Am also in the hunt for an affordable player.  I'm also interested to hear feedback on those who have tried this.

Same here! I'm looking at several angles here...checking for pricing and such, co'z I really don't know what to get...whether an Upscaling dvd player or a Bluray player. :-[

Any feedback regarding this unit...also, how does this compare with the Pio600? Which among the two is the better upscaling player? ???

in terms of paper specs, pio 600 is better (but more expensive), since the pio upscales to 1080p while this tosh only upscales to 1080i. but for the price 4700. but you can also consider the pio dv 400 that upscales to 1080p at only around 5k++

diff between pio 600 and 400 is that the 600 can play dvd-audio and sacd on multi channels unlike the 400 which can only play the hd audio on 2 channels.
