Vic of Sights and Sounds says that hitachi has overstated its contrast ratio and that it doesnt live up to its specs on paper. he says the toshiba 32c3500 is a superior tv. he says you can go to the store and view it side by side if you want. for me i'm looking at the toshiba 32c3500 vs the sony 32v300a, but havent quite made up my mind. Vic says the toshiba is his recommendation, but i have always had sony's and have been very happy with sony. i do have a toshiba 29" crt which i am quite happy with as well so i guess toshiba isnt really an inferior brand. it will come down to viewing the sony vs the toshiba in the store. the good thing about sights and sounds is that their demo units are properly calibrated so you have an accurate comparison.

The contrast ratio of most LCDs for PC on paper spec is just 3000:1 and they already look gorgeous.  Even if that hitachi overstated their contrast ratio by 50%, 5000: 1 isn't bad, is it?  And most if not all consumer LCDs do hype their contrast ratios.

Contrast ratios are a big marketing tool by the manufacturers and one that is not easy for consumers to grasp. Essentially, this is the measurement of the difference in brightness from the darkest to brightest portion on the screen. The problem is that this measurement will vary throughout the screen. This is due to the slight variations in the lighting behind the panel. Manufacturers will use the highest contrast ratio they can find on a screen, so its somewhat deceptive. Basically a higher contrast ratio will mean that the screen will tend to have deeper blacks and brighter whites.

Actually did a side by side comparison between L32S01A, Hitachi 32C3500E and Pana LX77 early March at S & S as I was shopping for a TV. The Hitachi pq was not up to par with the other two. I walked out of the shop with a 32C3500E  ;D.

Toshiba 32C3500E
Hi guys.  Im just new with LCDs.  I recently bought the toshiba at S&S in Shang, almost bought the hitachi at Listening.  Good thing Mr. Vic was at S&S when we came in and demoed the units side by side.

Hope you guys can help, i started watching DVDs with this LCD using a composite cable.  Then i replaced the cables with components.  The pq looked sharper but the colors were off.  The screen looks like there's too much shade of greens. I tried tinkering with the TVs picture settings but it got me a bit frustrated.  I was hoping somebody here has a fixed setting for the tosh which i can try out and normalize the colors to real world hues.

Thanks in advance.

went to S&S a while a go, i brought my PC. We tested the Hitachi L32A01A which is the same with the L32S01A, All i can say is the picture quality is great and the text is clear unlike the Toshiba C3500, which they said to be better than the Hitachi. The Toshiba has distorted text, it unreadable. So, my decision was final, im going with the Hitachi L32S01A which is better and less expensive.

It's the same in my case (@1366x768). Text displayed on my C3500 is crisp and clear.

I don't get why text display should be the deciding factor ???. That is unless you'll be using it primarily as a computer display and not for viewing video.
