Worst PQ in your collection
« on: Mar 24, 2008 at 06:25 PM »
After being impressed several times over with HD movies. The bad PQ DVD's just got worst. Here's the worst PQ in my collection. These are the DVD's I don't mind not viewing anymore.
Let this be our "garbage bin" for bad DVD transfers.

- Event Horizon
- Dragon The Bruce Lee Story
- Mad Max
- Friday the 13th
- Bridge on the River Kwai
- Interview with the Vampire

I hate to put this film here but The Godfather DVD collection is in dire need of an upgrade. It was decent enough before but for todays standards the excessive grain, speck and dirt is sticking out like a sore thumb.  ;)

War of the Worlds (2-disc ed)

To think my copy is R1. I refrained from buying the R3 copy only to discover the PQ of R1 version would be as equally grainy. According to one of the posters here, Spielberg did really want to have his film have that grainy texture to it to create the atmosphere for his film. Now I get it. . .

Local version of "Babel." Blacks were bluish and crushed. Pinagpalit ko.

I bought a copy in HK and pq was 10x better. And by the way, the movie was great!

... The Godfather DVD collection is in dire need of an upgrade. It was decent enough before but for todays standards the excessive grain, speck and dirt is sticking out like a sore thumb.  ;)

The Godfather DVD Trilogy was a bad print on DVD even when this DVD set was first released in 2001.

However, since I've seen the Godfather home videos from VHS to Laserdisc to DVD, I was very impressed with the DVD version because it's the best home video version of the Godfather that I had ever seen.  Still, the DVD picture quality was still bad compared to other titles, even by prevailing standards in 2001.

The reason was because the original negatives were in pretty bad shape.  A photochemical restoration was needed fast, because according to Coppola himself, the negatives were about to dissolve.  Unfortunately, Paramount was not willing to pay for the restoration bill, which would supposedly cost millions of dollars.

The good news is that with Steven Spielberg's intervention, the restoration plans finally pushed through.  Rumor has it that the restoration job has already been completed, so they now have a photochemically restored print fit for preservation.

An April 4, 2008 post on The Digital Bits Rumor Mill says:

We can, in fact, confirm that The Godfather Trilogy has indeed been restored, and that our very own Robert A. Harris was involved in the project - a project backed by director Francis Ford Coppola and even Steven Spielberg no less. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#040408

No official announcement yet from Paramount.

On Home Theater Forum, they're talking about 4k (4096 x 2048 resolution) digital transfers of the trilogy :

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/ht-software-high-definition/269662-godfather-4k.html

If this is true, then the studios are probably predicting that 4k is going to be the next high end home video format.  (See my Red-Ray post: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=70470.msg800025#msg800025 )

Sayang naman yung dobleng gastos.  Actually, if your War of the Worlds is not grainy, then there's something wrong with your copy.

War of the Worlds is not only grainy.  It's also desaturated, close to black-and-white.  I think the camera lenses also used a blue filter.

In the 90's, the marketing line of TV salesmen was that viewing a picture on their TV was like looking through a window.  They obviously know nothing about cinematography.

I just viewed War of the Worlds(2005) last night.

Though it's not as bad as some would have led you to believe.
It is indeed sub-par, I felt like I was viewing the DVD using composite cables  :P

Though it does not share the excess of War of the Worlds,
Minority Report looks quite similar, it even shares the same cinematographer.

No, it does not look bad

I don't know if this is the same with 300 coz this dvd is really grainy.

There was a similar issue with the Saving Private Ryan DVD, remember? Many people, including members of this forum, thought there were digital errors on the PQ.

Of course, film cinematography is something most people -- who expect only one type of film clarity -- may never understand  ;D

As for the 300 DVD, the high contrast and color saturation of the film itself lends to this grain. But only on the DVD format, I heard such issues are not present in the Hi-Def(?) releases.

Even the HD version of 300 is grainy. it's the way director Zack Snyder intended it to look.

As for War of the Worlds, it shares the same director as Saving Private Ryan & Minority Report.
They also share the same cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.

Kaminski's movies are really heavy on the grain

I wouldn't be surprised if some people would cite Schindler's List, Sin City, or even The Good German as having bad PQ because it's in black and white or fullscreen  ;D I actually know a member here who complained about it some years ago...  ;)

I thought that Bad Boys II is considered a new movie, and I was expecting that it would
be one of the movies that would somehow boot a nice picture via the DVD, but I was really disappointed
to see that the video is really grainy, and the color is a bit too sharp...

C Interactive are not that bad, even previous DVD5 discs.

Any title from Paragon is however candidate or should I say 'shoo-in' for worst PQ.

I bought Camp and The Ten Commandments - The Musical both with bad pixelations throughout.

On the contrary, I have to disagree.
I must say that a few of their releases are actually pretty good

The Phantom of the Opera, Unleashed, Rush Hour 3 have decent PQ
