Adela’ is Cinemalaya opening film July 11

By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:13:00 06/16/2008

Adolfo Alix Jr.’s “Adela” will open this year’s Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.

The news was confirmed on Saturday by Nestor Jardin, president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), and Laurice Guillen, Cinemalaya competition director.

“Adela” topbills veteran actress Anita Linda as a woman who celebrates her birthday alone, after her children fail to visit her.

Gala night for the first cut of “Adela” is July 11 at the CCP Main Theater, according to Robbie Tan, chair of the production and monitoring committee.

“We are glad that the opening film is directed by a Cinemalaya baby,” Tan said.

Alix made his feature-film debut with “Donsol,” an entry in the second Cinemalaya in 2006. Last year, he directed another Cinemalaya entry, “Kadin.”

“Adela” is produced by Bicycle Pictures and co-stars Perla Bautista, Ricky Davao, Iza Calzado, Joem Bascon, Jason Abalos and German Moreno.

Noel Ferrer, executive producer, told Inquirer Entertainment that Bicycle Pictures has invited Anita’s past co-stars and directors to grace the gala night, along with the cast of “Adela.”

Among them are Sharon Cuneta (“Caregiver”); Judy Ann Santos, Rhian Ramos and Jolina Magdangal (“Ouija”); Jaclyn Jose (“Takaw Tukso”); Phillip Salvador and Amy Austria (“Jaguar”); Caridad Sanchez (“Botelya”); and Vilma Santos (“Sister Stella L.”).

Also invited are Anita Linda’s past directors, among them Eddie Romero (“Buhay Alamang”), Mario O’Hara (“Babae sa Bubungang Lata”), Joel Lamangan (“Aicrape Imasu”), Chito Roño (“Itanong Mo sa Buwan”), Maryo J. de los Reyes (“Sa Paraiso ni Efren”), Jeffrey Jeturian (“Houseboy” episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya”) and Elwood Perez (“Masarap, Masakit ang Umibig”).

The gala screening is meant as an industry-wide tribute to the actress whose career spans seven decades, Ferrer explained.

“The last time she played the lead was in the 1970s (in Lino Brocka’s “Tatlo, Dalawa, Isa”),” Ferrer noted. “She has ably supported other stars; it’s high time she was given not only a meaty part, but a tribute from her peers.”

Shocked

Anita Linda told the Inquirer: “At first, I was shocked when Adolfo offered ‘Adela’ to me. I asked him: Why are you hiring me? Your movie may not make money [at the box office].”

She added: “Until now I’m wondering what I did to deserve this honor (the tribute). But I’m happy and excited to see all my friends and colleagues at the CCP.”

Also in the works is a retrospective of her classics, including Gerry de Leon’s landmark 1951 film “Sisa,” in UP Diliman.

(During the run of Cinemalaya from July 11 to 20, a retrospective of the films of actor-director Manuel Conde is scheduled.)

“Adela” has received invitations from A-list film festivals in Europe and North America.

Manuel Conde's long lost film GENGHIS KHAN which I believe was the first Filipino film screened at Venice Film Festival will be included on the retrospective of Manuel Conde.

 Cinemalaya 2008 screens 10 films, July 11-20

From July 11-20, the public will be able to see 10 full-length entries and 10 short films that will compete in the fourth edition of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. This year's edition has the theme Anong Kwento Mo?, which conveys the message that Filipinos everywhere have interesting stories to tell, especially Filipino independent filmmakers.

Mainstream stars such as Mylene Dizon, Eugene Domingo, Tessie Tomas, TJ Trinidad, Ryan Eigenmann, Baron Geisler, Coco Martin, Ces Quesada, and Meryll Soriano take part in the full-length films of Cinemalaya 2008.

Organizers earlier announced that two of the ten chosen finalists would not be taking part in Cinemalaya 2008. Emman dela Cruz's entry titled 1434456 is about a Punjabi widower named Ranjeet Singh, also fondly called Jimmy Paybsiks. The lead character, who lives in contemporary Manila, reflects the struggles of a migrant sector in the country-our Indian neighbors.

Antiparang Basag, supposed to be directed by Edith Asuncion, backed out due to the lack of a counterpart-financing scheme. This entry narrates how a woman helped four octogenarians fulfill their simple wishes in life.

In replacement of 1434456, Emilio "Jay" Abello was able to enter the Cinemalaya competition with his entry Namets (which is the Ilonggo word for yummy). This romantic comedy is a colorful rollicking celebration of food as well as love.

Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil filled the final slot with her film titled Boses, shot in San Antonio, Zambales. A wounded violinist (played by Coke Bolipata) meets a child prodigy and helps him recover.

The other Cinemalaya entries for this year include 100 by Chris Martinez, Baby Angelo by Joel Ruiz and Abi Aquino, Brutus by Tara Illenberger, Concerto by Paul Morales, Huling Pasada by Paul Sta. Ana, Jay by Francis Pasion, My Fake American Accent by Onnah Valera and Ned Trespeces, and Ranchero by Michael Cardoz.

Synopses of full-length Cinemalaya entries:

100

According to filmmaker Chris Martinez, his official entry to Cinemalaya is a "celebration of the senses and what life has to offer." His goal was to do a film about death in a young fresh way. By doing so he believes he celebrates life. 100 chronicles the last three months of a cancer-stricken woman (played by Mylene Dizon) who has a list of things to do before she dies. Her list of tasks, mostly dealing with closure and practical matters, covers the worldly and spiritual worlds as people close to her share her last days. The film examines the betrayal of the body, celebrates the senses and contemplates the end of life and how to live it. A light-hearted, briskly paced, youthful take on a classic subject, 100 stars today's most exciting performers such as Mylene Dizon, Eugene Domingo, Tessie Tomas, TJ Trinidad, Ryan Eigenmann, Simon Ibarra, and others. Under the creative supervision of Marlon Rivera, 100 is written and directed by Chris Martinez.

Baby Angelo

TV actress Ces Quesada gives the performance of her life in Baby Angelo. Her expressively sad eyes are able to convey emotions without the need for dialogue. When an aborted baby is found in the dumpster of a small apartment complex, the lives of its tenants are turned upside down, and they are forced to confront the ghosts of their own past. Though it is the investigation of this sad event that moves the film Baby Angelo forward, the story is really about the people that inhabit this story. Their lives are linked by a common emptiness, lost opportunities; lives cut abruptly by circumstance. And when a tragedy hangs over them, they are forced to examine their own lives, a series of inconsequential miseries that add up to absolutely nothing at all.

Boses

Award-winning director Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil describes her work as a musical journey. In this movie, a wounded violinist meets a child prodigy and helps him recover. Boses is the story of a musician who gains back his humanity by giving violin lessons to a child of the slums, who in turn, is able to get back his voice from a muted, abused and desensitized existence. This is a story of a wonderful friendship founded on the sublime beauty of music between a violin teacher and his student, a mute seven-year old abused child in a shelter. Ariel (played by Coke Bolipata) discovers the immense talent of Onyok hiding behind a veil of silence and pain caused by an unhappy and cruel father. In the developing relationship of teacher and student, both characters reveal more of themselves that otherwise may have remained unspoken. They discover each other's strengths and failures by way of expressing it through the violin.

Brutus

Regarding her film, director Tara Illenberger says, "Gusto naming ipakita ang ganda ng Pilipinas, specifically Mindoro. We also want to show the need to preserve the forests."

Two Mangyan kids are hired by illegal loggers to smuggle wood from the mountains of Mindoro. Hiding the logs beneath a bamboo raft, the kids embark on a dangerous journey through whitewater and harsh terrain, risking life and limb to deliver the goods to the lowlands. They discover a world completely different from their own-run by the greed of men, a world governed by ideologies that bring about the armed conflict that plagues the Mindoro highlands, the home of their own people. She adds, "Apart from the serious subject it's also a coming of age film for the two kids. I'm also proud of the performances of Ronnie Lazaro and Yul Servo."

Concerto

Theater director Paul Morales takes on the digital medium with Concerto. He pointed out, "This is a deeply personal story about my family and how we survived during the second World War. It shows the importance of music and was able to transcend borders."

Concerto is about a special piano concert is held in the forest outside Davao City during World War II. A displaced Filipino family, lead by former Military Commander Ricardo and his wife Julia, become acquainted with a group of Japanese officers. Their son Joselito, a Japanese speaker, becomes the conduit with the neighboring Japanese. Their daughters Niña, an aspiring concert pianist and the musically gifted Maria, who is able to play by ear, are alternately repulsed and intrigued by the officers.

Family values are questioned as the family treads the thin line between enmity and friendship with the occupying Japanese. Based on true stories from the director's own family history, Concerto celebrates a family whose reverence for life, expressed through their love of music and friendship, can survive even war, and shows how beauty and compassion does grow in even the harshest of conditions. Five actors from Japan were cast as officers. Direk Paul says, "I'm blessed with a talented cast that include Jay Aquitania, Meryll Soriano, Shamaine Buencamino, and Nonoy Froilan."

Huling Pasada

The title, according to director Paul Sta. Ana, refers to the taxi driver's shift and to a writer's most previous work. The story follows the creative process of Ruby, a prolific writer, abandoned wife and protective mother. She writes about Mario, a taxi driver who becomes a father figure to a street child in the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. As Ruby tries to resolve Mario and child's story, she seeks refuge in her own creative output: the line between reality and fiction is blurred, and her character's past is entangled with her own inevitable future. Two Ateneans share the directing duties for Huling Pasada: Paul Sta. Ana and Alvin Yapan.

Jay

Young director Francis Pasion summarizes his film as follows: "Baron Geisler's role as a gay TV producer personifies my commentary on Philippine media." Jay is the name of two protagonists in the film. Jay Santiago is a gay TV producer documenting the family of a gay hate crime victim who happens to be his namesake, Jay Mercado. In the process of producing for his TV program, Jay Santiago intrudes into the private grief of the other Jay's family and he is drawn to the secret life and love of his subject. Direk Francis issues a warning for his film, "Do not believe everything you see as truth." Aside from Baron, this film also stars Coco Martin as Edward.

My Fake American Accent

Writer-director of this Cinemalaya entry Onnah Valera said, "I wanted to capture ang buhay na walang tulugan."

Set in one of the high rises of the Makati, My Fake American Accent is a look into the lives of call center personnel. It's a slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of several Technical Support call center agents in the span of six months. They handle calls and provide inbound tech support for the American customers of an Internet company in the United States. Speaking with a fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived, caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center industry.

Namets (Yummy)

Director Jay Abello describes his film Namets as a romantic comedy. He proudly proclaims, "It is the no angst film in Cinemalaya." He praises the acting skill of lead actress Angel Jacob who picked up the Ilonggo dialect in two months. Abello is ecstatic that they shot the dialogue almost entirely in Illonggo. Renowned director Peque Gallaga was also cast as a mafia boss. Namets (Yummy) follows the ongoing flirtation between Manuel and Lourdes, two native of the Negros province whose lives revolve around food. Along the way, we are treated to the full panorama of Ilonggo cuisine and the idiosyncrasies of appreciating it. Namets is a colorful rollicking celebration of food as well as love. Jay Abello explains, "If you notice, the love of food is very much part of our culture, not just in Negros but as Filipinos in general."

Ranchero

The unpredictability of life in jail is the subject of Ranchero. Director Michael Cardoz likes characters who aren't what they seem. "Merong kontrabida na nagiging bida."

Ranchero unfolds in a small provincial jail in Rizal. It's about Ricardo whose last day in jail is today. He and his close friend Miyong work in the jail's kitchen. The two spent the whole morning talking about Ricardo's plans when he gets out of jail. After lunch, one of the kitchen knives went missing and this was brought to the attention of jail officials. Not only will this event affect food preparation in the jail's kitchen but also the lives of both of them.

2008 Cinemalaya opens July 11

By Nestor Torre
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:36:00 06/23/2008

MANILA, Philippines—Hopes are high that the 2008 Cinemalaya film festival and competition will match the bracingly elevated standards set by the indie showcase’s first three editions.

From July 11 to 20 at the CCP, film buffs will be viewing 10 films competing in the festival’s full-length category, which were culled from a total of 194 storylines submitted to the competition.

In addition, 10 short films will be on view — plus a new competition of films for children, a laudable initiative supported by the National Council for Children’s Television.

There will also be a tribute to Manuel Conde, with six movies comprising his retrospective: “Genghis Khan,” “Ibong Adarna,” “Verganza,” “Señorito,” “Cruz na Kawayan,” and “El Robo.” Too bad, the last time we viewed the last surviving snippet of “Juan Tamad Goes to Congress,” it was only 10 minutes long.

All the more reason, then, to cheer Cinemalaya’s focus on Conde, and Nic Tiongson’s new book, “The Cinema of Manuel Conde,” which will be launched on July 10 in time for the festival.

But for many film buffs, Cinemalaya’s focal point is still its full-length category, with 10 new features up for viewing. With the festival opening on July 11, it isn’t too early to size up the official entries, depending on your preferences:

• “100” by Chris Martinez is about a terminally ill woman’s list of things to do before she dies. With Mylene Dizon, Eugene Domingo, Tessie Tomas, TJ Trinidad, etc.

• “Baby Angelo” by Joel Ruiz and Abi Aquino shows what happens when an aborted baby is found near a small apartment complex. The lives of some tenants are turned upside down as they are forced to confront the ghosts of the past. With Jojit Lorenzo, Katherine Luna, Ces Quesada, etc.

• “Boses” by Ellen Ongkeko Marfil is about the friendship that develops between a violin teacher and his student, a mute, abused boy. They discover each other’s strengths and weaknesses by expressing them through violin. With Coke Bolipata, Ricky Davao, Meryll Soriano, Cherry Pie Picache, etc.

• “Brutus” by Tara Illenberger focuses on two Mangyan kids who are hired by illegal loggers to smuggle logs from the mountains of Mindoro. They discover a world of greed and ideological conflict that plagues the home of their people.

• “Concerto” by Paul Morales is about a piano concert held toward the end of World War II in a forest outside Davao City. Values are questioned as a family treads the thin line between enmity and friendship with the occupying Japanese troops. With Jay Aquitania, Meryll Soriano, Shamaine Buencamino, Nonoy Froilan, Elijah Castillo, etc.

• “Huling Pasada” by Paul Sta. Ana and Alvin Yapan effects an instructive confluence of paths between a writer and a taxi driver who becomes a street child’s father figure. With Agot Isidro and Neil Ryan Sese.

• “Jay” by Francis Xavier Pasion is about two protagonists with the same name — a gay TV producer who documents the case of a gay hate crime victim, also named Jay. Eventually, the producer is drawn to the secret life and love of his subject. With Baron Geisler and Coco Martin.

• “My Fake American Accent” by Onnah Valera and Ned Trespeces. A workplace comedy that follows the lives of call center agents for six months.

• “Namets” by Jay Abello follows the ongoing flirtation between Manuel and Lourdes, whose lives revolve around food.

• “Ranchero” by Michael Christian Cardoz unfolds in a small provincial jail, where Ricardo is about to be released. But a knife is reported missing, and the story takes some unexpected turns. With Gary Lim, Jess Evardone, Daniel Magisa, etc.

MY FAKE AMERICAN ACCENT by Onnah Valera and Ned Trespeces is a
slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of technical
support call center agents in the span of six months. Speaking with a
fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble
comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived,
caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center
industry.

NAMETS by Emilio "Jay" Abello is a colorful celebration of food as
well as love, and the love of food above all, which is central to
being Negrosanon and being Filipino. It follows the flirtation between
Jacko and Cassie, two Negrenses who grew up in Bacolod, and whose
lives revolve around food. The film will be shot on location in Negros
Occidental and will be primarily in Hiligaynon, the language spoken in
that region.

RANCHERO by Michael Christian Cardoz is the story of convicts who
serve a special role inside the jail - they prepare the meals
everyday. But in a jail where some inmates see no reason to continue
living, what is the role of food? Is the food's role to extend life or
to prolong the pain of those who don't want to live?

No reviews yet for any Cinemalaya film? I'm based too far from the CCP, so I'm waiting for the UP Cine Adarna showings.

BTW, on a personal note, my brother is one of the editors & producers of Huling Pasada.

Cream of the crop for this year's Cinemalaya 2008:

Best Picture- JAY
Best Director- Chris Martinez for 100
Best Jury Prize- BRUTUS
Best Screenplay- 100
Best Actress- Myleen Dizon for 100
Best Actor- Baron Geisler for JAY
Best Supporting Actress- Eugene Domingo for 100
Best Supporting Actor- Yul Servo for BRUTUS
Best Short Film- ANDONG

Sidebar....the most mind-boggling for this year's fest....no single award for CONCERTO?! My friends were raving on this film saying its more beautiful than ORO PLATA MATA and could stand along with TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS!

Even Mother Lily was sighted among the audience raving on the film.

'Jay,' Andong' Cinemalaya winners

By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:59:00 07/20/2008

MANILA, Philippines--An evening of pleasant surprises was how Tess Rances, Cinemalaya coordinator, described the awards show of the 4th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Sunday.

Rances said the board of jurors had a difficult time picking this year's winners.

"The five-man jury took almost five hours to deliberate," she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The jury, headed by French critic Max Tessier, included foreign film fest programmers Kim Ji-Seok of Pusan and Ansgar Vogt of Berlin. There were two Filipinos on the panel: Inquirer arts editor, Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino and University of Santo Tomas (UST) professor Lito Zulueta and actor Cesar Montano.

The panel judged both the Full-Length Feature and Short Film categories.

Francis Xavier Pasion's "Jay" won Best Full-Length Feature Film; Milo Tolentino's "Andong" won Best Short.

"Jay" was cited for its "sheer originality and energetic storytelling;" and "Andong" for its "devoted and humorous look at a boy's obsessions."

Chris Martinez won Best Director (Full-Length) for "100."

Tara Illenberger's "Brutus" won Jury Prize for Full-Length; Anna G. Bigornia's "My Pet" Special Jury Prize for Short and Sheron R. Dayoc's "Angan-Angan" won Special Jury Citation.

Mark V. Reyes won Best Director (Short) for "God Only Knows."

Baron Geisler, who portrayed a gay TV producer in "Jay," won Best Actor; while Mylene Dizon, who played a cancer patient in "100," won Best Actress.

This year, organizers added two more performance awards: Best Supporting Actor and Actress.

Yul Servo of "Brutus" won Best Supporting Actor, while Eugene Domingo of "100" won Best Supporting Actress.

The audience Choice award was won by Chris Martinez for "100" (Full-Length) and by Mark V. Reyes for "God Only Knows" (Short).

;D Agree with Keating..Concerto is one hell of a lovely movie. We chose to watch this over 100 this Saturday. It's really hard to find an indie film that's a period piece with good soundtrack. I believe this film touched the hearts of many than 100 or Jay.

Now I really have to catch Concerto at UP. Watched Boses instead of it. Big regret . . .well, not so big, really. Turning out to be quite the underdog, though, Concerto. And I heard the cinematography was superlative, too. (Will go see Jay and 100, too, as I missed those, too.)

Cinemalaya has made stupid decisions in the past (Pepot Artista over Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros and Big Time, Tribu over Endo), but of course, we aren't really privy to the politics and other motivations the jury members have in deciding who wins. If it were me, I'd give Ranchero the best pic prize (just because it's the only film that didn't aspire to be liked), Jay the jury prize, Francis Pasion for Best director, Chris Martinez for Best Screenplay. I haven't seen Concerto or Boses, or Baby Angelo, or My Fake American Accent though.

;D Agree with Keating..Concerto is one hell of a lovely movie. We chose to watch this over 100 this Saturday. It's really hard to find an indie film that's a period piece with good soundtrack. I believe this film touched the hearts of many than 100 or Jay.

I missed this one, blitz.

It will definitely on top of my lists when Cinemalaya goes to U.P. along with JAY & 100.

If it were me, I'd give Ranchero the best pic prize (just because it's the only film that didn't aspire to be liked)

Come on..You can't be serious really hehehehe...Nice seeing you again Francis...passing the Bar must have made you hate food LOL!!!

Qoheleth thanks for posting the sked! CONCERTO, JAY & 100 are conflict again on my sked.

What film did you watch at the CCP? I was at the gala of NAMETS & HUBAD.

Last year the food was overflowing at the lobby of Main Theatre after the awards night, this year only the participants competing for the fest and the officials at the CCP were allowed.

No problem. What do you think about Khavn's Ultimo? Is it better than Squatterpunk?

***Back to the topic, ticket price to the Cinemalaya 2008 screenings is PHP 70.
