It matters only in relation to your player, i.e. if it is selective in playing regions, or what is called region-locked.  Apart from distinct packaging and some features present in one region DVD and not in another.

For me, it really doesn't matter anymore, for as long as the picture quality and the sound quality
is the same, I did raise the question before about the quality of both Regions, and according to them both came from the same mastercopy, making the quality the same.

if it comes from warner and to some extent fox, it doesnt really matter since most releases mirror the r1 counterpart.  BUT, movies by dimension, miramax are an altogether different matter.  in my case, packaging is important as much as the content and quality.

Agreed. Warner releases here pretty much look like the same in R1 in terms of packaging and features.

Agree. As in my case, I have a universal player so it doesn't matter which region DVD I buy :)

Before yes, I started collecting with all R1's, even R2 and R4's, but lately with the cheap prices of R3's...it doesn't matter anymore.  ;D

For me...I prefer R1, most especially for the titles that are not availbale in R3. But if the titles are available in R3, that's fine, as long as it has good PQ and SQ. ;)

i would love to have r1's for my collection but it cost more. so okay na rin ang r3 since they currently come really cheap but the down side is some of it are disappointing from dvd content to packaging. choose those that has the imported stickers on it, personally i think it has better PQ and SQ.

i also agree that warner releases are good quality dvds specially for its price. pag warner walang duda and second thoughts on its quality pipili ka nalang ng titles na gusto mo.

I totally agree with sir av.I don't really mind kung ano region kasi region-free din player ko basta. First choice ko is R3 mas madali bilhin mas mura pa! Those DVD's that are hard to find here sa Pinas, no choice but to buy it elsewhere. R1 packaging is still better than R3 that is why I think collectors prefer to buy them.

When I first started collecting DVD's, R1 palagi ang gusto ko.
But I realized if I continue buying R1 DVD's it will cost more money and I will be getting the DVD later pa.
So I decided to go R3, packaging lang naman ang difference eh.

I buy R3 Warner, Fox, Paramount, Disney, Columbia
Dimension and Miramax I buy R1

also titles not available here such as Flash Gordon  :D

It only matters to me on a technical standpoint:

Audio track (e.g., Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition R3, DTS same as R1. Jaws: 30th Anniversary Edition R1, DTS -- R3 doesn't have DTS track.)

PQ/SQ/format (e.g., The Last Emperor Criterion Collection [R1] 2:1 vs. The Last Emperor [R3 Hong Kong release] 1.33:1)

and

Special features/packaging (e.g., The Poseidon Adventure [1972] 2-Disc R1 is exactly the same with the R3 version. The difference is, R1 has Lobby Cards included.)

I'm not much of a special features person, only when the movie is really interesting on many technical aspects (as with the LOTR Extended Edition trilogy) that I dive into what the director and crew have to say. Else, it kills the magic for me. Many R3 Warner releases are no-brainers since they more or less contain the exact PQ/SQ and Special Features as their R1 counterparts -- with a few exceptions.

Batman Begins R3 doesn't have the MTV Movie Awards spoof feature. Not really a big deal, in my opinion. Also, I heard that Blade Runner: the Final Cut R3 doesn't have the preview trailers of other warner releases that the R1 has. I'll have to check my two copies later to confirm (I bought the R3 because I just couldn't wait for my R1 5-disc Ultimate Edition gift set to arrive and I really wanted to see Sir Ridley Scott's changes already!). Other than minor commercial changes, both releases of Blade Runner have exactly the same special features and PQ/SQ, to my knowledge.

Since a lot of R3's are of good quality naman, that's the bulk of the movies I get. Yun lang  :D

Dimension and Miramax I buy R1

Guys, I used to agree with that assessment, until THIS MONTH. The Viva release of Miramax's Gone Baby Gone is a widescreen, full-featured DVD-9 that has the same features as the R1. It's a Disney master (priced at Viva's Disney prices). So R3 may be something to consider for future Miramax releases.

For me, I now only buy R1s/R2s that are not released on R3, or are released locally with poor picture quality. Poor quality releases are those by:

1. Paragon Home Video

2. Solar Entertainment

3. Viva (except Fox/Disney/and now Miramax titles)

4. C-Interactive (case-to-case basis - try searching through threads here at PinoyDVD first to check if the C-Interactive release is good or bad before buying it)

The Poseidon Adventure [1972] 2-Disc R1 is exactly the same with the R3 version. The difference is, R1 has Lobby Cards included.

You were able to find this here, or is that an R3 from another Southeast Asian country? I've been looking for this title in Philippine stores for years, and have never seen it - I've only seen the "Poseidon" remake, the Hallmark mini-series, and "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure." I'd really like to buy one if you can remember where you saw it. Thanks -

Dude, go to Singapore ;D  I was at HMV at Citylink and literally spent half an hour debating if the Lobby cards were worth it. I don't think the R3 was released here, ever, because I kept searching for it, too. And the R3 cost about half as much as the R1, hence, the amount of time going around the store thinking about which to get.

As I recall, The R3 is in a blue colored packaging while the R1 is in gold/yellow. The packaging of the R3 is great, almost the same as the R1, if I recall correctly. Not cheap-looking.

doesn't matter to me.. i guess it depends on your player and how picky you are.
if it's available here and its a good release that's fine.. but if im obssessively craving for the extra-special DVD feature or packaging, and cant get it on local stores, i buy online. :D

Parang mas maganda yung R1 compared to R3. Kasi yung ibang distributors pangit ang pagkaka-copy nila.
Then you see the R1 version you'll see all the bells and whistle (commentaries, deleted scenes etc).
Sa R3 it's just the movie, subtitles and scene selection (pero hindi naman lahat). Kaya siguro they can sell it for a cheap price din.

although there are prime grade r3s already, would have to say r1 hands down in general. Explains why r1 titles have a higher selling and acquisition price vs their r3 counterparts. ;D

I have a region-free/multi-region player so player isn't an issue. Deciding on whether to get Region 1 or Region 3 is to me a matter of which one's a better edition. As much as possible, Region 3 because it's cheaper but if the Region 1 edition really is better (more features, etc.), I'll go with Region 1.

Since I have a multi-region player, it doesn't matter whether the dvd is R1, R2 etc...
I usually go for dvds other than R3s for those titles that are not available here, or if the packaging and/or features of the R1/R2 dvd is/are better  ;)
