My PV80 impressions...

Final words:

I've not spent enough time with the PV80 to give out a solid conclusion, but from where I stand, and from how it performed thus far, I could honestly say - YES! The PV80 rocks harder and I do look forward to the next level of plasma experience with a PY800 or 850 this coming season. But if ever that does not materialize,I won't really be disappointed. This unit is already a winner and a definite long term keeper! (T.V shopping ends here, for now)

Thanks to Vic of SIGHTS AND SOUNDS for another stellar delivery and product assistance.

*Units used as basis for comparison

Samsung A550 "FULL HD TV"
Samsung R8 "Considered as one of the best LCD's to come out of the year 2007"
Panasonic LX80 "Considered by many around here as the definitive LCD"
Panasonic PV8 "The bang for the buck plasma"
Toshiba CV500 "The solid middle ground performer"

Very nice review that needs to be read for Panasonic plasma shoppers.

Thanks for buying TV from us.

Coming soon...watch out for another review after TV is calibrated by Spyder colorimeter.

Im just lucky jeff did not have any PV8 2 -3  weeks ago .. :)
just lucky enough to get a good offer .. nei a great offer, that i could not refuse .. ^_^
now a proud owner of PV80 ..
swivel base (no use for me, sanay nga ako ng wallmounted eh)
sd card (yah maybe, but i do have an htpc)
additional hdmi port (hmm pwede, but i dont have a use for it right now)
piano finish (yun pogi! sarap i-display sa bisita)
additional contrast ratio !!! yes, worth every penny !! (my friend told me that in his preference its better than my cousins kuro, but i disagreed cause of the price of the kuro, it should be better .. hehehe)

additional contrast its worth every penny talaga! ;)
lalo na panasonic phil warranty pa unit mo not grey, unlike what others are selling...hehehe :D
2 years panel warranty makes a big difference too! Alam ni Mr.B&W yan. :D

So the additional contrast explains the over-all advantage of the PV80 from the PV8 in terms of pq.

UPDATE OF MY IMPRESSIONS:

Compared the PV80 and the Samsung A550 again in terms of pq and this is what I've gathered thus far:

-The reds of the A550 are kinda pale, while the reds of the PV80 are really red.
-The A550 has a brighter green over the PV80 but they are displayed in an odd manner, the greens of Samsung are like tainted with gamma rays...it's too bright ;)
- On the intro of the PS3 game "Soul Calibur 4", there is a slight stutter with Sammy, and this is something I did not see with the PV80.
- On an Xbox360, Sammy compares on a toe to toe with the PV80 in terms of over-all pq, it seems that Samsung is a very good display for the 360! Then I learned that Microsoft uses Samsung monitors to showcase the Xbox in Japan, must be some sort of internal arrangement, I'm guessing here but it seems Samsung units are primed for Microsoft's console.

Just honest observations that may differ from ones opinion :)

Compared PV80 and PV8 again for pq:

- On the DVD "Return of the Jedi" set at 1080i connected via HDMI 1.3a, the chapter where luke fights off vader, the pv8 was a bit dark but still very good. However, with the PV80 the backgrounds are better defined without compromising plasma black levels.

Give me more time to fiddle with this unit and will compare it directly with the LX80 :)

SO FAR VS THE A550 and the PV8 it's still ROCKING HARDER!!!

To pinoyDVD members,

In view of the numerous daily inquiries of electronic products from us, it has become difficult for me to attend all the work by myself.

With this regard, I am delegating part of my job to my staff username Reply_SnS to help me post product reviews and advises, and send out prices to you on my behalf.

Oo naman boss, really worth it despite certain plasma limitations.

JUST TO CONTINUE MY OBSERVATIONS

Problems with grainy Blu-Rays? if you're using a PS3 as a player set your RGB to limited. It really does do a lot of noise cleaning. Anyway did this with the other units and again the PV80 came out to be the "cleanest".

PV80 = Still rocking harder!

That's why I upgraded mine from PV8 to PV80, because of the itch for a better contrast ratio :) not to mention the classy piano finish, extra HDMI port and the SD card reader.. ;D...thanks to Sir Vic of SnS for letting me upgrade and giving a good deal and the free wall mount :-X

I notice its difference right away with the PV8 when set to ECO mode which activates the CATS(Contrast Automatic Tracking System) most specially when I turn the ambient lights out. I noticed that the blacks are deeper on this mode as compared with the PV8. Just my observation

Hey guys, care to share your calibrated settings for your PV80 plasma?  I own 50PV80 and bought it uncalibrated since I'm based in the province.  Thanks!

that maybe the reason why eco mode (on night time viewing) is good enough for me ..  :D

I think calibration works wonder...at least according to the articles I read in the net.  Thanks bro! :)

Share ko lang guys, I tried watching my tv with all my lights on and the picture quality remains satisfactory.  Panasonic has improved their PV80 panels such that you can watch it in bright settings.  Ayos!

I've been giving too much praise for the PV80, allow me to say what I don't like about it. The PIANO finish, for me the the PV8 looks better, it's just that I don't like shiny T.V's. Too bad most flat panels are already following this trend.

In terms of looks the PV8 and the LE8, betters the PV80 and the LX80 ;)

Medyo off topic ng konti, in terms of specs as per product literature how does the PV80 compare to:

I only use eco when playing the wii, i noticed it has deeper blacks than standard, dynamic on the other hand is like putting too much power on a small robot so no dynamic love for the wii, only for dvd's and blu ray viewing

42PV80 on Eco mode and CATS on, the contrast varies from night time viewing (lights out) and day time viewing. The image tends to become sharper and brighter during daytime viewing compared to night time viewing.

Meron ba pang HDTV na dehins auto tracking ang contrast?

Have you guys noticed na mukhang mas sensitive ang auto-tracking when gaming?  (I'm using Xbox360)

My Xbox360 is a launch unit bought Dec 2005.  3-years old na sya in about 5 weeks.  Buhay na buhay pa rin connected 24/7 via D terminal.  Didnt I mention to you the problem with Phil power lines?  That could be one of the reasons.  Anyway, I notice that the screen dims (switches to low energy mode) after some minutes of gaming - maybe some kind of screen protection or eye protection during gaming.   Sabagay I like eco mode especially when using the HDTV as PC monitor.
