Samsung reclaims throne in latest LCD market share report



Welp, that didn't take long. Just months after Sony found itself surprisingly atop the North American LCD sales rankings, Samsung has vaulted back to the pole position while watching Sony slip to second. Granted, the top three suppliers -- Samsung, Sony and Vizio (in that order) -- were all separated by just three-tenths of a percentage point, with each firm's market share checking in at 12.8%, 12.7% and 12.5%, respectively. Below the trio, we find Sharp, LG and everyone else gasping for air. It was also noted that Vizio recognized the strongest year-over-year growth of any top five flat-panel brand, and interestingly enough, Sony managed to maintain its leadership position in the LCD category of 40-inches and up for the tenth straight quarter. Matsus**ta stumbles, LG becomes top plasma supplier once again




Believe it or not, it was around this day two full years ago that LG managed to climb atop Matsus**ta, Hitachi and the rest of the gang to claim the label of top plasma maker in the world. Shortly thereafter, Matsus**ta roared to number one and has remained there ever since -- until now. The aforesaid firm slipped from #1 to #3 in Q1 2008, as LG's share surged 34.8-percent on 97-percent year-over-year growth. Samsung SDI took advantage of Matsus**ta's folly and claimed the silver for the first time, while Hitachi, Pioneer and Orion closed out the bottom in that order. We've got a good feeling about PDP this year, but we aren't about to call it a comeback.

Samsung shows off ultra definition LCD TV
Extra pixels, extra inches and double refresh rate for new prototype

Last week it was Blue Phase televisions Samsung sent to shock us via the Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition in LA; this week it’s ultra-high definition and lots more.

The SID show, which started on Sunday, is currently home to Samsung’s 82-inch UD (ultra definition) LCD TV. A mighty pixel count of 3,840 x 2,160 explains the name, by the way.

On top of that, the screen refreshes at 120Hz for added clarity and reduced blurring and extra RGB LED backlights have been built in to raise the colour saturation into the stratosphere.

Virtually there?

Company exec Sang Soo Kim is clearly pleased with his new toy, saying: “This 82-inch LCD is large enough to cover all viewing angles with ultra-definition resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate that will allow viewers to watch motion pictures as if they are really in them. It is the optimal display for future TVs.”

Similar UD technology also appears in a multi-touch electronic whiteboard replacement of the same size, although this runs at the standard 60 frames per second refresh rate.

Next on the list for the show is a 2.3-inch e-paper screen that uses carbon nanotubes to facilitate greater flexibility, although details on that are still under wraps for now.

Finally, some good news on the price front – Samsung’s latest 40-inch LCD HD TV has been built with fewer driver circuits than usual (two compared with nine normally), which will slash the sale price when it’s ready for the shops next year.

In the plasma arena, however, the margin is much wider: Panasonic took top spot once again with 33 per cent market share, followed by LG with 19 per cent (down 38 per cent from the previous quarter), and Samsung at 18.4 per cent. Despite LG having lost market share in plasma compared quarter-to-quarter (Q/Q), the company showed the strongest year-over-year (Y/Y) growth of any plasma brand. Vizio was fourth with 9.8 per cent, and Hitachi fifth with 6.8 per cent.

Panasonic regains the throne again.

Pinaka maganda talaga pioneer sir, but the good news is pioneer and panasonic has merge. So their technology will be on both units. This is the new NEO PDP.
