Hi,

I noticed there's not much activity in this section. There are lots of reviews about different players below, yung iba 2006 pa na start ang topic. I thought maybe we can start a newer list, for mid or late 2007 to 2008 models...

I think there are too many different brands and models out there in the market today to list them all individually, so i humbly propose we can do them here na lang, if there are no objections.

Right now I have 2 new players.. 1 bought in December 2007, the other 2 weeks ago (actually, not mine, pero I "borrowed" it)  ;D  Im going to list them individually, hopefully if you guys know of any new models, you can list them here as well.  (A bit of a problem is, we may have BOUGHT them recently, but its possible its actually been sitting in the shelves for months now.)

  Here is my own wishlist:

          - can play diff Divx formats, including Div3 (low motion) and other newer codecs like Xvid
          - USB support; SD card support a plus.
          - supports Divx *.sub subtitles files
          - supports  longer filenames then 8 characters.

Anyone knows of a player that qualifies?  If so, please advice, thanks  ;D

Generic Player # 1:
Brand:     HUG
Model:     H6701
Date Purchased:  Jan 2008
Available in Market since:  ???
Price:  P 1,300
Type: Slim/Long

Features:   FM Radio, built in Speakers, Games with 2 controllers, USB support, DivX/MP4 support

Mini-review:

Sleek black design with Orange lights. Havent tested it thoroughly, but plays as well as my previous players.

Pros: Easy to use remote control, the usual benefits of a stable player.

        Cons:

            - No EJECT button on the front panel; I find this odd, all players should have the basic  minimum of Eject-Play-Stop buttons on the player itself if you cant find or use the RC.

            - Power off in the RC turns off the player, but not the lights. You have to manually press the power button on the player to do that. Inconvenient when you are about to sleep after watching, the glaring orange lights can bother some people.

           - Can not play Div3 (low motion) files. Plays the sound, but not video. I have downloaded several episodes in this format.

           - supports 8 character file name only; no subtitle support

  Final notes:

Despite my Cons, looks to be an ok player. Im just looking for something better.
Also, it has the same menu style interface of my previous players (Lexing and Kingsonic). It seems they all use the same kind of chip or software, since they look all alike. (see my next review below for something different).

Generic Player # 2:
Brand:     ACE
Model:     8121
Date Purchased:  Dec 2007
Available in Market since:  ???
Price:  P 1,050  (discounted :-) )
Type: Slim/Compact

Features:   USB support, DivX/MP4 support    (no radio/games/speakers)

Mini-Review:

Bought this as a gift for my mom to replace her broken player, she doesnt need the bells and whistles (radio/games etc) In fact she doesnt even need Divx Support. So I bought the cheapest one in the market. However, upon testing Im surprised with some of its features.

Pros:  - Can play Div3 Low motion files!! cool.

                    -  Different style remote control than the usual Ive seen. For example, it has a button DVD/USB, so you can switch anytime between the two. The other players ive seen/used , you need to make sure there is no disc inside before it can read your USB storage.

                    - Different menu style than the usual Ive seen, (probably different chip/software). The usual layout I always see shows four icons below (MP3, Pictures, Games, Video). This is something different.

Cons:  - power SWITCH (not button)  is at the back

                    -  no subtitles support for divx files,

                    -   only 8 character filenames

                    - this one I find annoying.. when it plays divx files, it shows a display on the upper left corner. ie.,  002/008 means  its playing the 2nd file out of 8.  I CANNOT turn this display off.

                    - showed some problems reading 1 or 2 discs that my other players can play.

Final notes: Good, no-nonsense player for my mom. The fact that it can play Div3 format (something my 4 other players here cannot) and its something-different-from-the-usual design layout of its menus (for data files) looks to be promising for me, but in the end some of its cons outweighs it.

Still looking for that perfect player that can do everything :-)

Share ko lang experience ko sa generic ACE Lexing et. al.

I was thinking of upgrading my old Ganz klar dvd player with built in decoder to the generic ones. I was curious at the usb feature, divx and other new features which my player doesn't have. The oppurtunity came when my mom wanted a cd player for a party. I bought an ace dvd player for her. After the party i took the player to see if it is better than the ganz klar.

The unit that i tried don't have a working 5.1 because it is not accessible thru the setup menu.(i have an ht setup using my old dvd player hooked up to 3 amps.) I returned the ACE player and tried other units until i got one that has a 5.1 feature in the setup menu.

Unfortunately, when i tried it at home, the center channel has a distorted sound. So i returned again the unit and this time auditioned the units at the shop. I ran out of units to test for a good center channel output, i couldn't find one. I ended up just taking home the ACE player back to my mom.

Any generic brand suggestion w/ usb, divx, mp4 feature and a working 5.1 decoding?

The newest generic dvd players here on the market (Olongapo and Dinalupihan) are midi karaoke players and come with a midi disk. Have USB support.  Cost about 2000 peso.
Since I am low on peso's I was not able to buy one. Does anybody of you have experience with such a machine? The brand names are the usual ones.

Thanks, Leo

Lexing DVD-7025 does not read subtitle files. it wont appear on screen.

Maike-Orange DVD-80 reads subtitle files HOWEVER once you play a movie with subtitle file, you CANNOT remove the subtitle on screen. talagang lalabas at lalabas ang subtitle. no way to turn it off.

i deleted my previous post, here is the update for my dvd player

XENON dvd850

can play diff Divx formats,  avi format nasubukan ko na rin and it play smoothly
          - with USB support & SD card
         - support *.srt subtitles files
          - supports  longer filenames then 8 characters.

i learned that avi files are no need to convert it to divx (eto yung mali ko dati, kinoconvert ko sa divx with srt subtitle, kaso nde ng-aapear ang subtitle, it will only work lng pla kung divx ultra yung player)
since nde naman divx-ultra yung xenon 850, at gusto ko ng subtitle, rename ko lang yung subtitle as name of title (ex. jumper.avi  subtitle should be save as jumper.srt)  then burn it dvd using nero (burn as data)  kasya 3 movies sa 4.7gb

3thou last dec, yung ixang model dvd750, 2,500.00 wla nga lang mic,

Purchased a GanzKlar CLU-209 DVD/DivX player. So far it does OK (note: OK, not GOOD for me :-X). Price P1.9K, sale from P2,5K.

-Plays all CD/DVD, Audio, SVCD Divx, xvid, mp3, CDR-RW, DVDR-RW etc.
-5.1 Audio channel output, Digital audio coax output BUT no optical (manual mentions 'optical' but none). Dolby blah blah.
-High-definition(?) 500-lines according to specs. Progressive scanning
-Component/S-video output
-Videoke function with Microphone input
-USB host play, no compact card reader.
-can only read *.srt files, not *.sub or *.idx. 20-character file names
-compact design and other standard functions

It plays discs well, whatever compatible content, even if discs has minor flaws (whether physical or during recording), will just skip but still continues to play. Stereo sound is ok, cannot tell on Dolby surround as I can only connect 2 channels on my amp that has only optical, none of the 5.1 input nor coax.

My only gripes is that it cannot Zoom DivX/Xvid video files. I sometimes need to correct videos thats why i need zoom, as much as possible, not only with DVD videos but with any formats as well. My other branded players like Pioneer, Philips & Samsung can do this (I noticed GanzKlar and other similar generics has identical functions, menu and feel, i.e. Pensonic, Akira etc, have tried them also, they have the same manufacturing source and so it is generic but abit more expensive;D)

It can Zoom DVD videos, but the heck why can't they remove the '2x', '4x' etc indicator on the screen? Again this is a common manifestation with generic players. This is my personal requirement so again, to each his own taste of required functions.

Secondly, mp3 files burned on DVD, navigating is a pain in the ass, WILL NOT SHOW FOLDER menu but instead lists the entire file contents. If you're looking for a specific song/s or folder, then goodluck if you have thousands of files on the disc since you have to browse ALL of it one by one from the beginning (I have not tried with photo files or with CD's, but i bet will behave the same). Durability, can't say much cause its only 3 months old with me, but since its root is generic manufacturing, expect the same lifespan whether with the unit itself or the remote control, especially the function buttons.

For me, if i'm looking for a bargain, it's better that an equipment doesn't last long as long as it does what I want, rather than a durable one but it cannot do what I want, that is satisfaction, not totally though ::)

My rating will be 5/10.
My take: there must be other cheaper but better generics out there (my Pensonic has optical out for P1,5K ;)).

ACE Mid Size (White) with USB- 850 pesos  :o...can handle 500G HDD with it's USB (dito pa lamang lamang na)...of course, kaya lahat nang DVD pati na iyun' "Blu Ray Kuno DVD" na hirap basahin nang mga 1st & 2nd Generation DVD players ke' generic o' branded (as far as I know, only the Pioneer and Philips players can handle these flawlessly).  ;D

hello to everybody!

can anybody kindly give some info on the latest NextBase models?  I've had 2 NextBase DVD players and have had very good experiences with them.  I couldn't remember the first model since i already gave it to my brother but the latest I had is the NB656 portable.  Recently, the problem I had with the NB656 is that the tray gets stuck at the port when you open/close.  Video also skips quite frequently on some DVDs.  i will bring it to the electronics shop for some repair and hope the problems will be resolved.  Anyway, it's been with me for more than 2 years now and so i guess its time to replace it with a new one.

A friend also recommended Ganz Klar brand.  Any reviews on this?

Thanks in advance.

Barrister- Definite na...Region Free.....tested it earlier today. Model # pala ay DVD-510; I went back to get another unit, however, there was no more 510,so I settled with the 517,however, the owner doesn't want to give the same price of 850 pesos, and insisted on 900 pesos, so binayaran ko na lang. marami pang 850 pesos iyun' Unikon,at mayroon na rin 800 pesos, pero nakalimutan ko ang brand.Mayroon rin Orange, pero di' ko kinuha, dahil ito iyun' na report mong region locked di' ba'.

LG DVD players, bro.  Mine doesn't have an SD card reader or USB support but that's because I got the cheapest LG DVD player available.  But it plays DivX (.avi) and supports .sub subtitle files.  Dunno about Xvid though.  Ano ba ang file extension nun?  Usually kasi, I just download .avi files.

bought a GanzKlar TS410K for 2,499 at Ansons.  I was surprised that the picture quality on HDMI is the same as Samsung 1080p7.  Region 1, 3, and pirated stuff works.  My Samsung plays well above Philips and Pioneer on HDMI models.   Reason I bought the GanzKlar is because my Samsung conked out, and on warranty heaven being fixed.

By the way, im using this on 720p res on my Panasonic 42pv70.

None...and it'll probably take sometime, initial signs will start once the big chain stores in the  USA starts selling Generic Blu Rays, but I doubt it'll happen soon.  ::)

The ones you saw in Manila are repackage dual layered DVDs,some are plain clone of the R3 releases in SEA; although I've heard of china produced Blu Rays hovering around the 450-600Php range, no one has actually reported that it's the real McCoy.  ;)

In the meantime, Enjoy your DVDs, I think they'll be here for a long time.

Blu ray might go share the same fate of SACD and DVD audio, unless Sony wizened up.

saw something kasi of some p***ted stuff disc in manila and it has a plastic case of a orig bluray disc.

I bought several of those.  They are not BD.

They are standard DVD-9, transcoded from BD.  Some are just plain old standard DVD-9, directly copied from the SD DVD, with some minor reauthoring modifications such as an annoying BD logo trailer and additional foreign subtitles.

Expectedly, the ones directly copied from standard DVDs are good, but the BD transcodes usually have encoding errors.

just wondering baka meron na sa player. thanks

Wala pa.  Wala pa kasing demand, the general public is not interested.

May demand na ang pinoydvd members, but pinoydvd does not represent the general public.
