empire's 50 greatest tv shows of all time
« on: Mar 29, 2008 at 02:26 PM »
check out the results of empireonline's recently concluded poll on the bestest tv shows of all time.  i got no beef with the show sitting at the top spot but gnash my teeth and bawl at the moon as to why the #9 show only made it to, well, #9!

here's the link;

What?! No Twilight Zone?!

Agree on The X-Files, should've put it on number 6 or 7 at least.

Hey, where's the juicy '80's soaps like DALLAS, KNOTS LANDING & FALCON CREST? How about campy shows like CHARLIE'S ANGELS? And what about M*A*S*H? Where's the b*tchy MELROSE PLACE in the '90's? ;D Having empire listed this poll, it's no wonder british T.V. shows made it quite in the list.

Speaking of Brit TV, it's also a bummer they didn't include The Prisoner or The Avengers (the one with Emma Peel, I would say) on the list.

a reason is probably the bulk of the voters  who voted are not aware of the older tv shows because they were not around yet during those shows' heyday.  case in point, the dr who series listed is the more recent incarnation.

Surprised to see Buffy at #2. Makes me wanna buy the complete series boxset  ::)

No That '70s Show?

Yeah, and considering they made it until a disppointing Season 8. I'm glad Veronica Mars is recognized though, as well as Firefly... such great but cancelled series  :-[

Speaking of great but cancelled, My So Called Life should be up there, too, considering the others they listed.

And I much prefer Voyager (which didn't even make the list) over Deep Space Nine, though I may be in the minority there.

That makes 2 of us. I'm not a big Star Trek fan but I like Voyager more than any of the Star Trek series on TV. Well, except probably for the original. My fave sci-fi set in space TV series though is Andromeda. I guess, I have to watch the Firefly series sometime soon.

V is quite a show as well during the '80's.

Voyager is terrible because it totally abandoned the two hostile crews lost in space to become TNG lite. DS9 on the other hand, had multi-episode arcs dealing with real-world issues.

I think the reason more pinoys like Voyager is because it was shown everyday on Hallmark.

The Office at 23?  Monty Python at 39? and Family Guy at 12?  Right.

As for The X-Files, just a heads-up, Jose Chung's From Outer Space airs on AXNBeyond (Sky Ch.35) at 6am 12pm and 11pm on April 4.

Agree with wedge - - The Prisoner and the Emma Peel Avengers should be there. I'd put the latter a bit above X Files (a show I'm quite fond of) since it was its forebear. Those episodes were wild. Parang Grant Morrisson ang nagsulat!

The Wire is hands down and inarguably the best TV show, American or Brit or Pinoy, of the last ten years - - -with Deadwood a close second, West Wing third. But I can live with Simpsons at Number One and most of the rest of the Top 10 except maybe Seinfeld should be there instead of the uber-feh Friends. And maybe 6 Feet Under and Twin Peaks should be higher, too . . . I dunno . . . and Scrubs . . .and The Shield . . . . Oh well, it's a poll . . . that's how these things hang . . .no accounting for whatever . . .

No Twilight Zone is criminal but what can you do? Kids these days, no sense of history.  . . which might explain why there's no Muppet Show or the Adam West Batman . . .  ;D but no 70s Show either  . . tsk tsk tsk . . .or the great but cancelled Northern Exposure  . . . and yet  Prison Break and Sex and the City and  Alias (JJ Abram's waterloo, IMO) and Heroes (although going from an OK show to the worst show on TV in the space of a season is some kind of achievement, must admit) make it. ::)

Oh well, at least Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Amazing Race  and Survivor didn't make the cut.

Well, not strictly set in space but my fave would be Stargate SG-1. And yes, Firefly is worth your time.

Not sure what you're referring to when you say "it totally abandoned the two hostile crews". Personally I liked it for the characters, the fact that they're alone, traveling home with no help from the Federation, and for the time travel stories.

If DS9 was shown everyday and I caught more of it, maybe I would have liked it, too. But the 3 or 4 episodes I saw didn't appeal to me.

And even if Voyager was shown everyday, it still has to be a good show for people to like it.

Track down a copy of Life On Mars. You guys won't regret it. While you're at it, start watching its spin off too, Ashes to Ashes. And yes, they're both named after classic Bowie songs.
