Well I'd rather pay shipping than wait for months.  I did the same scheme before.  Delivered the stuff by free shipping to my mom's address in CO and waited for them to mail the stuff to Tokyo.  I'm too impatient for that unless Amazon won't deliver an item outside the US (like software).

i'm in the process of upgrading the firmware of my A3 to 2.0. keeping my fingers crossed that things will go well :)

btw, i just tried playing S-DVDs on my HD-A3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which my trusty Pioneer couldn't play anymore (picture freeze etc) played flawlessly! and the PQ is pretty good. i even set the resolution to 1080i.

update successful!

i've thought about my dilemma again, and for now, my compromise is to buy only the sd/hd combo discs. that way, i get to use the dvd even when i have no more player.

have you guys seen the prices on the A30/135 supposedly available from best buy and other brick and mortar stores? If I could get my hands on them, I'd buy again.  And then open another thread like this of course, after experiencing buyer's remorse. ;D

Article from Slate:

I'm the Idiot Who Bought an HD-DVD Player
A casualty of the format war tells all.
By Josh Levin
Posted Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at 5:18 PM ET

Toshiba finally mercy-killed its HD-DVD format last week, ending a drawn-out fight with Sony's Blu-ray for high-definition disc supremacy. The format's demise has brought HD-DVD owners untold humiliation: reams of newspaper stories comparing them to the losers of yore who bought into Betamax and LaserDisc, the sad sight of desperate early adopters peddling brand-new players on Craigslist, and, worst of all, a Web site celebrating the similarities between HD-DVD and Hillary Clinton. I'm sick of the mockery and abuse. You see, I'm one of the morons who bought an HD-DVD player.

While I freely admit my moronitude, I still believe the HD-DVD owner is an unfairly maligned creature. It wasn't dumb to jump on the HD-DVD bandwagon: Toshiba's technology was cheaper and more consumer-friendly than Sony's. It was dumb, though, to assume that the forces of good would triumph. In the end, the fight between Sony and Toshiba played out like some kind of bizarro sports movie: The bad guy won at the end by clocking the lovable underdog in the crotch with a baseball bat.

In retrospect, it might've been smarter not to buy either player. But alas, I have a strange affliction that left me susceptible to HD-DVD's limited charms: I'm a gadget-loving cheapskate. The typical early adopter opens his wallet first and asks questions later; he doesn't care how many gigs of RAM are inside the MacBook Air, just that it slides into a Manila envelope. The HD-DVD player, however, appealed to a different group, electronics fetishists too imprudent to wait out a format war yet stingy enough to base their purchasing decisions entirely on price. Of course, this is an irrational position, like signing up for the inaugural commercial flight to the moon but only paying for a coach-class ticket. But that's how my brain works—I have a Creative Zen Micro, not an iPod.

Another "so called good news" for those who still buy hddvd discs. Universal prices went down further. 8)  I got american gangster 16.95, Eastern promises 16.95, Elizabeth the golden age 16.95, Pianist 11.95.  By the way, reminder for those who just ordered universal titles at 14.95 or 19.95, its now 11.95 and 16.95 :), Email them for the credit. Hopefully mine will be approved. They have a 30 day price guarantee.

Sorry did not mention, ya its amazon. However, the sale only lasted a few hours ata last night. Maybe amazon got the quota already. Few people from america are mad it lasted only few hours, reading from the forums. I think it ended noon time daw. I was lucky to order these and I emailed amazon right away for the price diff from my previous orders. I was lucky they took action right away and they credited me for the price difference.  :)..

Shhh! Circuit City Trading HD DVD Players for Blu-ray

Wed Mar 05, 2008 at 07:30 PM ET

Circuit City is allowing customers to trade in their HD DVD players and apply the original sales price toward the purchase of new Blu-ray players.

As first reported by Gizmodo earlier today (and confirmed at a Washington-area Circuit City this afternoon by High-Def Digest), the unpublicized offer is giving in-the-know customers a second chance at making the jump to high-def.

The offer only applies to players sold in the last 90 days, but that should give those who received HD DVD players for the holidays enough time to trade in their gifts for the winning next generation format. You must return the player in the original box with all of its accessories in order to qualify. Considering the price differences between the two player formats, there will likely be additional costs in making the exchange.

Note that this offer only applies to players and not to HD DVD discs.

good day, people. I just ordered a Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player from Amazon for under 100 bucks w some free hd dvds. So welcome me to the Loser format club, (hell, i dont care, its much cheaper)just wanna get HD on my Panasonic PV70.

My question is, how can we make it play our different region SDs? Is there a code we can get now that they stopped production already so they might not care so much for region coding?

Welcome aboard to HD, yup it will surely look great on your Panasonic PV70. ;)

So far, there is no available code to make it play different region DVD. Guess we are stucked with R1 DVDs. :-\

I was searching the net trying to find a region free hack for my HD-A2 and it seems I found one.
However, it's sound too complicated to do.

here's the link to a thread in avsforumhttp://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=981941

I really pray that there's an easier way to make HD-DVD's region free
