sad to say, itong dalawa 'yung kulelat sa mga palabas.  same fate as katas ng saudi last year. saka r-13 din kasi 'yung one night only so expected na 'yung small crowd.

       Alrighty.

Maybe it was because it was the best of the worst. It looked like the only too which attempted to go for some artistic aspirations. I saw the trailer for Baler and from that trailer alone you knew Viva as a major studio influenced the filming of the movie. Actually pati yung trailer mukhang hindi din pinalampas. Wasn't Baler supposed to be a joint production venture between Unitel and Viva?

The 2nd and 3rd Best Picture trophies are stupid. But then again so was Bayani Fernando's speech at the Cinemanila opening when he said (and this is almost verbatim) "Hindi naman parang Cinemanila ang MMFF, hindi ho namin habol  ang art, pera lang."

At any rate, good for Mark and  I might try to catch Baler out of having liked his last two films - - -La Visa Loca specially.(He should make more comedies)

But I really do want to watch Ang Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat. Seriously. Its trailer and that GMA/Barack commercial are the two funniest things on free TV these days.

Already seen ISKUL BUKOL: 20 YEARS AFTER. It's a hit-and-miss effort. Vic reverts back to his previous adventure/fantasy films feel of the said movie. The comedy picks up in the middle and then falters at the end. Still, it's fun to watch seeing the triumvirate together again in the big screen. The Makati Scandal scene is hilarious! ;D There goes my P150 bucks.

Meron pa din X, during those times when they chose HIMALA as Best Pic over a bunch of other entries.

Buti na lang hindi nag Best Pic yung TANGING INA or else......wala na tlga pag-asa, basket case na. As Behn Cervantes would say.......peste bal;D

I just hope BALER & DAYO would get more chances now at the box-office. Balita ko tailender daw.

Hi Dodo,

Dayo is good. Baler is a waste of time. Shake Rattle and Roll X is a drag, except that Tuviera's Nieves had some moments. Heard good stuff about Magkaibigan and One Night Only, but that's merely hearsay.

Haven't seen DAYO, bro. Normally I always catch the ones that are weak at the box-office. I'm already tired of the SRR franchise. The trailer of TANGING INA parang buong pelikula na yung pinakita.

Might see also Joey Reyes' MAGKAIBIGAN and of course, BALER.

It's unfortunate that the reputedly good films "Dayo" and "One Night Only" aren't shown in many cinemas. In Makati, only one cinema is screening
"Dayo" while none for "One Night Only". Puro "Iskul Bukol" at "Ang Tanging Ina". No wonder they're the ones that make all the money.

;D Saw Baler after Christmas..Oggs was right, waste of time and my hard earned P170. Trying hard artsy-fartsy. Those playing half-breed Spaniards' acting and dialogue were absolutely horrible. And since it was the only drama sort of entry, Anne Curtis' victory was a no brainer tho IMHO did you call that fine acting? An absolute fluke for a bad actress (actress is not even a term for her) that she is.

And continuity was bad. When Jericho was found dead in the corner by Anne, his hands were tied out front. Flashback: Jericho was executed with his hands tied at the back.

Haaay....I really miss the MIFF featuring virtual slugfest between Nora and Vilma films.

MMFF draws raves, rants

By Rito Asilo

Are the movies of the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival really better than the previous years’? With all eight entries earning the coveted A and B grades, the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) would have you think so. More interestingly, with “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” and “Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After” winning as Second and Third Best Pictures, respectively, you’d think that local comedy and horror-fantasy flicks have indeed come of age.

Not necessarily.

By wanting to “encourage” producers to make more movies by giving tax-based incentives even to poorly-made films, aren’t we sending the wrong signal to impressionable viewers that an inferior movie is actually a great one? You can’t educate moviegoers by equating noble intention or commercial viability with quality—they sometimes go together, but they’re far from being synonymous.

True, film appreciation can be subjective—but, adding politics and a “compromised” standard to the contentious mix only exacerbates the problem. If the current trend continues, it’s only right for viewers to insist that the monopoly of MMFF movies during the Christmas season should come to an end, because patronage shouldn’t operate on blind faith—it has to be deserved.

Strong points

That said, here are our other observations: Among “Baler’s” strong points are its leads’ fine performances and above-par production values. But, it is hobbled by continuity gaffes (the puppy that never grows old, etc.) and an episodic sensibility.

Parodies, farces and allegories can be used to reflect the socio-political realities of our time, but “Tanging Ina’s” Ina Montecillo (AiAi delas Alas) rising to the Philippine presidency and “Iskul Bukol’s” archaeologist protagonist, Victorio Ungasis (Vic Sotto), finding Rajah Humabon and Lapulapu’s magical artifacts while Cambodian and Japanese thugs chase him are just too much of a stretch.

Delas Alas proves that her comic team-up with Eugene Domingo is hard to beat—they make some jokes work even when they’re not all that funny. It’s also great to see Vic Sotto reunite with his brother, Tito, Joey de Leon and Mely Tagasa, but their movie wasted its chance to revisit the well-loved TV sitcom by using it as an excuse to cook up an illogical adventure saga.

Jose Javier Reyes’ “Magkaibigan” is technically polished and well-acted (particularly Christopher de Leon), but it lacks the expansive breadth of a big-screen offering—it feels more like a Hallmark TV movie.

In “Dayo,” the use of Filipino folklore’s mythical creatures—like the tikbalang, kapre, manananggal, etc.—boosts the animated feature’s familiar story, but halfway through its running time, the exposition loses its momentum.

Joel Lamangan’s “Desperadas 2” is just vacuous drivel. It has the most attractive cast, but it also possesses the silliest premise this side of celluloid camp, and is weakened further by over-the-top, hit-everywhere performances, most notably by Marian Rivera.

Winning portrayal

Ironically, it’s also the feisty Marian who turns in the most winning portrayal in “Shake, Rattle and Roll 10.” In the rollicking “Nieves,” directed by Michael Tuviera, Rivera plays an engkanto nemesis a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In fact, the the production can stand without the anthology’s first two episodes (Tuviera’s “Emergency,” Topel Lee’s trite but serviceable “Class Picture”).

Also worth a peek is Joey Reyes’ light and breezy “One Night Only,” with fine performances from its cast—most notably Alessandra de Rossi, Paolo Contis and Joross Gamboa. To have all those zany couples gather in one motel is highly unlikely, but Reyes cleverly strings their stories together with kitschy wit and catchy energy.

Flashback

Looking back, the Metro Manila Film Festival has become a fierce battleground for the industry’s hottest stars. In the ’70s and ’80s, touted as golden eras for local cinema, the late Fernando Poe Jr., Ramon Revilla Sr., Lito Lapid, Christopher de Leon, Phillip Salvador, the late Charito Solis and Dindo Fernando, Lolita Rodriguez, Lorna Tolentino, and Dolphy were just some of those who lent their stellar presence in the fray.

But unquestionably, all eyes were focused then on Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos, undisputed movie queens in the history of Philippine movies. The public always looked forward to their “showdown” every time they had respective entries in the annual filmfest. One could feel the intensity of their rivalry in the vocal calisthenics of their fans. Their greatest accomplishment was being able to mix commercial success with artistic merit.

Not only did their films raked in money but have won for them acting accolades.

For the record, Nora has accumulated more Best Actress trophies than Vilma in the yearly MMFF. She has won in Atsay (1978), a significant year because only one acting award was given that time, the Best Performer, regardless if you were lead or support. She has beaten Vilma who was nominated for Rubia Servios. That started her string of wins: Ina Ka ng Anak Mo (1979), Himala (1982), Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina (1990), Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita M. (1991), and Muling Umawit ang Puso (1995).

As for Vilma, she has scored wins in Burlesk Queen (1977), Karma (1981), Imortal (1989), and Mano Po III: My Love (2004).

Obviously, the MMFF has played a great role in their steady development as great actresses and box-office fixtures, something you can’t say about the present crop of stars.

Atsay and Rubia Servios

 Source: The Urian Anthology 1970-1979
Review: Atsay and Rubia Servios

Isagani Cruz, TV Times, 1979

Atsay and Rubia Servios

Undoubtedly, the two best entries in the 1978 Metro Manila Film Festival are "Atsay" and "Rubia Servios."

"Atsay" is remarkable in several ways. It has a strong social message, aimed at primarily those who forget that maids are also human beings. In the character of Mrs. Anton (Angie Ferro), screenwriter Edgar M. Reyes is able to embody the thousand faults which middle-class housewives are heir to.

"Atsay" can also pride itself on being truly Filipino. Its mood is set by its Pilipino credits (in sharp contrast to the English credits of the other entries). The film deliberately exploits local color, dwelling not only on rural but also on picturesque urban scenes. The story, needless to say, can happen only in the Philippines, where domestics and beerhouses are national institutions.

But the most striking thing about "Atsay" is its cinematography (Romeo Vitug). The slow dissolves, the multiple exposures (such as the brilliant train sequence), the surprising angles, the flawless composition---these border on genius. The cinematography is so extraordinary, in fact, that it covers a multitude of sins.

The most grievious sin of all is the ending. In the end, Nelia (Nora Aunor), after having been humiliated, beaten, raped, dehumanized by the vultures of the city, decides to stay in the city anyway in the hope that an impoverished construction worker (Ronald Corveau) will make her live happily ever after. Such an ending, while assuring the viewer that human nature is not totally evil, is unmotivated and, in fact, goes against the very theme of the story.

For "Atsay" is the story of how the city dehumanizes, of how human beings become swine (this pointis made through blatant symbolism in a shot of Nelia inside a cage-like jeep), of how Manila is a prison (note Vitug's several shots of cage-like structures). "Atsay" is a story of hoe individuals are no match against the cruelty of the city. The construction worker, for example, becomes the victim of a construction accident. A young pretty virgin from the province is raped while she's drugged. A kind-hearted old man is shot down while protesting against exploitation.

The ending of "Atsay" contradicts the film's affirmations. It would have been much more in keeping with the theme (not to mention the current concerns of the national human settlements program), if Nelia were shown rejecting the city and, in hope, returning to her province for a new life.

"Rubia Servios," on the other hand, does not dilute the message. Willy (Phillip Salvador), the son of a powerful and wealthy figure, is portrayed as totally evil, devoid of any redeeming quality. To screenwriter Mario O'Hara and director Lino Brocka, the province is the same as the city. Rubia Servios (Vilma Santos) is raped both in the city and in the country. Rubia kills Willy in the country. Violence unites all places. It is the "unity" of conception, scripting, design, and direction, in fact, that "Rubia Servios" is superior to "Atsay." Lino Brocka does not waste shots in is attempt to create a Filipino classical tragedy. He subordinates everything to the building up of one emotion in the viewer, that of hatred of Willy. So despicable does Willy become at the end that, when he is murdered by Rubia, no viewer can say that Rubia is at fault. And yet, morally speaking, no one is allowed to take the law into his own hands. The law, in fact, put Willy in prison for the first rape. There is no reason to think that the law will not put Willy to death for the second rape. By conditioning the reader to condone Rubia's revenge, Brocka succeeds in questioning one of our deeply-rooted moral beliefs.

The unity that characterizes "Rubia Servios" contrasts sharply with the tendency of Eddie Garcia in "Atsay" to exploit Vitug's versatility even at the expense of tightness. There are shots in "Atsay," for example, which could easily be cut without hurting the film's integrity. Even the train sequence, one of the best sequences in "Atsay," is far too long.

"Rubia Servios" is Lino Brocka's film; "Atsay" is Romeo Vitug's. Nora does an excellent acting job; but so does Vilma Santos, and "Rubia" is a much more demanding and difficult role. Edgardo M.. Reyes is an established literary figure, but Mario O'Hara is much better screenwriter. Overall, "Atsay" may be much more impressive than "Rubia Servios." In terms of challenging our moral and legal convictions, however, "Rubia Servios" is much more significant.

Finally got to see both Dayo and One Night Only.

First let me say that the ticket price for all MMFF movies this year is outrageous! The movies are even more expensive than the blockbuster Hollywood films. I watched both "Dayo" and "One Night Only" at SM-MOA for Php 180 each! The consolation was, they were both good films.

"Dayo" while still not at par with foreign animated movies, should still be celebrated nonetheless, as it marks a significant step towards the promotion of homegrown animation. It's also nice to see a Filipino movie minus the cheap, keyboard synthesizer soundtrack. However, I did find the blatant product placements as a big turnoff. Never have I seen product endorsements so in-your-face as I have in this movie. They were really, really distracting.

I haven't seen  Iskul Bukol, Ang Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat and Desperadas 2, but based on other people's reactions on those two movies and from what I experienced with "One Night Only", it seems "One Night Only" is THE comedy movie to see in the MMFF. It's a "convergence" story, for lack of a better term, like Crash or Babel or Burn After Reading where the characters are connected to each other. Each character's situation may be absurd, but they're easy to forgive, because the movie was just downright funny. The technical aspects of the film were also good. Nice camerawork (didn't mind the shaky cam in some scenes), great editing and good soundtrack (again, no cheap keyboard synths here). Though not for the entire family (with content too mature for young children), this is a Pinoy movie that us grownups can laugh out loud to.

Good thing it was worth your time and money allanmandy. Will just have to see the remaining MMFF movies once it is released on videos. Although the price I spent in Robinson MetroEast was P30 bucks shorter, I still felt robbed on the money spent watching a single MMFF film. The last entry I saw on the big screen was DEKADA '70!

You haven't seen Sharon's NANG INIWAN MO AKO. The opening sequence was too much!
