THX Chief Scientist: "It's too late for Blu-Ray"
Posted Mar 25th 2008 4:05PM by Richard Lawler

Quote
With HD DVD in its rearview mirror, it seems the only topic of conversation is whether or not Blu-ray will ever overtake DVD as the dominant media format. Count THX's Chief Scientist Laurie Fincham among the skeptics, he derides it for being "yet another spinning format", which is only holding us back from the glorious future of HD movies stored on flash cards. By his reckoning, when Blu-ray hits the mass market, 128GB cards will have obviated the need for 50GB discs, and provide the convenience of carrying several movies around in your pocket combined with the ease of digital distribution. Check the read link for more tidbits from the interview with Home Cinema Choice Magazine and see how all that sounds to you.

By that time those 128Gb flash drives becomes available, blu-ray disc will cost only $15 or less.  ;D

Again, it's just another technology evolving to more advance or "high-tech" versions of home video.

I think the THX Chief Scientist is

Overestimating:
the potential of high def downloading at the moment
the speed by which makers will be able to develop high capacity flash memory cards

Underestimating:
the time by which "most" countries would be able to build suitable infrastructure for country-wide ultra high speed internet
the cost of high capacity flash memory cards when they finally become available
the peripheral devices required for transfering and archiving downloaded high def files
the PQ and AQ quality demand of consumers
the common people's preference for simple things in life such as inserting an optical disk to watch a movie

THX, a Lucasfilm subsidiary, said on Friday that its chief scientist never said that the future of Blu-ray disc format in the movie industry was doomed. Instead, THX fully supports the Sony- and Philips- developed format, though, there are other possibilities to distribute movies.

There's a big difference between the opinion of a scientist and the opinion of the marketing department.  :D  Sony was probably pissed and called THX to give them a piece of Sony's mind.  Now, THX is on damage control mode.  ;)

oo nga, technocrats usually don't think about the repercussion of what they are about to say. kaya usually yung mga taga p.r. at marketing ang damage control agents for these scientist. hehehe, can't live with them, can't live without them rin.  :o

Scientists are too busy seeing future technology instead of what people want and how business work.

It is true that storage media are becoming cheaper and cheaper... It's just how the industry  "accepts" or "rejects" these ideas...

Memory cards have come a long way in a very short span of time, but remember that optical discs are still the best way of storing data/movies/music for long periods of time.

A new way of storing memory cards will have to be invented such as "anti magnetic" or "anti static" containers or even "anti-shock" systems...  if you drop a memory card or put it near a magnet, there's a big chance of spoiling its contents when compared to optical discs - right?

I think the advent of memory cards for movies will be feasible about 5 years down the road (guesstimate of course).

think of USB drives that you can drop or even soak in water... it will still work. USB drives are becoming cheaper and cheaper nowadays. also... no moving parts (unlike a disk spinning in the drive). this should be a better format for everybody... but its still cheaper to produce a disk right now. also...magnets dont affect solid state flash devices :)

if we actually had video on demand in hd here... i would definitely lessen my disk purchases. hell...even SD video on demand would actually do it for me. lol.
