5.

But if it says "imported" and it's not, I believe a return and exchange is possible.

Drunken Master is not.  The (Drunken Master) cover has the "layout and design: Sony 2007, the box that list subtitles, aspect ratio, movie length, etc, and the DVD9 logo" that I associate with locally manufactured DVDs.

I happen to have both.

Yes, I believe return is possible.  But I wonder if those Astro sales people knows the difference between local and imported discs.

I will probably keep the DVD, it's just that if I had known it was local, I would probably have waited until it becomes 199 before buying it.

Just bought the following from last week's Astro Podium sale :

SHOOTER & FOUR BROTHERS   both are the new releases by Magna and has a slip case packaging.

Though it says "Imported" DVDs, I swear the dvds are locally minted and this was confirmed by techdude's observation.  Both are dual layer naman.

I'm not really complaining naman as I bought them on sale.  But I just feel that the Imported DVD sticker is inappropriate. Unless they mention Imported packaging.

I also bought SHOOTER & FOUR BROTHERS last night and I agree that these (and maybe majority of the other Magna new releases) are locally minted. To anyone here who has bought a budget version of any Magnavision disc, maybe you can check your disks(s) - in the inner portion of the disc, there's a label stating DVD5 LO / DVD9 LO. I think that LO means LOCAL. I also bought On The Waterfront and found a similar label.

Just sharing my observation...

I'll mention to Magna people the next time I go to Podium.  Besides, the slip case will look better WITHOUT the imported sticker, don't you think so?  It's just me  ;D because I don't remove the plastic covering of my slipcases ;)

Looks like most (all?) of those new re-released slipcased and non-slipcased Magnavision DVDs with the triangular gold Imported sticker stucked on the dvd cover are locally minted DVDs.

I bought:

Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life
Four Brothers
Snake in The Eagle Shadow
Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn)

The first three are slipcased.

All are locally minted DVD9s.  While Locally-minted is speculative since Magnavision has not confirmed them as such.  They are minted from the same plant where their previous budget DVD9s are produced.   Certainly not from the same DVD plant that mint their Php 895 and 695 DVDs.

I am not actually complaining, since the quality seems okay (no skipping yet) and the price is reasonable, it's surely better to get locally-minted DVD9s of classics like 'On The Waterfront', 'Forrest Gump', 'Roman Holiday', etc. than not to get anything at all.

Still, posted for reference and whatever it's worth.

______

Not sure if the 2-discs slipcased 'Schindler's List' is locally minted, since the DVD barcoding/inscription is different from those locally minted (which list the DVD title) and Imported (which list numbers).  This one just states 'Technicolor' (on a predominantly black and white film! ;)  )

Anybody here who has the slip-cased MI 1? Is this release a Dual Layer version or just a plain "local" reissue of the old Single Layer release?

Opened my copy & it is a single-layer DVD 5. :(   Buti na lang I just bought it from the Podium sale.
